How to burn regular computer grade CD-R/CD-RW with Pioneer PDR-609

I apologize for the sound quality. This miserable Canon PowerShot S100 camera - wherever you hold it, you cover ether the flash, the lens or the microphone. I hate this camera.
Just an idea for you guys how to burn regular CD-R/CD-RW with Pioneer PDR-609 (no need to burn on CD-R Audio/CD-RW Audio)
Some notes to this video:
1) You got to have a NEW unused Audio-grade disc of the same type as you're going to burn on. If you're going to burn a CD-R have a new CD-R Audio at hands, if you're going to burn a CD-RW have a new CD-RW Audio at hands. The method works for both CD-R and CD-RW types.
2) Do not mix the R/RW disc types, it won't work. You can mix different brands and capacities, it's OK.
3) The Audio-grade discs are only used for disc detection process, and will not be burned on or destroyed. Once the new CD-R or CD_RW disc is detected, the Audio-grade disc should be removed, see video how to do this ;) and put in a regular computer-grade disc of the same type. The actual recording will be performed on the regular computer-grade disc.
4) Once you have start burning this way, you got to finalize the disc before opening the CD tray, otherwise it can be wasted. I am not sure there is a way to read pre-recorded but not finalized "non-Audio" discs with this consumer burner. You got to test this yourself.
5) Warning for the laser radiation once the cover and shield are removed!!!
6) If you are handy with soldering iron and have enough knowledge to mess around with fine SMD electronics, you can feed the loading motor with +/5 Volts or whatever it requires, and place an external mini toggle switch DPDT On-Off-On to open or close the CD tray WITHOUT pushing the "original" button. Lead the wires and the toggle switch out of the case, and you'll never need to remove the cover and the shield again.
7) The shield over the CD-ROM is there for a good reason. Pioneer has used a switching mode PSU in this model, which emits quite some high freq noise. The function of the laser pick-up may be affected without shield installed!

This is a very good way! I improved it on the basis of your idea: disconnect the tray motor lead under the original CD drive, set a cable to connect to a switch SW1 (the switch is installed on the rear panel of the machine), introduce 6.5V DC from the power supply, and connect the DC to the tray motor through the forward and reverse switch SW2 (to control the forward and reverse rotation of the tray motor). In this way, it can be operated conveniently without disassembling the machine. Thank you very much for your video!

This pioneer was the same set as HHB which could use normal CDR because it was a professional unit. Maybe a hack could make it is similar by replacing the chip that read the disc info. Anyone found which chip to reprogram?

Your Pioneer CD recorder doesn't like the simple CD-R's you can use for the PC recorder? He wants to have the expensive ones with the "for audio" label on the cover? With this extension you save much money with every CD. Easy to use! No external switches or wires, everything is to handle with the normal remote control! If you insist on an operating switch with a wire, you can get it... The additional circuit is a modern ATMEL single chip processor. Not like other upgrades on the market, this modification does not have any additional switches. Before audio recording you must use a real audio CD-R an let the PDR-04, PDR-05, PDR-509 or PDR-555RW read the TOC. After recognizing the audio CD-R (consumer CD-R) and ending up the initial procedure you must press the keys CHECK and CLEAR on the remote control. Now the tray opens and you can exchange the audio CD-R with a profi CD-R (the cheap computer CD-R). To close the tray, press again the keys CHECK and CLEAR on the remote control. For the PDR-509, PDR-609 and PDR-555RW the same procedure is valid for CD-RW's! Opening and closing of the tray is programmed in a way, that the internal processor won't notice anything. This means, the recorder (still thinking to have an audio CD-R) uses the profi CD-R like the audio CD-R. Be careful not to open the tray before ending the FINALIZE procedure. Only PAUSE and STOP are OK to press. If you should press the keys EJECT or POWER before ending the FINALIZE procedure, you can throw away your CD-R. In clear: when having began to record a profi CD-R, open the tray first, when you don't want a further recording. PDR-05, PDR-509 and PDR-555RW speciality: Besides being able to record CD-RW's with the PDR-509 and PDR-555RW (attention: if you want to record a cheap CD-RW, please use a "for audio" CD-RW for the fake!) break up recording on the cheap CD-R(W). To resume recording you must put again at first an empty audio CD-R, and after reading it you can use the partly recorded. The display of the PDR-05 / PDR-509 / PDR-555RW flashes "REPAIR" and it reads the old status! For damages, originating from improper usage, we don't take any liability. All claims, also from third persons are excluded.

This has been a known trick for many years, however, not exactly convenient which is why people went for the likes of tascam where you can use either regular cdr/cdrw for date or Audio cdr/cdrw. Doing it this way, aside from the inconvenience is that it can cause failed or faulty "burns" as the OPC (which basically corrects the laser for burning on to the disc layer) isn't correct.

This is working on most CD-Recorders made in the past. Some do not need to be fully opened, just attach a good grip on the CD-Door and pull it out and push it back in. That's e.a. possible with a Philips CDR-870 and a lot more devices like it.

The cheap CDR must be the same (color) type like the audio CDR otherwise the burned disc suffered errors and distorted. Because I did that with the Philips 870.

Whenever you will sell your Canon S100, you know where to find a buyer! For me, it was fantastic until the camera lens got stuck 3rd time and needed a solid repair, then I did not dare to use it as my "one and only" camera. But until then! :)

DJ X-Ray You can use any input, digital or analog. The idea is to make the cd burner to believe it is having an audio-grade cd inside. For the analog inputs you will need to adjust recording level to be no higher than 0db on the meter.

Great video by the way - it's becoming harder and harder to find decent CD-R Audio Discs in the shops I used to see them all the time . I found TDK were the best and Verbatim. I'm recording my live DJ sets from my archives from Minidisc to play in my car and due to not being able to make 2ND generation copies digitally I have to record in analogue. Thanks again . @@alexsfera2471 as long as you can pull the draw open without pressing the open button it should work. The 880s draw was perfect almost like it was made to do this. Also you have to finalise the disc straight after recording it, if you switch off the machine or eject using the open button the disc will be no good unless you can finalise it in a pc?

@@alexeijolkin7851 yes, my unity is not close any type of discs, even for consumer, te record finish, play very well but when i try to close a message came on the display "04:15" and freeze... So is not a problem with a regular CD or not, My unity is broken to close... Sorry for the coment!

Cassius Belle when you finalize a disc in the Pioneer you press ‘finalize’ and when the TOC displays it’s ‘4:15’ or whatever it may be and freezes, you need to press pause to start the finalising procedure. Are you not pressing pause by any chance?

Вы правы записать как показано на диск возможно, но если запись идёт непрерывно, а потом когда нажмёте на стоп показывает что диск пустой и финализировать не возможно. Пусть покажут как финализировать простой сд диск ....А это что показано на видимо для дураков....

What's the point of all this? Why not just record onto a music CD in the first place? A music CD can be played in any CD drive (if finalized).

This is OK as a last resort, but too much of a hassle. Imagine doing that every time you want to record something.
