Hi Greg, I need all the confidence builders I can get. I am a “new” new rider, starting up again after 26 years not riding. I am practicing white belt in the parking lot then rewarding myself with an hour or so on the back roads in the mountains of western NC. Yesterday I had two incidents going wide because of target fixation. I’ve analyzed the incidents and I understand it’s about my head and eyes. It’s exciting to be learning and gaining confidence again. I can’t believe I’ve missed this video in all of yours that I watched - many over and over - but I’m very grateful to have found it because my stops are too jerky with too much front brake. Thank you so much!
@MotoJitsu5 жыл бұрын
Keep practicing and get into higher level courses when you’re comfortable. Unfortunately you are probably not the best person to analyze what happened, we are all the worst person to judge our own riding skills. Hopefully you have or will find a mentor, someone really good willing to practice with you and be honest about your skills and give you useful tips, etc.

I'm a short guy and recently bought a BMW R1200GS. The height and weight of the bike has always intimidated me a little, especially when putting my foot down at a stop with a passenger. I tried this exercise for about 10 min yesterday on my way home from work and I felt like it REALLY help smooth out my riding when coming to a stop and I feel a little more confident when putting my foot down at a stop. GREAT exercise! Thanks, Man!

Great tips. I'm a new rider and learned from MCrider much of what you recommend. One is to use the rear brake even after you're stopped. Be in first gear and pay attention to what's going on in front and rear. I'm ready to move out when the light changes or if the car behind gets too close. No day dreaming. My brother has ridden longer and talks like he knows everything yet he never took any training courses. It's then no surprise when he says, "Always put both feet down, be in neutral so you can rest the left hand. Makes no sense to me. It's not like the traffic light is so long, pulling in the clutch is a problem. I'll keep practicing tips you and other knowledgeable people give and become a better and safer rider. Look forward to more of your videos.

Well. I did that training today on a parking lot. AND some practice with the knees on the seat. Some day I'll do some training with both legs on one site. Like a side saddle (like the one used from women on the horse) - It is just for the balancing the bike while driving at first or second idling speed. the clutch all the way out, just let it go. Move the legs to the other side and sit down. Then stand up, move the other leg back and sit down again. It is just a great training. Great video though. Greetings from austria, buddy.

Thanks. But I'm not that experienced rider as you are. I'm a rider for approx 3 years, but I think - all rider should take some time on a parking lot to do some trainings for riding. Especially braking, emergency braking and swerfing. But that are parts of the driving test in austria. But if you keep that parts as your monthly training or better - weekly training - you might be a great rider. In fact - you'll get probably weird looking eyes on you - if you stand up, drive the bike without hands at 25 kph idling speed - and greet other bikers passing by. haha. Or sitting on your bike in the side saddle. haha. yeah. But thats the part of the training. You get comfortable with you bike - only that way. Really. It is important to train that handling with your bike. AND if you can handle it very well at sunny days - you will probably handle it very well at rainy days. AND I love to ride in the rain on the motorcycle, but I don't like to ride on the bycycle - while it keeps on raining. haha. :D

My main problem (outside of not having a bike, just got a permit a few days ago but won't be able to afford one for a few months), and I can't find any videos from anyone that clarifies if I have to downshift before every stop, WHY I have to downshift, or how I'd downshift from 5 to 1 quickly if the light turns yellow and I have to stop faster, but don't have time to slowly do all of that downshifting.

I gotta say that since 70% of your braking force comes from the front brake, it seems like a good thing to develop the habit of using the front brake to stop. And it leaves either foot available for putting down.

Would you suggest this for large bikes as well I have an Electra Glide and she’s a big beast and the weight of it can be intimidating. On smaller bikes I used the back brake technique but feel wobbly on the big bike a lot even having both feet down. Slow speed and stopping are definitely the most intimidating on this big bike

I'm not sure what this has to do with building confidence. Even when I was a nervous beginner it seemed like a no-brainer that it makes more sense to only use the rear brake for stopping when I'm not in a hurry to stop. Nowadays in such situations I usually don't use the rear brake either until the last one or two meters, by slowing down early using only engine braking and regulating the braking power with downshifts coupled with rev-matching. That reminds me, what I think helps more with building confidence with coming to a stop is to try not to stop at all. What I mean by that is when the rider is for example approaching a red light, they start slowing down early and try to keep their feet off the ground even they're going at crawling pace. It should improve the rider's ability to stay balanced at very slow speeds.
@MotoJitsu6 жыл бұрын
Good for you...have you actually tried this or are just assuming? If you're a new rider, taking a hand and foot off the bike and getting used to the balance and weight while stopping can be scary and a lot of new riders tip the bike over when stopping. Not all of us are experts day 1 like you. I hope you're not teaching anyone anything...no empathy or perspective from a new rider's perspective.
@KristianKumpula6 жыл бұрын
It seems like my comment has a tone that I didn't intend it to have. I don't consider myself an expert by any means, more like an intermediate. I was genuinely curious why a beginner would prefer coming to a stop with the front brake, since using the front brake at very low speed can upset the balance, especially if the front tire isn't pointing straight ahead. I've tried the exercise I described when I was taught it in driving school and also in a non-mandatory motorcycle handling course I took. The gist of it is to gently use the rear brake while slipping the clutch and using a bit of throttle to prevent the engine from stalling in order to go as slowly as possible while trying to stay balanced without touching the ground with your feet. As a beginner I found it a good way to practice keeping a bike balanced in low speeds, so it should also help with coming to a stop properly.

I am learning so much from your videos... Getting a new bike shortly and I'm going to be using these techniques to get familiar with it. One question. I notice you put your left foot down while the bike is still traveling. We were taught not to put it down until the bike is stopped (or almost). Can you clarify this for me please. Thank you.
@MotoJitsu6 жыл бұрын
I just do that for fun...lol it's fun to do. But I get my foot off at least 2 feet before I stop to ensure it doesn't get stuck or snagged on something. Plus I don't want to come to a dead stop then put my feet down...I'd rather have my foot ready already.

Great video!!! I have a question. When you're stopped and waiting for the green light. Do you wait on gear or on neutral? Keep posting videos man!!!

Fast Eddie’s Motorcycle Fun Can you please give a technical explanation of why beeing stoped in first gear that is not bad for your clutch and transmission instead of just beeing in neutral? The statement "I never use neutral" is pretty radical, in my opinion... Anyway, excelent video for begginers!
@MotoJitsu6 жыл бұрын
Sabeillard x Give me a reason to why it is bad! You claim it’s bad, it’s your responsibility to prove it, not mine. I’ve never heard of anyone have troubles due to leaving your bike in gear, and even if it was, I don’t care, I’ll still leave it in gear because I always want to be ready to go when stupid people behind me aren’t stopping. You can do what you want.
@sabeillard6 жыл бұрын
Fast Eddie’s Motorcycle Fun Go easy man! I don't want to prove anything, I don't want to be rude or something. I was just trying to understand your point. And yes, I know I can do what I want, no need to tell. I've heard some theories wich say that beeing for a long time with the clutch engaged that could harm the clutch springs. That is the explanation I would like to hear from you. But I understand that you go as far as "do what you want"... That's ok for me. I still consider your videos very interesting and smart. And the idea of beeing awhare of back traffic I agree, that's a good reason for hold the clutch. Thanks! ☺
@MotoJitsu6 жыл бұрын
My explanation point wasn't me yelling, all of my replies are done with me smiling or laughing....I've never heard of anyone having issues with holding in the clutch, ever and again, I wouldn't care if it was "bad" because my safety is more important than anything else.

Hello, thanks for the video it was very informative. I have a question, I feel “not so confident” when stopping and putting my left foot down, it’s like a phobia I’ve had since my bicycle days. Is there anything I should be on the look out for to help with this? When using my right foot I feel comfortable and confident. Also, while riding around do you hover your fingers over the front brake or keep them wrapped around the throttle? I haven’t ridden my bike as much because of lack of confidence, I wish to take it into the mountains and far far away :’)

Im was doing this mistake with Neutral. Than really as you describing, hurry the clutch, put the first gear and late start, whan the car in front tof me is already more ahead or i stalled of course. Im changing this one, to be on rear brake and under 1st gear- for sure it is faster and better. But sometimes the RED light is more than 5 minutes. I started to watch, after the car behind me is stopped and I see still cars crossing the street on their green light, than I put Neutral to rest left hand. After I see the crossing cars stopped, than I put back 1st gear to be ready to go on my green. Do you really , even the RED light is quite long, withstand to keep the clutch and 1st gear? Just asking if you see it this way OK or you prefer rather to be ready all the time. I can imagine even the car behind me is stopped, there could be other car or heavy truck behind him not stopping and crash them and push them to me, if im not ready to move forward to some other free space.
