Hi, Gamers! Edits & Updates! 1) I misspelled one of the websites. bodoge.hoobby.net is the Japanese version of BGG. It's an incredible resource that you should definitely use and includes reviews and sometimes links to purchase the game! 2) I completely forgot to mention gamemarket.jp which is the website for Game Market itself! I can't believe I forgot to mention this, but it's a fantastic resource (if not THE resource) to see what new doujin games are being released! 3) I apologize for my terrible Japanese pronunciation. 2025 UPDATES Here are some other NA websites you can buy games from: 1) Tricky Imports 2) New Mills Industries 3) Tanuki Games 4) Portland Game Collective

I had a very positive experience using Buyee for the first time last month. Bought Crash Octopus (+ expansion), Persona VS, American Bookshop, and Yura Yura Penguin. Shipping wasn't terrible (around $25) and the game prices were fantastic (yen to USD worked in my favor). They had almost everything I was looking for. If they'd start carrying Oink and Uchibacoya games I wouldn't need any other service. It was a little complicated to get my head around, but I already feel like a pro and could do it again easily. Thanks for inspiring me to give forwarding services a chance (before you even made this video)! Now I just have to figure out how to get the other games you've recommended that I need: Planepita and 12 Rivers.
@CardboardEast

Congrats on your first forwarding service experience! I was incredibly anxious my first time as well. Planepita should be available through booth. 12 Rivers is a Taiwanese game, so I’d recommend going to bgnations’ FB page. Oink games are on Amazon and Suruga. Uchibacoya has their own online shop. Hope that helps! 👍

Hi Jay, you know what? Hanamikoji was a game I never wanted to try, until I watched your review... I absolutely loved it! I now own and played Hanamikoji. So in instincts, I do depend on your game reviews from Asia. Here's a little off topic I'm a japanese wrestling fan too and I have bought through this company White Rabbit Express for my wrestling merchandises. The good thing for this forwarding company it's in English not need for japanese name, and at this point their service have been pretty good. Right now I got a handful of Asian games. The only game I'm still awaiting to be published is Night Market & Gheisha's Road(plus promos).

Thanks, Jay! I have been digging into this process recently and this video really helps explain the process. I think I'll take the plunge. I have heard that some services are not as fast at the ordering process -- which can make them less useful when trying to grab popular Game Market titles that sell out quickly after going on sale. Also, have you looked into ZenMarket? It seems popular with some.
@CardboardEast
@CardboardEast 2 жыл бұрын
I have not heard of ZenMarket. There are quite a few forwarding services. For GM games I typically go through booth/buyee. Usually games will appear on booth before they appear anywhere else. However, some publishers have their own online stores or go through specific platforms like Amazon. If there are others in your group, doing group buys or comparing shipping rates of forest services together would help everyone in the group out. As each forwarding service may provide slightly different rates depending on where you live.

What about more Traditional games like Go Boards and Go Stones? Where could I get those?
@CardboardEast
@CardboardEast Жыл бұрын
This is a great question as I had never thought of Go boards and Go stones when making this video. I bought my Go set in Austin, TX last century. I brought them with me to Taiwan only to discover that they were originally from Taiwan. I was later told by a local player here, that the brand that I had bought made good Go boards and stones; he was surprised that I bought them in the States. In 2023 though, you can find a decent board and set on Amazon. You could also reach out to a Go school in your area/country and see if they recommend any particular brand or if they have good deals.

Thank you for the video. I got an off topic question after watching several of our videos. What convention in Asia is the best one to visit in regards of the board games in your opinion?
@CardboardEast
@CardboardEast 2 жыл бұрын
Ooooh. That's a tough question. The top three would be: Tokyo Game Market Spring in Japan, Asian Board Game Festival in Singapore, and either the Taipei Game Show in Taiwan or the Moonlight Festival in Taiwan. Moonlight has the added benefit of being close time wise to TGM Spring (at least in the past).

Very good video, liked it a lot. (Sound effects were on top of your audio but hey, it's okay). Please explain why a forwarding service needs a JP name??? Are they expecting their customers to be Japanese living abroad and not Westerners? They don't want to serve Westerners? Do you write the name and address in Romaji or do you need Kanji?
@CardboardEast
@CardboardEast 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! That's a good question. It was so long ago, I honestly don't remember why they needed a Japanese name. I thought it strange myself, but I remember using this workaround. (Like seriously what's up with that?) I ctrl+C ctrl+V the Kanji. Some of the Forwarding Services don't have that problem, but after I got tenso working, I didn't really go shopping around that much.

I feel like card games are more popular than board games here. I think it has to do with the overall simplicity, short play-time, and lack of space in apartments/homes. I mostly see games at LOFT, Tokyu Hands, and a couple of specialty shops, but I rarely find an original Japanese game that interests me. I like games such as Gloomhaven, Lost Ruins of Arnak, Spirit Island, and Aeon's End.
@CardboardEast

I do find it interesting that average home table size influences game design. I don’t think a game like Arkham Horror 2nd Edition would ever be possible in Japan 🤣 but it was the game that dictated how big my table should be 😁 I enjoy heavy games (Frosthaven is on its way) but I really appreciate the approachable nature of a lot of Japanese designs & I’ve been really impressed with a lot of the card games I’ve played. 🧐🤔 Perhaps I’ll make a heaviest games from Asia list 🤔
