Thank You for showing the “how to build” video for a Casting Rig. I’m going to try surf fishing for the first time ever this summer and I’m trying to figure out a good beginner rig (rod & reel) and the basic items I’ll want to have with me on the shore to be prepared for almost anything. I’ll check out some of your other videos but if you have a checklist of items you usually take surf fishing - that would be awesome. Great video !

Brigand Outdoors What kind of cable do you use that connects to the hook at the bite portion of the rig?

Clinton Stanley I believe on the rig you see there, it is 180lb coated cable that I bought on amazon. The key is to figure out what strength you want, and whether you want it coated. Then the most important part is to check the diameter and match it with the appropriate sized crimps.

right on, great tutorial, reminds me of some of the european surf rigs, and catfish rigs, just as a heavy duty version. Always tight lines! If I may, just a few cents regarding reels, as it came up in the comments: The Daiwa BG 8000 has a smooth drag, and runs very smooth, but it is a little less than 33 Ibs of max drag, advantage, however for an 8000 sized reel, it holds about 500 metres of 100 Ibs braid and can be a good medium-heavy setup for casting with a proper rod reaching fairly good distances. So it actually, to me at least, also depends on the combination of rod action, drag, line capacity and experience. I found some of the European catfish rods (esp those for long range fishing) good surf rods for beach-based casting shark fishing. The Spinfisher 10500 is, of course, rock solid, bullet-proof, as are some of the bigger Finnors. All Best, bros, from Germany.

What pound cable are you using. I make what I call a combo leader for pier/surf fishing for shark and big bull reds. I am using 2ft of 275lb 49 strand ss black vinyl coated cable with 3ft of 250lb mono leader. Hook im using is a mustad demon perfect wide cap 11/0. Swivels is Rosco 4/0 350lbs. Whats your thoughts

Everything looks great EXCEPT you didn’t mention anything about how the main line would be connected to the shock leader ( 100 pounds mono )? And if we use FG knot, is the tagging going to damage the rod guides?! Please help giving your experience in this. Appreciate it

Couple different schools of thought and options for this. 1. (Typical set up) Use shock leader w/ FG or Albright knot. For lighter lines my preference is the Albright, simply because its easier to tie. Heavier lines FG makes a little more sense. In either case I have never had guide damage, although the sound on the cast makes you think there would be. 2. No shock leader (braid to bite leader via swivel). If you aren’t slinging heavy baits and are on sandy bottom, this is perfectly fine. Buuuuut be sure to check for guide wraps before casting. 3. Shock leader w/hollow core splice. This option is really the ideal, but takes the most effort to prep. There is no knot on a splice so you get the best cast. I wrap my splice junctions with some light braid and usually add a dab of super glue for extra security.

I didn’t use a shock leader in a spinning combo and after fighting a 200lb ray for 2hrs, I got broken off due to the sand rubbing against the 80lb braid

Nice work. You're casting a knot with 100lb mono to braid uni through guides? I am assuming you are talking about a a surf spinning set up, not for surf casting reels. That's a heavy duty set up. I run a 400lb bite leader to a 50lb shock leader to 20lb mono main line and I catch pretty solid sharks with no issue. I am using Daiwa BG30's casting reels to cast with.

Andrew Barrie thanks for the feed back. So my connection knot from main line to shock leader is a Bimini twist to Albright, and for shock leader to the rig is a uni knot.

Great vid, do you clip sinker straight onto clip or run a bit of line? Also what length does the swivel clip have to run up and down line?(does it slide freely the whole tailwhip section) Thx mate

Yep, clipped straight to the spider weight. The weight slide runs the whole length of tail whip on my rigs, but they can add a stop if you want.

Opinion on running straight cable to swivel which connects to main line? Since it should be much more bullet than mono? ( For casting and for droning) 2nd, some swear by snelling circles since applying pressure in a snelled circle it forces the hook to curl in and results in a better "hookup rate" by enhancing the function of it. But as displayed in your video and many other youtubers crimping(Flemish eye or standard loop), the circle dangles with free range of motion which is the opposite of a snell. Have you tried both methods and noticed a difference between styles? If not , have you had any issues(function wise resulting in less hookup rate) with circles by ringing up the way you do with AD WAS wire or (in my case) cable crimped with Flemish eye or standard loop and crimp. Love the content and will value your opinion as well as experience with regards to above stated question. Regards Ruan

Ruan thanks for the questions brotha. My apologies for getting back to you so late. To your first question, I know many anglers that fish straight cable and swear by it. In my opinion I think it is unnecessary and here is why. The cable portion of the leader is strictly for bite protection. So even on a 10 plus shark that happens to gut hook himself (vary rare) you are looking at needing no more than 3 feet of cable. The heavy mono portion is meant to protect against body rub (shark skin is very coarse) and tail whip. The reason why most people combine the two is you get the same protection as straight cable, it weighs less, and will be less prone to kinking. Cable doesn't kink as often as wire but when it does you would have to replace the whole rig. In the case of the one I showed you, you would have to replace the bottom 2-3 feet if it kinked. Although the weight reduction doesn't seem very important, the heaviest rods available are rated to 16 ounces. 6 of those are use for the spider weight (typically), so the less cable you use the bigger that bait you can toss. I agree to your point about snelling circles, but for big game where cable or heavy mono is required snelling isn't possible with the diameters being used. At least I haven't been successful at it. I haven't been able to test one vs the other unfortunately, but I will say I haven't had issues with the free floating circle. I think this due to having the proper amount of drag set. As long as the line doesn't go slack my hook up rate has been good. Another thing that helps is keeping your hooks sharp. I generally take about 5 mins with a file before I deploy a rig to sharpen up the hook. Hope this helps man, feel free to hit me up anytime with any questions. -Tom

Hey Mark, we have found 80-100lb to be pretty ideal. In general we usually tie on at least 2 rod lengths of shock leader. The other nice thing about using a shock leader, is if you hook into something longer than your rig, the shock leader can serve as tail whip protection as well.

What will be the proper weight sinker? For the line any differences I’m planing on using 250lb mono line but can’t find any info on proper sinker weight.

Depends on a few factors, I'll start by saying my go-to weight is a 6oz gemini spider weight with break away legs. Here are some things to think about. 1. Most importantly - what is the current like in your area? If it is calm, 4-6oz is probably good. If there is a heavy current and/or a lot of floating vegetation you will need to go heavier. 2. Are you casting or dropping (via a kayak or something)? I have found the 4oz weight casts the best with my shark size rigs. 6oz are also pretty castable. Gets worse the higher you go. If you are dropping from a kayak, then you can go heavier. Just keep in mind you have to reel that weight in at some point. 3. What is the size and shape of you bait? If you have a palm sized chunk and calm water - then your 4-6oz weights will work. If you have a dinner plate sized stingray and a heavy current then a 12-16oz weight dropped from a kayak is the right call. To summarize: fast current, big bait, and dropping - go heavy. calm current, small bait, and casting - 4-6oz is what i would recommend. Hope this helps

What is a good castable shark rod from 80-130. I can't find any with a decent handle. They all are short and are made to be on a boat and drop the line. I need something castable...please help

Hey Jack, you won't find a casting rod in the 80-130lb range. Casting rods/Surf Rods are measured by lure weight most of the time. The most stout surf rod you will see is 8-20 ounces. Ugly Stick has a 15 footer, but pretty noodly. My recommendation would be a St. Croix - Mojo, Penn Carnage 2, or Tica Dolphin. If you have more money to spend hit up Pete Barret at Barrett rods for a custom job.

I prefer bare cable. Due to the sharks shred the coating off after one 6ft plus hook up and its hanging shredded which cause snags.

Yeah this topic has been hotly debated. And I agree that what you are saying can happen, it just doesn't happen that often for me. I like the coating for a couple reasons, it protects the cable from the salt water. The crimping sleeves bite into it and not the wire. And finally it masks some of the electromagnetic signal from the metal that sharks are sensitive too.

For casting rigs I usually go with 130-150lb coated cable, not wire. You can find it on amazon, doesn't have to be fishing specific. The crimps are based on the diameter of the cable you buy.

So the go to reel right now for shark fishing is the Penn Spinfisher V 10500. You really won't hear a difference of opinion on that in the shark fishing community. However, if you have some extra money to spend the Penn Slammer 3 10500 is the same size reel with 60lbs of drag.

The daiwa is a good reel but, the biggest difference is the Penn has more drag (40lb vs 33lb) and more line capacity.

How does a 100lb knot go getting through the eyetip on the cast

On spinning rods, especially with big aluminum guides its no problem. However, newer rods use more and smaller ceramic guides sometimes. Could be an issue, but I haven't had a problem with it yet. I have been known to fish straight braid from time to time, but Salt Strong did a great video on braid vs mono abrasion and put me solidly in the mono camp. So I usually always run it, despite the knot. The other thing you might consider, which actually works really well. Is either run hollow core and splice your mono inside the braid, or invest in a bobbin and learn the PR knot and use a little super glue for added security. Both of those methods eliminate the knot problem.

What lb test is your main line

My default main line is 80lb braid, for dedicated shark rigs I got up to 100-130lb. What you choose really depends on how far your baits drops need to be, and what the ocean bottom is in your area. Couple things to think about. Rocky bottom - need more abrasion resistance = high pound line. Sandy bottom is the opposite. Far drops - need more capacity, need to minimize line weight. Target species - black tips you can go low, hammers you need to go high. In my area - I have flat sandy bottom and I am generally targeting smaller fish and shark species. So 80lb braid is plenty for me.

Know this is old vid. But I'm starting to notice that in the US you guys do not snell at all. We snell and our hookup rates are huge. We make that entire trace without any of those crimps and if done correctly are as strong if not stronger than US crimped ver. And we do get and land some pretty impressive sharks here. Not shooting your style down at all. It obviously works for you. Perhaps I need to make an RSA ver KZbin vid one then perhaps you guys can see how we do it. Yeah the problem is that when the rig is over 6 foot it becomes hard to cast, especially if you are wading out into the surf.

I personally gravitate towards 12-13 footers because they handle heavy 1-2lb bait/weights a little bit better (at least in my experience). But I feel like this is more of a preference issue that would change between fisherman. Yeah I use completely different rigs (similar design just longer and heavier components) for my big reels and kayaked baits. I have a separate video on that as well. New Florida regulations were passed for shore based shark fishing. New rules and restrictions put in place without any proof or facts that connect fishing to unprovoked shark attacks on people. A group of people got this done just by complaining to politicians.

And it was done without data, studies or facts that support their claims. Actually, the studies done suggest there is no correlation between fishing and unprovoked bites. We all know when the mullet are migrating the blacktips, spinners etc are so numerous that it's just NOT best time to swim. That time is a month away, can't wait!
