That’s a lot a fuel needed to completely burn out the stump. Nice job, looked safe and well explained. Charcoal seems to be a valuable player on this team. Thanks for showing the finished product, and the amount of time/material needed for a stump this size.

The wood was free - I dismantled an old wooden terrace for most of the fuel - it was a massive tree stump

thank you - i tried the method on 2 smaller stumps before this one and it worked just as well - I killed 2 birds with one stone in that I dismantled an old wooden terrace and used that for fuel - at the end of the burn was just left a crater - all the roots that were showing above ground that spread out soon died and were easy to remove.

Personally, I found the quickest and most thorough method is to dig under two sides and create a small air flow underneath the stump before burning it. That method completely burns the stump in less than a day.
@r11hno4 жыл бұрын
It was to big to dig under but the drill holes had the same effect of creating the airflow

I don't have a lot of expirence with stump removal. I am attracted to using the rocket fire technique where you drill a flue through the center of the tree and start a fire from the inside.. If you put an external flue over the outside and run a leaf blower through the stump flue it seems as if it would be even better.... Soaking with carosine or heavy oil seems good as well. This combies three tecninques... Rocket fire, Fuel oil, diging out, and external insinerator... It feels like you can use less external wood/coal with this combination of techniques.

@r11hno2 жыл бұрын
Roots only grow if the tree is alive once the tree is cut down the roots will die - I hosed down the surrounding garden to keep the soil moist and knew we had rain coming in 3 days time. I waited 2 years before burning but that was only because I used it as a pot holder

With old dry pine you just need to drill a hole from top to bottom and at lest 3-4 evenly spaced around the bottom going at an angle toward the bottom center. Put fire down the middle hole and walk away. Pine has tar and pine tar burn great.

Whats an incinerator? And is it essential?
@r11hno5 жыл бұрын
the incinerator is the metal bin that is put around the stump - it reduces air flow so the stump burns slowly, it basically turns it into charcoal and just crumbles away. With this stump it was so big I had to burn 2/3 away before the incinerator would fit, I could have burned the rest away but I like the incinerator as its safe and i can walk away and let it do its job. hope that helps. This stump was over a meter wide.
@michaelmueller89766 жыл бұрын
Try a 1 1/2 inch hole in the center. At an angle toward the root drill holes from ground level. This acts like a chimney usually taking about 8-12 hours.

A pine tree of this size would have roots stretching out at least a couple of meters, by burning the stump down would the roots all die as well????
@r11hno6 жыл бұрын
It was a very large tree with roots coming up all along the lawn. I tried digging some up before the burn after the tree was cut down but it was a really hard job - however after the burn a year later all the remaining roots came up very easy, they had all started to rot.
@Johnny3voltz6 жыл бұрын
Excellent, thanks for the quick reply, I have to do the same and get rid of 3 stumps as Im having a swimming pool built and have been told that they can perforate the pool walls if not killed.

They will - also as an added bonus the pool is now enjoying more sunshine hitting it reducing heating cost and every year I was having pine needles falling in which was causing havoc with the water quality - its so easy to maintain now.

Wow! I am stunned at the effort you've gone to to get rid of that stump ..... digging out the sides, charcoal, kero, more charcoal, etc etc .... I am a POM living in NZ and I have been burning out stumps for the last 15 years on various properties ... currently have 22 pine stumps to burn out of diameters up to 750mm. All I do is cut them as low as possible, wait about 1 year, then set a fire on top about 2pm (byelaws on fire being 'out' by dusk) that is just brush and small branches, that burns full flame out 4 hours, then continues to smoulder for about 5 days and the stump is gone. All you are left with is a starfish shape in the ground where the root system was. The only difference, I'm assuming, is that the ground we have is pumice rich which may hold the heat better and assist the residual heat in burning out the roots.
@r11hno4 жыл бұрын
It may look like a lot of work but I found it easy - as I was dismantling a wooden terrace and clearing the garden, I used the fire to get rid of all the old wood killing two birds with one stone and the digging was 10 min light work

Can I say how fortunate you are in Brittany, being allowed garden fires. I see you posted this in October 2016 but as far as I'm aware, all of France banned bonfires and burning of garden waste back in 2011. I must say it's a ridiculous law as we have a property in Burgundy that we hadn't been able to get to for about 10 months, until early this October and only for 2 and a half weeks and you can imagine how much garden waste I generated in that time from an acre of garden. As it was, I only completed about a quarter of what needed doing and didn't even attempt to go to the Marie to try for a permit as it has been so dry this year, I assumed if they do issue permits at all it would have resulted in a big 'NON'! I still have 3 dead trees to fell and shrubs, hedges etc to do. So I hope to get back in March 2019 and get it done then and there is far to much (and thorny) to put in the car and we don't possess a trailer to take it to the dump. Personally I think it's a stupid law as I think they could allow 1 if not 2 bonfires a year. After all it would imply that if you are not allowed to burn such material how long until they ban log fires in the home? Any how I found your video quite interesting.
@r11hno6 жыл бұрын
I just asked my neighbour who is the head person of our Hamlet, who's son works at the Marie and she said only after the summer could I light a fire and it had to be done in the evening. I have since seen her light many a fire during the day and lots of other locals doing the same - I even had permission from a local Farmer to use his field after his crop was harvested to burn a mass of conifer branches - it was a bonfire some 20 feet high with flames reaching an additional 20 feet and smoke seen for miles - no one came for a word with me. I was not aware of a National Ban. This tree stump was huge but the garden is so much lighter and bigger without that monster in the middle. Good luck with your clearance all the best Mark

@@r11hno Mark, thanks for that but it just goes to prove how each Department in France seems to implement their own interpretation of Government policy. we used to light a fire, not even soak the stump just a natural fire, wait for it to burn down to hot coals then stick a half a galvanised steel water tank over it and just let it roast. a week later you could feel the heat coming up from the ground and the trace of dead grass where the roots were

You could have saved yourself a lot of time and firewood by just drilling a 1 inch hole through the side at the bottom of the stup, and also a 1-in hole from the top to the other hole drilled through the side and the bottom and made a rocket stove that would have burn it out nicer and cleaner.

10 lbs of Ammonium Nitrate fertilizer + enough 800 mesh aluminum (sorry aluminium, I'm American and can't pronounce the word properly) to coat the prills, pour under the stump and shoot it with a centerfire rifle. Takes a couple thousandths of a second and the stump is now sawdust. Google "Tannerite" if you're not familiar.

Seems like a big overkill. 24 plus hours to do what an hour with a decent stump grinder would accomplish. I had a 52” wide stump, gone in hour including cleanup, dirt fill in and smoothing. $150 - clean, quick, over with. Not to mention the chance of fire spreading (especially leaving it for 3 hours) - good way for wind to come up and refire up the slightest hot spot. Seen a whole patch woods burned down for that same situation. Plus many areas won’t let you burn bonfire like this anytime (has to be contained, permitted) and only certain times of year. Like I say, if I couldn’t afford $150 or less if you rent a machine...I would just put a big planter on it - leave to soil bugs.Drill holes, fill with alfalfa meal or a high nitrogen fertilizer in holes, cover with mulch, keep damp...put plant on top in meantime. Build a big raised bed around it, fill with dirt, grown eggies or plants around outside.Again use center to set up planter or fountain. See pinterest for stump ideas...lots of options from leaving it taller and topping with table top, making a seat out of it with saw, chunking out center for a planter, making lit art, and the most fun..making tree houses aka hobbit or fairy houses out of one..piping added and a container make neat fountain planter combo.
