I'm tired of waiting for the new 2021 iMacs with Apple Silicon processors, so I decided that I'd take matters into my own hands and make my very own Apple Silicon iMac powered by the M1 chip. And this is a real iMac, not just a monitor! It's... the iMac mini! In this video I’ll show you how to build a DIY iMac with Apple Silicon at home! It’s super cheap and easy!

@user-le8ul4nr5t 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm observing and what I saw is him buying a new mac and frankensteining it into his old one. In case you haven't noticed, apple does everything they can to prevent you from changing anything about their machines (except for the new mac pro, that one was a legitimately well thought machine with good upgradability). SSD's are tied to the board, sometimes even soldered, ram is soldered too, sometimes the CPU is too and the GPU almost always is soldered too. No PCI-e to be seen on most machines and good luck getting extra disk space or USB ports. Also, I'm a linux user, so blocking it with the T2 chip really doesn't go well with me. The M1 chips just makes every single one of these worse.

I used a 2012 imac as a display for a long time using a controller board. You can pretty easily solder the power button connections from the original imac to the pcb with the buttons on it. That way you can turn it on using the original button and not have to worry about those controls hanging out of the ram slot at the bottom like I originally had it.

Just drill a big hole in the iMac housing and connect multiport dongle cables (run through the hole) to each of the USB-C ports on the MacMini and one will have lots of ports. Can even get dongles with SD Card Slot. Problem solved. Or maybe the other end of the dongle cable could be mounted in the existing port holes on the iMac housing (might need special cables, but shouldn't be a problem for Luke).
@risley.ogembo

great idea!! consider that: cut a hole in the side of the iMac right in the disc slot and put the board of the mac mini in a way that you have the plastic part with the ports and power button facing the side and fitting the hole. re-glue the standoff in a place that helps you screw the board in the place you need to.

Look at Mac Repairman's G5 conversion video for pointers. If you 3D print a bracket that holds USB ports and an Ethernet port, you could reuse the existing I/O board holes to connect external devices and you can make a board so the power switch on the iMac can be used to power the M1 Mac Mini so you don't need to take the screen apart. A 3D printed power adapter would enable the power connector to fit snugly in the case and prevent creepy crawlies from entering the case. If you can get the camera working, it would be a fully functional iMac.

The ports and power button issues are relatively easy to resolve. Same for the mounting of the Mac Mini inside the iMac chassis with a little effort and tools. This feels kind of half-baked when it really didn't have to be, but it's still nice to see and full of useful information for those interested in and willing to put in a little extra work to build some "Classic" M1 iMacs. It's an especially great way to repurpose dead iMacs, such as the one in this video, and I happen to have one sitting on a shelf in my closet as well, so I think I'm going to give it a shot once I get an M1 Mac Mini.

You could run a Thunderbolt 3 extension from within and then buy one of those m1 docks which sits under the stand, nice and clean. as for air flow you can get creative and find some thin plastic sheets to redirect to the vent holes. But its still not there yet as there is no internal audio as the speakers have been removed unless you put them back with an amp :)

I love the idea of this! My question is, could you run a TB4 cable out of the back and into a TB Dock? That should suffice, shouldn't it?

I mean, yes that’s totally fine. The only problem remaining is being able to power it on. And I imagine it should be technically be possible to solder the original power button to the circuitry in the mac mini. But don’t quote me about this.
@Darkshadowguy
@Darkshadowguy 3 жыл бұрын
@@sashapaleologue1234 should be easy to do imo. Should just be removing the power button, resoldering longer cables from the board to the button, then fixing some small 3D printed mount to the inside so the button can be pushed from the outside. Hell you could probably wire it to the iMac power button as it’s just a button that sends a “power” signal to the device afaik

In one of my PC's, the hard drive (no, not an SSD, an actual hard drive, the ones that break if they vibrate too much) is "held in place" by nothing but the sata power and data cables. I have no idea how it's still working.

How does that display adapter handle colour accuracy and colour spaces? I mean, does it use the display like for like or does it have drawbacks in terms of what I've mentioned? I am genuinely curious as I'd like a colour accurate secondary display for my M1 MacBook Pro and a 27" dead iMac might just be a really good option.

For ports, extension cables cost little even for thunderbolts and you can glue them on position to reuse the ports on iMac body. And for power bottom, try to install some remote smart motor things.

Hi Luke, great work here! I now kind of regret to have upgraded my 10 year old iMac to (almost) the max last year (i9 and 1TB SSD). Do you think it would be possible to add ports by using simple extension cables with some kind of fixture plate where the original ports sat? Do you think the original iMac power button can be connected or is the one on the mac mini soldered on? Last thing: It would be great to use the excess power of the mac mini to power the screen ...

I had thought that the M1-MacMini was ripe for deconstructing into rack-mountable server. Get a bunch of macminis and put them in one rack. Your project definitely validates that thought. Nicely done.

When you said you didn’t have the skills to make a custom enclosure or modify the iMac case, I wasn’t going to argue. But having seen the stripped case, I’m going to argue. Gluing some Lego bricks to the shell would provide a solid base to anchor the Mini logic board anywhere you wanted it. Redirecting the Power button to the iMac Power button would be the first hack, and a man who rebuilt 7 of 10 MacBooks saved from a trashcan can do that. Strip the ports off the old logic board. Literally SAW the old logic board apart with a Dremel abrasive wheel. Cut any redundant circuit traces. Get cables, chop off one end and solder to the sockets. Site the sockets where the case ports were, attach cables and epoxy them down. Plug the cables into the Mini board. Now, even if the ports aren’t identical, you should be able to fake it Press Power button, the Mini board turns on.

Your experiment could have led to a far better M1 iMac than actually appeared. I hope you will revisit it with some help. It would not be too difficult to re-purpose port holes in the back and maybe add a C auxiliary upon which to suspend one of those inexpensive Mac Mini docks allowing multi-monitor use. Audio would not be on the side like on the new iMac and there would be SD and the old optical drive could take a blu-ray. Finally, by having thin wires from wifi and bluetooth chips you would overcome the persistent drop-out problems still spoiling the Mini in 2022. Keep up your superb channel. It is honest and well articulated without the silly SFX which wreck others.
