For tooling patterns that will be reused, tap offs are an invaluable tool. This practice allows you to transfer your pattern efficiently and accurately every time. It is also a great way to achieve a one time mirrored image. For example, matching a left and right leg panel or yolk on a pair of chaps. In this video I cover how to build a tap off and how to use it.

Which would be better for making a tap off: straight or pointed swivel knife blade?

What swivel knife and size do you use? It looks like a great size and it cuts great.

It’s a matter of matching the pattern up as you move to the next section.

Joe Meling, I have another idea which might work. How about using a sheet of plastic, drawing a pattern on it. Then get some 15lb-20lb fishing line, and superglue the line onto your pencil marks? That would create a similar version of the old Tandy craftaids. They have some pretty amazing glues these days.

And also doesn’t that tap when you pill it off the back mess the leather up by making some of the back lift up

It can a little if it’s a flanky piece but I line most all of my projects so it’s not a problem. If you’re not using a liner you can Skive off any of the fuzzies.
