I'm definitely no fan of Chinese scooters, but it annoys me that everyone always points out that Chinese scooters are "plastic" while Vespas are "metal". The Vespa's body has to be metal because they don't have a frame underneath it, and rely entirely on the body for structural integrity. The plastic on a Chinese or Japanese scooter is non structural exterior body panels attached to a steel frame underneath. Piaggio (the manufacturer of Vespa) also build many models with steel frames and plastic body panels, so it can't be such a terrible idea, can it? And remember, plastic won't dent or rust.

Wouldn't one of the better quality Chinese scooters (Znen or Linhai, badged as Aeolus, SSR, or BMS in the USA, and Lexmoto or AJS in the UK) be a more appropriate comparison to the LML/Stella and Vespa?

I have a Stella 4T and although they are great the rubber bits suck and if you don't have a garage, expect to replace most of the rubber bits. The electrics aren't that good either but it's the same with an old school shifty Vespa. If you get the Stella or a Shifty Vespa, invest in some tools, spare cables, and have patience as you are gonna have to do some wrenching at some point. If going the Genuine route, (for the newbies), get the Buddy. It's rock solid and in the 5 years and 30,000 miles it's never left me stranded. The Tao Tao you get what you pay for. They can last a long time but take more work. I'd advise to be very diligent with the upkeep on the Tao Tao....

+Georgio A -I think what Rolling Wrench meant by Chinese Scooters was Mainland/People's Republic of China scooters. Not the Taiwanese-made scooters which make good quality scooters for Honda, Yamaha, etc. One thing not mentioned about the mainland Chinese scooters is that there's not many shops that will work on them.

Jie Chen, Obviously you get what you pay for, but consumers need to be warned that many mainland Chinese scooters break down easily and nobody will repair them. If you disagree, please name those quality scooters. I recommend to people who want a good quality scooter for cheap, to buy a name-brand scooter (Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha) and buy it used. Most used scooters have only a few hundred miles on them and are half (or more) the price of a new scooter. Because those name-brands are of good quality, they last a long time and will ride many miles/kilometers.

legitimatemind, Please understand I am aware of this. What I was referring to is the company. Vespa/piaggio is a Italian company, Honda is a Japanese company..... and so on. The point of the video was to show you the quality differences per brand, regardless of where they are really built. Thanks for watching

i own a 1984 red cv80 scooter its a 2 stroke 80cc engine (looks like the stella) its in great shape and ive got it up to 50mph i got it for $300 on craigslist, i love it.also, i just bought a 2008 schwinn hope 50cc (looks like the blue Chinese scooter but the headlight is different and the dash(has more features). yea it only goes 31mph but its cool and it has low miles and NO RUST. but im going to drive my red 1984 scooter mostly, it gets a lot of looks probably never going to sell it, it also has the original tailbox with it. the guy i bought it from gave me a set of brand new tires and brakes for it, so i got a good deal.

From what I no vespa is the highest quality scooters you can get you could say the BMW of scooters they look the best. You no when buying them they will not break down.. I'm trying to get one this year. And enjoy it this summer. I would be looking at a 250" or 300 like 2013/ 2014

just got back from Cambodia the biggest seller appears to be the Honda dream 125 cc. some have big mileage and bullet proof . I seen them selling new at 1800 US dollar .

Nothing wrong with chinese Scooters as long you change sparkplug and oil you be good , i change the oil on my Baotian twice a year and the gearoil every 2000km or similar and it's still going strong 😎

How are 2 stroke engines obsolete? Are they banned or taxed more than 4 stroke motors? The existence of 2 stroke weed wackers, chain saws, etcetera will mean that the fuel will be available. I do think people should choose a cleaner burning engine. I am only questioning whether "obsolete" is the most accurate word to use to describe those motors.

Its ok saying that the Vespa is better than the TauTau, but it also costs way more. In fact I just got a TauTau type of scooter for less than $1,000, whereas my neighbor just paid $4,000 for his Vespa.

question: I was considering on buying a scooter like the tao tao to commute to work and its less than 8miles away. if i did this for 4 or 5 days a week, would i get my moneys worth or would i need a higher value scooter? I have a Yamaha Vino 125 from 2008, great and stylish the scooter has over 6K on it and i have no problems. So why don"r you do your home work and read up on the Chinese Scooters, My scooter was made in China runs great looks great and is half the cost if your vespa, They are over priced and the people that buy them do so to have others look at them, Bottom line is buy a brand name and you wont go wrong

i have a 150 tao tao it gets shit mpg 13 miles and its on e with a 1.4 gallon tank it doesent leak it has a lot of power and goes 55 mph it has 100 miles on it do u have any suggestions

Fyi the Stella is the original Vespa P series large frame bought by Indian company LML. Stella is the badge but it's DNA is the original Vespa P series.. Just saying If you want an old school Vespa P series get the Stella.

Not a vespa? It's a vespa PX series, but faster. Reed valve not rotary injection. Plus front disc. FYI lml the company that actually makes the stella made the vespa p series. 99% of parts are interchangeable with said vespa. The real difference is automatic v manual, and 2 v 4 stroke.

That's because LML was a licenced maker for vespa in the india/asian market and retain the right to keep making the P series after separating from vespa, called the 'star' by LML, genuine became the importer and badged it 'Stella' (italian for star..). in 2010 Stella went 4 stroke. I have a 2012 4 stroke.

The review - this is metal, that is plastic, and the rest "feels cheap". And then we learn that UV in sunlight will eventually dry and discolor plastic..... And the TaoTao goes for ~$400-500 in China. You can buy SIX for the price of ONE Vespa. Let's see, a Toyota and a Porsche GT3 has a better price ratio differential! So using this criterion, one would be better off buying a GT3 for simple travel around town - which is nice, as I look REALLY good sitting in a GT3. A waste of time.

I have chinese 50cc scooter 4 stroke. Now 2stroke is always faster then 4 stroke. My scooter is using only fuel, but 2 stroke use mix of fuel and oil. Engine smells on oil and creates smoke. Thats why i dont like 2 stroke . Also i enjoy driving my scooter thats why i bought it in first place. Speed isnt important. Parts are cheaper for Chinese scooter then for some other expensive brand. If you are on budget then get chinese. You get some thing for different amount of money.

All of these are subpar quality scooters. The quality goes in the following order: Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, and then Korean brands like Kymco, Sym, etc... but those are hit and miss. Vespas are known to be problematic and non-reliable. They are stylish though, in a way.

Both Kymco and SYM are from Taiwan. They are more affordable than Japanese ones while as reliable as they are. Kymco are making 650 c.c. scooter engines for BMW. Kawasaki 300J is twin brother of Kymco Downtown 300. Both are made by Kymco. PGO is also from Taiwan with strong acceleration.

Sorry Chinese scooters are among the cheapest built; many of them you can't even find parts. My brother owned one and did all the repairs required, and within just a little over one year, the engine was shot. You can buy a cheap scooter, but the chances are you'll pay for it one way or another. It is unfortunate to see people falling for the cheap scooters and to see the things that come apart and break in a short amount of time. You get what you pay for. There are scooters that we see that have been around for many years, decades. I am just saying be careful, it's your money, your choice.
