Drill hole saw bits with the drills clutch on super light, that way when the drill punches through the steel the hole saw bit catches and the clutch engages. Never had a single problem drilling holes this way.

I have a barrel, ready to start on it, looks like yours in the video , green with a liner , held baking sodas, some guys are saying if the barrel is galvanized it’s not safe to cook in because of zinc, it’s looks to me like most people use this type of barrel, I’m confused before I even get started Any experience would be appreciated Stu

Just because the paint on the outside is burned of does not mean all the inside liner is gone. I've burned some barrels that need extreme heat and wire brushing to get to the metal on the inside.

It always seemed odd to me that people buy food safe barrels and then take the time to remove the liner.. like you said, as long as you burn it out and clean it, it should be useable. And much less work

What is the process for prepping a non-food grade barrel? Do you still burn it out? Do you just scrub it and sand it? I soaked mine with simple green and rinsed well, but there is still residue of oil and cleaner in it. Advice is welcome

I bought a barrel that was used for some strong clear chemical storage. I burned it out once for 6-7 hrs. Will that have burned out all the toxic chemicals?? I plan on burning it out one more time. Just to make sure, but want to turn it into a UDS.

In theory, but I can not promise it did. It would totally depend on what the chemical was.

Hey buddy, sorry for the late reply! some people have had success with a propane torch but usually it just bakes the liner on worse. You can also have the drum sandblasted, this is way easier but can cost $50 or so.

This may be a dumb question but can’t you just use paint stripper on the whole barrel and save yourself a lot of time?

Paint stripper would work fine on the outside, I’m not sure what type of chemicals would be needed for the inner portion for the liner.

Yes, we recommend you do remove the liner as it is not high temperature food safe, only food safe for non high temperature applications.

You might not want to use OSB to burn it out . It`s full of glues .So your first smoking will taste like OSB glue. YUK.
