THIS has helped me a lot! Esp. with my team during timeouts. When I say hit (4) speed they know. "Medium" can be interpreted a lot different by each person.

Incredibly helpful, love the passion in your teaching method. I don't know of any instructors in my area so I'm self teaching myself fundamentals on KZbin and your content is extremely valuable. Thanks, DI!

Great approach and I will work on it. But there is a bit of an unknown factor like spin effect on the cushion. Hitting 2 cushions without spin will eat up approx. 15-25% energy of the cue ball. Whereas running english will increase speed at the cushion and inside english will reduce speed. But overall this approach is a fantastic base to learn speed control. The cushion effect comes with experience

I play with my personally designed cue, the M1A1-XT, 30” butt with radial pin. Came out in 2015 and discontinued in 2023. Has my Bank Rail Angle Calculator and Winning Ball Winning System design on the butt handle. It’s awesome.

But, a one speed on a 7 ft table is slower than on a 9 ft table. Meaning that if you burn into your brain what a, say, one speed feels like on a 9 ft table, that exact speed does not translate to a 7ft table. So this method doesn’t really translate across table sizes as you said. Still its a sound concept and i will apply it to my speed concept rather than just: slow, medium and fast. Thanks for the lesson!

Do a test of a few speeds on any table as part of your warmup and you'll instantly acclimate to that table size. Fact is, quantifying speed allows us to communicate on any table. Every table has it's same Cue Ball Speed Zones. You acclamate to the table. It doesn't accllamate to you. Understand?

i"m a new player and this really hit me nicely about cue ball speed and energy absorption of 2 objects. I can also now calculate my lag distance and win them much more often ! loll. Thanks

This is interesting and I think the general concept of "the fuller you hit, more energy lost by cue ball, harder you need to hit to achieve X position" is useful. I also think gaining a feel for different shot speeds is useful and I like the idea of pre-stroking at/near the speed youll be shooting. But I don't think its practical to be trying to do these types of calculations in a game scenario. Firstly because most people don't get to spend a ton of time practicing on the specific table theyll be playing the game on, whether its league or tournament. So whatever feel for speed you develop will yield different results table to table. Second, because any amount of follow, draw, or sidespin will change the outcome significantly for the same shot speed. Combine this with the pressure of an in game scenario, and I think you will get overwhelmed quickly. Maybe its useful to double check yourself if you're really unsure about shot speed. But there's no way that top level players are thinking about this consciously. Hitting a million balls and developing a feel is more appealing to me personally.

Interesting, I do speed based on numbers too. Not in sections like that but on a smaller scale due to our smaller tables. I use the numbers to help players feel. I do use the diamonds for numbers. I have great speed control. I like the concept that you provide. I will see if it improves my speed or helps when I'm off a bit. Thx so much.

Hi Michael, to the points of your questions, NO, NO, NO, and NO. While other teachers may say whatever they want based on who knows what… The Drill Instructor Way is quantifiably certain. Are there other ways to learn how to control cue ball speed and position control? Yes. Are they quantifiable? Pretty much, No. Pre Stroke Equals Shot Stroke is the single way that I know absolutely works. Unless otherwise restricted, one bridging length, a level cue, predictable cue ball speed, a pre-determined amount of object ball hit, plus any cushions hit will always equate to knowing where the cue ball will finish. Thanks for asking.

Thanks for the sub! My cue is the M1A1- XT Designed by me. But the market in 2015. Retired in 2022. I may design something in the future. My Shaft, Jump, and Break Cues are exceptional. The newest designs will be out within the next couple months. The ZDPT Technology is amazing. Big hit with wood shafts and in carbon fiber now for the past few years. Please wait a bit to learn about the newest designs coming soon. Thanks and Good Bless

Bernard, thanks for your participation. Now, we’re all listening. Teach us your quantifiable and repeatable methodology for cue ball speed and position control? I’ve proved for decades through thousands of players what I’m teaching is quantifiable and repeatable as The Drill Instructor Way. Tell us what you’ve contributed to how many other players so that we can all learn from the Bernard Dover Way? We’re all waiting.

Hey Dominic, do you recommend varying the length of your stroke and not your bridge. So keeping your bridge length just say 12 inches and then adjusting the length of the backstroke to coincide with the shot speed. So for a 3 speed maybe you only bring the cue back a third of the way and for a 9 speed you bring it back all the way.

Wot about if u shot the CB between those speeds? Between 1 and 2 or 2 and 3? Another thing, different tables got different cloth, slower or faster and the rails can be speedy or not... just my 2 cents..

I like your enthusiasm, but think hitting a lot of balls is more interesting and overall a better approach for becoming a good player. I’ve taught pool to teenagers at our senior center billiards room and wouldn’t use this method. I think they would lose interest in learning to play pool.

Those cut fractions don’t go up in equal increments. Why does it go 1/8th ball cut, 1/4 ball cut , and then jump all the way to 1/2 ball?? What about 3/8th and 5/8th? Also.. why aren’t the zones between 1st and 2nd diamond , and 6th and 7th diamond included in your speed quantification? They need speed numbers if you’re playing to these areas surely.

First, thank you for speaking up your thoughts. Ok, you deserve a complete response to your free expression and I'm going to give you one. You'd do well to understand quantifying pool into understandable terminology because pool is all math. So, why not understand the math? Your ignorance proceeds you in a most remarkable way. You don't know, I am one of the fathers of training to instructors to teach and training coaches on how to become a great coach. My place in the pool world is one of the greatest methodology and formula creators and innovators to the world at the pool player level. My intent is not to be insulting. But you cause me to have to respond to you in an authoritative way and mostly to protect players who really want to learn from me. On the other side lie in wait are a handful of ignorant or stupid people. In some circles they'd be called haters and the fact is haters hate. You are completely unqualified to understand what you said but you are intitled to have your opinion and express your view in an acceptable way. Dr. Dominic Manual Esposito, a..k.a., The Drill Instructor for decades has created, innovated, manufactured, distributed, promoted, exhibited, entertained, endorsed and sponsored, and is followed, viewed, and shared by millions of pool players around the world and is here to openly share and to contribute to the pool players around the world who love this sport and the games we play. They call him their instructor and for some, coach. Thanks for your thoughts and for accepting ours with an open mind. If you're not building it up, you're tearing it down.
