We Eastern Orthodox Christians love our incense. Fortunately, incense is not only for use in church, but can be used at home as well. This video shows how to light the charcoal and burn the incense. For a cleaner, non-charcoal option, scroll down to the bottom of this Description.
Supply Links
• Censers, charcoal, and incense can be purchased from Holy Cross Monastery in Wayne, WV.
www.holycross....
Some of my favorite incense scents are Damask Rose, Byzantium, Old Church, Nazareth, Evergreen and Embers, and Catacombs.
NO CHARCOAL OPTION?
If you or members of your household have asthma, or you just don't like the mess of charcoal, there are now other options. Look up tea light (or electric) incense burners on places like Etsy and Amazon. Here's an example of one: amzn.to/3Rv7vQt.

Some Orthodox add bay/laurel leaves as a gesture evoking Christ's Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. Usually 4 leaves are placed in the censer, prior to the lit charcoal and incense, in cruciform with their points extending from beneath the charcoal pellet/s; one tip at each point: north, south, east, west.

You can actually burn incense without charcoal as well, in a burner that has a candle at its base and an incense holder on top. If open fire catches the incense it will ruin it, but if only the heat of a candle reaches it, the incense will begin to release its fragrance and a bit of smoke, less than with charcoal.

Thank you for the video, Jeremiah. I have seen some people place foil in their censer to prevent damage being done to the metal. Is this needed? Does the charcoal really do that much damage?
@OrthodoxRoad
@OrthodoxRoad 11 ай бұрын
I apologize for the late reply. Foil inside is not something that I've ever done. Unless you have something antique and valuable that you need to keep perfectly preserved, I don't see the sense in it. And if you have something like that, you should probably use a different censer anyway. Censers get sticky resin and other blemishes after a lot of use. To me, it's just part of using one. Like a car, it's going to get dirty. But they can be cleaned periodically.

Does the ash need to be disposed of in a special way or do you just throw it in the garbage?
@OrthodoxRoad
@OrthodoxRoad 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Karla, ash should be disposed of in a respectful way. Most frequently, I bury it outside. The point is to put it in a place that it won't be trampled on. If your living situation doesn't allow that sort of thing (such as being in an apartment in a city), then ask your priest if you can bring it to him.

Once everything cools down completely, I dump the ash into a small container. Once that fills up, I bury it outside. Same goes with anything else that is use in the prayer corner: burn and bury.
@LazarIvanda
@LazarIvanda 2 жыл бұрын
@@OrthodoxRoad Thank you for the answer. My incense burner over time accomulates hard sediment which influances the incense smell. I'm not sure if I should use a chemical to clean the hardened sediment or try to pry it out somehow.
@OrthodoxRoad
@OrthodoxRoad 2 жыл бұрын
@@LazarIvanda That hard substance is likely resin build up. Some people are able to get it cleaned off by soaking the censer in warm, soapy water for several hours. Other times it takes rubbing alcohol or acetone to clean. Be careful with the latter two cleaners since they can remove the finish from your censer.
