I tossed a handful of play sand in mine, Dawn and then used a low power pressure washer to (blast) the inside. When the sand flows out, add a little more sand if needed. Best way to remove liner from the very bottom and the area where the bottom is crimped to the sides. Done.

Barkeepers Friend is amazing stuff for restoring the look of your stainless steel pans. I've used it on just about every one I've owned, and it takes the cooking surface back to a factory look.

Ash is caustic. So is comet and BKF. Neutralizing with an acid does work pretty good. Acetic acid at 5% works well if you're going to paint. It will last longer.

I wish I saw this video before trying to get the paint off of my food grade 55gal drum. I'm using a propane torch. The out side burned off pretty good, but that tan coating on the inside is an absolute pain to get burned or sanded off. Lesson leaned for my next build.

Thank you sir. Your videos have been very helpful. Is there an alternative to removing the liner from the bottom of the lid besides using a grinder? Thanks

That brush you used to clean the rust inside was big and looked like it was effective. What type is it? What kind of surface would you normally clean with it?

I used paint remover on the inside and out and got it bare metal. But now I think I need to burn out this chemicals right? Or do you think scrub with comet would be enough?

Fill it with about 15 gallons of gravel, and push it around in circles with your lawn mower, It will clean all the left over shit out of the barrel to bare metal, hit it with a pressure washer, then season it..

I found a barrel but it had some industrial chemical foam in it. If I burn it out can the chemicals that where in hurt you if it’s been burned out
@SmokerBuilder
@SmokerBuilder 4 жыл бұрын
On most chemicals they won't survive the fire. If you are uncertain what the chemical was or have any other questions about it then I recommend looking for the MSDS sheet which will tell you all about the chemical. I do however recommend finding barrels that had things like coconut oil or similar things in them rather than foam, glue, or other nasty things.

@@SmokerBuilder I bought one that had mineral spirits in it and burned it out twice. I will do one more good hot long burn and then wash it like you did. You think that will be good to use?

After burning and cleaning the inside. You said spray it with wd40 or something to prevent rust. Do you just leave it like that until your done with the out side.
@SmokerBuilder
@SmokerBuilder 4 жыл бұрын
yep, I spray the outside with some kind of anti rust stuff. wd-40 works good. but you will need to use an oil and wax remover to clean the barrel before painting to remove the oil so the paint will stick.
@ernrod47
