The M1 Mac mini launched to warm reception as the previously compromise-ridden form factor found a home with the more efficient Apple Silicon chip; however, it quickly became apparent that the Mac mini was a lot bigger than it really needed to be. We’ve been working for the last six months to change that, and it’s finally done. Mac nano? Mac mini mini? Tiny Mac? Call it whatever you want, but it’s awesome.

That would be great, but I guess Apple wouldn't like to have customers who might like stick their Mac minis on the back of a random Screen - cause that might happen as soon as the Mac mini gets smaller. In fact, they still want to sell their iMacs as an unintrusive hardware. With the current size of the Mac mini, you still want to place it beside the screen.

No, your wrong. This is nothing that Apple should have released, smaller isn't always better. Does nobody remember that the Mac Mini used to have a power brick? That power brick sucked, it was as big as the Mac Mini and you always had to find a way to mount the brick next to it. Till one day Steve Jobs announced the Mac Mini 2010 chassis that we still use today, he touted the removal of the power brick, now an all-in-one Mac Mini.

@@carbongrip2108 - have you heard about the somewhat recent development of GaN power bricks? Look at how tiny the 35W Anker Nano 2 is. With Apple being way more advanced in dense packaging that could be reduced even further. Power supplies don't have to be large at all anymore.

I think everyone should have a PC tower (if that’s what they’re still called) and an Apple Lap top. If they can afford it. That magsafe cable is intended for laptops for a reason. It falls off far more easier than the round one the iMac uses and if you accidentally knock it off when the mac mini is running... Well, you can imagine the results.

I came to make a similar comment. Without an internal battery, MagSafe is a bad idea. May look cool, but unless this is far from a desk, there is a good chance it will get bumped and disconnected on a fairly regular basis.

I came up with a no-glue trick for the gnurled inserts: print them with holes large enough to fit the inserts into, then after the wash and dry, but before the cure, put screws in the inserts to prevent any getting in there, brush a little resin on the sides and put a tiny amount in the hole (q-tips work best for this, I find), then press them in and cure them in place. Oh, and if you have a handy blank board to make sure they stay straight, just use extensions to lift it up away from the resin, while still keeping them in their proper holes. Edit: I personally have an Elegoo Mars 2 Pro, so I came up with this for my Arduino and raspberry pi housing projects, but I think it's reasonable to expect it to behave the same in this case. Just a bigger print area, after all. Edit 2: Make sure to keep a tissue handy for any extra that squeezes out when you press the inserts in, unless you don't care about a permanent "wet" looking bump where it cures.

Great build! A Mac mini of this size would be so similar to those little Intel NUC PC's you see in offices. You could literally stick it to the back of your monitor and have the cleanest setup.

@@adredy the lattice parameter of silicon is about 0,5 nm so it's not *impossible* just really hard since there's not that many atoms at that scale to make a transistor. So 1nm, I guess possible, but hard AF.

@@romano5785 you can do basically everything with the air m1, including playing games with dolphin (native) btw. I own a 7nm ryzen machine, and this thing trades blows with the 5nm m1, not in intensive tasks ofc like AAA gaming, but gets the job done.

What are you talking about? The first gens of the intel iMac, Mac Mini, MacBook Pro and Mac Pro (replacement for the Power Mac) were all based on their PowerPC designs. The only one that wasn't was the MacBook which replaced the iBook.

To me that shows they ARE capable of doing it (shrinking things while gaining functions, not losing, mostly, exception being the 1st gen one since it WAS a Mac with a single core CPU) and ok with it on SOME product lines, just... Not the PC ones, it seems? I dunno. I'd love to see a smaller Mac Mini, as the non-existent competition has become strong in product lines like the Intel NUC and especially some of the newer Ryzen based ones, where it's far more powerful than, but only 1/3 or 1/4 the size of a Mac mini. They've lost that "edge" of being able to look at customers and say "Well what else are you going to buy? One of those office-model underpower Dell VESA mount SFFs?" (Which also have become far more current, rather than just using old, leftover, outdated tech.) Now though... It's "But this one is smaller, cheaper, and far more powerful! Why do I need your product, again?" - Apple needs to step up their game here, so they don't start looking stale.

This is very cool idea, and it got me wondering about the M1 logic board if it were sold as an upgrade for old macs… Like if you could turn your old Intel mini into an M1 as a fun DIY project or convert your old Thunderbolt Display into a chinless FrankeniMac… having everything on one board makes it seem so versatile. Not that Apple would ever sell a DIY M1 kit, but I wish they would. Cool video!

I like the methodology behind this. I personally would've included a VESA mounting option at the bottom of the new chassis to allow for the unit to be mounted to the back of the monitor for less visible cabling.

As usual, fantastic video and amazingly cool idea! Just a heads up, resin printed 3D parts may degrade a bit over time so you might need to take note of that. Its probably best if you print the case out in ABS as it can handle temperatures up to 100C with ease and it should last way longer than any resin printed components you use. You can try using some dual extrusion printers to print soluble supports for those cheesehole overhangs and you'd still get some amazing detail

Yep, you can FDM print it in ASA plastic which is thermally resilient to about 95°C, you can print the holes undersized and drill them out clean, and you can sand and fill the imperfections in outer surfaces with something like Revell putty. You can then spray paint it satin silver for the authentic look. Satin paint is a little difficult, i find that i need like 5 super fluffy light coats with intermediate 2000grit sanding. You don't strictly need a large format SLA printer to complete this project. Do be aware though that most "i want to buy a 3D printer" 3D printer ownerships are... not very successful, there tends to be more complexity and knowledge required than you bargained for, and most people give up. But i've had mine for over 4 years, and it was one of the best purchases i ever made!

The reason it has a 150W is precisely because you end up using 40-50% of that power. The peak efficiency of most power supplies (i.e. when there are minimal losses) is around 50% of peak capacity. It's also why most gaming computers have super beefy power supplies even though they most often consume 200-300W doing normal tasks.
