I just bought my very first reptile, a gorgeous Ball Python from JKR. He arrived yesterday and I’m thrilled! I actually cried when I saw him, he’s beautiful and I’m so happy with him. They’ve been wonderful and so helpful to me. I did about a years worth of research because I want to do everything right and I’m so glad I did. I would never buy from a pet store because I’ve heard too many horror stories and a good breeder is much better in my opinion. We bought both snakes through morph market. Corn snake we had shipped. But for my BP, I used the map option on MM and found a local breeder and went and picked up the snake. I definitely preferred that way over the shipping (but shipping did go smoothly for me). Also, expos are a great way to buy because you have tons of options all right there and you can talk to the different breeders and really get a good feel for what you want and who you want to support

Solid video Bob👍🏾. My wife and I lucked out with our first 3 (2 from a big box pet store & 1 from an exotic pet store). The rest of our scale babies came from BP only breeders. The only problem we had was the the 2 from the big box store. They did not have accurate feeding info (last feed date, preferred feeding method, & size of prey). Knock on wood, no RI or mites with any of our scale babies. Temperaments were super, only Mick Jagger was a little head shy. Keep the edutainment coming & take care.

They're allowing me to come and interact a little each day until I'm ready to take her (don't actually know the sex, but frick it) home! She's a super chill, very curious little snake. Totally agree about the bad grammar! I messaged someone on MorphMarket about one of their normals, and they responded with a lot of misspellings and grammar errors that just seemed off to me. They also mentioned that the snake was 3 years old but still hissed every time they opened up his rack, which signaled to me that he wasn’t socialized and would be too difficult for me to take on as a first time snake owner. Hey Bob-thanks for posting these informative and educational videos. I'm thinking about getting a Ball/Royal, but still doing research. I've seen a lot of videos, read many articles, and have even rented some books from the library, but your videos are the most comprehensive. Quick question though-what is the ideal temperature of the room where you keep your snakes? I think in one of your other videos you mentioned 78 F, but all temperature information seems to pertain to the enclosure itself, not the actual room it is stored in. I'm concerned because I typically keep my place cooler, and I'm worried about negatively impacting the snake. For example, if my thermostat is at 72 F, could that potentially impact the enclosure's inside temperature? Thanks so much!
@GreenRoomPythons3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Glad you like the videos. That's a great question. I keep the snake room a little warmer - between 76-78. If the room is 72° you might have a hard time keeping the ambient temps up in the snakes enclosure (depending on your setup).
@VanHelsing343 жыл бұрын
@@GreenRoomPythons Makes complete sense. If 76-78 works for the snakes then that's what I'll set my thermostat to should I decide to get one. Eric the murderer🤦♂️🤣🤣🤣 BTW I bought Ziggy with a breeder of Cal Kings. He's an aberrant cal king 66% het albino. He was born 29june 2020 and I have him since August 24 2020. Best source to buy your snake is with a breeder imo. And here in Belgium I pet stores it's not that bad because here you we have strict laws and there has to be an employee that has to know about the reptiles they sell. Most of the times it are cornsnakes and hognose, and bearded dragons and sometimes ball pythons. But here in big shops they know there stuff most off the time (if not the shop will be closed very fast) and the set up is actually great too. I speak about my local shop. But still I bought mine with a breeder with a very good reputation over the whole world. I bought him with Colubra its in Zulte/Belgium they ship all over the world. I also went to the vet immidiatly to be absolutely sure, and yes he was very healthy, and was indeed a male. I go every year to a vet for a checkup. And this year he went the 4th January and again he's super healthy. Now he's in shed. Also the breeder asked me foto's about the set up. So I was happy about that they don't sell to everyone. And I talked to him alot before I went afther my snake. I paid 130euro for him. I found it an excellent price.

Do the genetics of a Ball Python have any effect on its care?
@GreenRoomPythons2 жыл бұрын
No. There are some cases in a couple genes where their genetics come with neurological problems and if that's bad enough, you may have some different care. The vast majority of morphs just change the paint job of the snake though :-)

I'll be off to pick a pretty lady up in like 4 days. I met her once at the shelter where she has been for the past 3 years. I am so nervous...

Just personally, I disagree with the bit about asking questions to breeders. I think they should be open to answering questions whether Im a buyer today or buyer next month. We're always told as potential reptile owner to research and ask questions but theres a ton of different answers out there. I've watched dozens of snake videos and often times people contradict themselves. Even google will say varying info. Its nice to get the perspective of someone who has personal success raising the animal I want to commit to for 20-40 years. That "annoying kid" asking questions might turn out to be a huge buyer 5-10 years later and remember your patient guidance. It gives off an air of gatekeeping for people who want to get into the hobby when you cant make time for those who are keen on doing things the right way. Thats so weird to me in the reptile world. I disagree with dog breeding, but I've never heard of a dog breeder being too busy to answer all questions thrown their way by any one. I can understand walking up and asking for a step by step care guide might be excessive, but.... tbh there's a lot to learn about owning a snake and I wish people would do as much asking as possible before purchasing. If the breeder was truly concerned about homing their snakes in happy homes instead of profit- they should welcome as many questions as possible and if it gets to be too much, to guide them to where they can get that accurate information. Just coming from a perspective snake owner, I know u didn't ask... idk maybe u can change my mind? 🙏😣 (Previous experience is with a snow corn, currently researching hognoses and balls for future purchase.)

I totally agree with everything you're saying and as a small breeder, I personally can answer everyone's questions. These questions aren't usually "how do I care for a snake" - they're more specific questions about that particular animal like size, weight, temperament, and number of meals - often coming from people just dreaming of buying a snake but can't for whatever reason. It's a really common problem with breeders larger than myself. I don't advertise on Morph Market as most other breeders do. But imagine you're even a mid-level breeder and you have 50 snakes advertised. Even if you got one "tire kicker" per snake each day (they usually get more than that), you'll spend a huge part of your day writing emails instead of caring for the animals. Reptile breeders deal with way more animals than a dog or cat breeder and way more customers, meaning tons more "tire kickers"... Again, your points are totally valid and I'm sure most breeders are happy to answer quick husbandry or keeping questions - but unfortunately, the majority of the "tire kicker" questions they spend time on have nothing to do with that.

@@GreenRoomPythons Hahaha, ah icic.. yea I would never ask a breeder about a specific snake's eating habits and details unless I had my rack up and running at home and cash in my pocket. I get how that would waste a breeders time. Well! Ur officially my fav ball python breeder, thanks for being so cool! 🥰👍

See, now you've got me thinking about Snakes On A Plane (which obviously I've never seen because my opinion of snakes was somewhere aligned with Kent's until recently.) When you know what snakes are actually like, ie, defensive not aggressive, do films like that, and Anaconda, etc, become absolutely ridiculous and laughable? Like when I see an actor playing clarinet *really* badly in a film and just laugh at it?

Been looking into a ball python for years and it seems like there’s waaaay too many breeders in the hobby. So many poor animals always become unwanted. Breeders on youtube seem like a huge problem too. Never really see anyone go against breeders.
