"Some people just want some bad ass camera gear .. " @5:55 CLASSIC LINE .. haha!
@jordanpanderson8 жыл бұрын
Haha they do! They just want to wear the RED logo baseball hat or be able to put "RED Owner" on their business card. It's ridiculous.
@nextstar557 жыл бұрын
you can shoot weddings and music videos for local artist and shoot ads for local business its a lot of ways you can make money to pay for the camera and you should never be scared to make a investment if you truly believe in your abilities...
@jordanpanderson7 жыл бұрын
You absolutely can. And yes, if you're passionate, you will find a way to make it work. One of my friends opened a 0% credit card for Year 1, he then bought $10,000 worth of camera gear, then over the course of that year earned the money back. Risk vs. Reward.

Awesome video dude! and its quite sad that some one with about zero talent can get almost any job just because they have a movie camera vs the other guy that is loaded with talent but still can hardly afford anything :(
@jordanpanderson7 жыл бұрын
It's a shame when you hear about it. But to be fair to them, it can be a great motivator. You have now this huge monthly bill over your head so that means you have to hustle constantly. They then use the RED to get work, rinse and repeat.
@raymondrahner7 жыл бұрын
Jordan P. Anderson Yes. and also I heard the other way around as well. I heard that if you want to get lots of DP jobs, its best not to own one camera system because they will think you only use that brand or something like that. I seen someone selling their Scarlet W because of this...
@Eddie2Bristow7 жыл бұрын
Aint this the truth. I've seen people on freelance websites buy drones and clients just bend over for beautiful drone shots. I don't loose sleep though. Do they have training? The licenses and insurance to fly it? These are the sand lines that separate a pro from an amateur. Gear is just a part of it. It's Gear + Value + Professionalism + Consistency + Reliability that pros get paid for. As for gear, You have to justify it. I mean I don't shoot wild life films so I don't own or rent skateboard sized lenses, but guys that shoot for Nat Geo do. Overhead and price can be a motivation and justify you to get to work, but you want to sell first and buy later. Basically make sure you have work first, then go renting. Just buying fancy toys and hoping is a "build it they will come" mentality. Might as well build a surf shack in the Sahara.

We all start some where, there is no reason to divide the two. I started out with a 5,000 camera setup and it was my motivation to learn and learn to shoot and edit etc..it's now my career and I continue to learn and grow.

Sounds like a great basis for a partnership! Your partner knows what he's doing... and you learn how to be awesome with your camera by being his assistant for a year.

Most people need to learn how to sell. Easy to fall into the very expensive trap of "well if i just have xyz piece of equipment, thennnn people will buy my services".
@jordanpanderson7 жыл бұрын
Blake, I agree with you 100%. Some creative types hate that word or hate the idea of mixing business with their art. And yes, people fall into that trap of "better equipment = better videos". We need to go back to Square One: Good Storytelling.

This was very helpful, Jordan. You confirmed the exact same thoughts and questions that I have been considering before buy the RED Epic 8k. I have been weighing my options heavily. Luckily I have a interested investor.

Thanks for the advice. I have owned 7 cameras in 8 years, and I recently bought the red epic w. The reason I spent $28k ($10k discount as a red scarlet w buyer who never got the camera) on a camera is I feel like renting over and over is a waste of money and time. I'm also hoping that this camera will be my last camera purchase for a few years bc it's future-proof in a way. It has already got me a lot of work, and although most cinematographers prefer arri, clients love the red name.
@jordanpanderson8 жыл бұрын
Your thought process on this matter really makes sense. So you have been flipping cameras over those 8 years? Buying new and selling used?
@chrisbennett18648 жыл бұрын
Thanks it really allows me to learn the ins and outs of each camera and I think makes me more hirable. I buy new or used and sell to friends usually. The RED is the only purchase I've been nervous about bc it's so expensive, but that picture quality is worth it.

Jordan, good stuff man. Like your video, like your tips on thinking about back fire situations so thanks for taking the time filming and editing this for us folks thinking about pulling the trigger. Question for you Jordan: Im a DP with a Ronin and canon 60d with a dji phantom 3 pro. If i pulled the trigger with RED RAVEN for 25K after all the bells and whistles, I heard it sucks at LOW LIGHT so if I purchased the RED RAVEN I need to light my scene up like the 4th of july. I wont go sony fs7 because the film look on the RED is different from the fs7 and I prefer the RED look over the Sony. I dont want dots in my damn footage so am I going to spending another 10k on great lighting equipment or should I not be worried about that because cheap lighting will still make RED footage good without noise in my shot
@jordanpanderson8 жыл бұрын
Hey Jordan, thanks for the question. Gimme a bit more context -Who are your clients? -What kind of videos are you making? -How committed are you to the "RED look"?
@PickleFlixTV8 жыл бұрын
clients are real estate high end mansions, on the side I make short films on my canon 60D but I show them in movie theaters every year in August so I feel since I know I want to do this for the rest of my life, Go RED ? Im addicted man with the RED, I look at footage every day
@jordanpanderson8 жыл бұрын
+Jordan Bryant I would say go RED. But! Build a solid light kit (KinoFlo, arri, LED), get grip stands and light modifiers.

Another great upload Jordan. Do you have any experience in financing a purchase this big? As an individual it's really hard to get a personal loan for something like that. Maybe it's a different story for someone with a business/commercial account?
@jordanpanderson8 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Jonathan. I don't have any direct experience with BIG purchase. I've always leaned towards renting gear. I would say, yes, it would help. Every financial institution is different but all of them are gonna want to know that the money that they are loaning you will return. I would consider writing a business plan around the model of renting in order to spell out to the bank how you're going to make that money back. Cheers!

Thanks for the vid! It took me some sucking up to get over the RED Epic-W, but I think it's best if I have a secure way to bring in $$$ through filming before investing in a RED.
@jordanpanderson7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yeah, the RED is beastly but super expensive. Some people take a huge risk and buy before having the cash. This is not my strategy of choice.
@MisterDoge7 жыл бұрын
I would still reccomend getting the blackmagic ursa mini 4.6k. It costs 3,000-5,000 and most people an afford it after some saving up.
Good video but one thing you failed to touch on is filmmakers who are not looking to be hired and have the means to purchase such systems. Renting gear every time you want to shoot your projects can get costly enough to where owning makes more sense.
@jordanpanderson7 жыл бұрын
A fair point. If you have the means to buy and it makes sense, go for it. There's a certain point where renting loses you money vs. actually buying the camera. The simple math would be yearly rental costs vs. the camera's actual price.

I have a Sony fs5 and getting Sony fs 7 2 with sony 110mm Cine lenses, is there a big difference between Red camera 1/3 of price?
@jordanpanderson8 жыл бұрын
Is there a big difference? It depends on the cinematographer and color grade in post. I've seen "RED" footage that looked like a Canon 60D footage. Can you out perform RED with the FS7? Yes, you can.
