Niels, would love to see a vid on the common scratch into side pocket after trying to go 3 rails with outside English (shooting into side pocket when you’re on the wrong side to get to the center table or the other side). It’s such a common scratch that comes up all the time.

This is absolutely one of the most useful videos I’ve seen. I absolutely believe you could turn this into a series, where we pause and anticipate the lines of position and the highest percentage ways to get there before watching and getting better at position theory from one of the best. Keep up the great work Niels!
@dammitZevaАй бұрын
I agree! If only I had known about this concept of playing into the line of position years ago when I was playing in tournaments. I know it would have made a big difference. I lost so many tournaments and matches because I got out of position near the end. Looking back on it, I would bet that I was crossing the line of position when it happened.

Between this and watching/listening to your other BNH videos stressing 'line of position' I think I am begining to get it. That is saying a lot because it will take much practice to quickly identify the best road and then actually make the shot. Great lesson, Thanks so much!

Hi Niels. I spent years playing tournaments as a 'C' player. They tried to raise me up to B level but I just wasn't good enough to compete as a B and they set me back to 'C'. (we didn't have the FPA ranking system in use now that I know of) I'm thinking now that had I known about the concept of shooting 'into the line of position' instead of 'across the line of position' it would have made the difference to moving up to a higher level. I would end up with far too many difficult shots because I got the position wrong. I just discovered your videos and only watched a few so far but I found this one to be the most valuable yet. Thanks Niels! Subscribed

Some really great tips and thinking in this. Growing up and going through high school I played pool everyday to a point that I was told I should go Amateur but never did, got out of playing for awhile because of life and just recently got back into playing again. Always enjoyed playing pool and didn't realize some of my position plays back then could have been a lot easier with the tips you have in this video. I learned the most about pool by just watching people play and seeing what route's they took and then try it myself in practice. Keep up the great work!

I like the advice, and it is good and sound advice. But there is nuance to this that beginners and intermediate players might not pick up. On the first and second shot, if you are stuck on the rail and shot-making is risky (say, you are playing on very tight pockets, imagine snooker pockets and you aren't in stroke), might be better for you to just play the one rail position. If you can stun it, then stun it. The better your shotmaking is, the more able you will be to take the better route. It is important to balance the shotmaking risk and positional risk, or keep it in mind, when making decisions like these. On third shot, this shot works well if you can reliably strike that second rail at a precise point. What if you needed to be on the correct side of the 2 ball, and striking the second rail makes it so that you might cross into the wrong side? In that case, the risk changes and you must sometimes play the position zone without striking the second rail. OR you just get very good and precise at striking a point on that second rail to ensure you stay on the correct side at all times. Of course it takes practice. In the event that you don't need to ensure you land on a certain side of the 2 ball, then you can do what is done in the video. The 4th shot I think the advice can be taken as is. I myself have made the mistake of trying to play the angle perfectly though. I would try to play the follow shot with inside spin such that when I hit the rail, I will go EVEN MORE in line of the 9 ball, rather than go wide of the actual line like you do in the video. Speed is important, of course. I think the inside spin can complicate things because you will be required to aim even thinner than you would want. So you might set the shot up thin and have the cue ball throw the object ball in. But due to swerve and the precise aim required to ensure I hit just past the pocket point, I sometimes scratch, or run the cue ball into the pocket point, and at that point I am definitely not going into the line of the shot. The 5th shot, both shots (the one your opponent chose, and the one you would have done) require practice, knowing where the cue ball will strike. If a player is better with shooting one shot over another, then that's on them, but it is also why they would choose to shoot differently. But this can also be said, that the player needs to work on their flaws so they can make better decisions.

Hi Niels! Great video. I am an experienced player but I have a lot to learn still but I literally started watching the video that Accu-Stats put out a day ago titled “JOHNNY ARCHER vs EFREN REYES - Sands Regency Open XXIII” and noticed the very first rack Johnny broke and ran but crossed the line on every single shot. I struggle with this I think so I am trying to re-wire myself so to speak. Can you offer your thoughts on this? Is this something pool players have not always thought about? I guess I’m curious if it’s feasible most of the time or if it doesn’t apply a lot of the time. How do you approach it in a game/set? Thanks in advance!
@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen9 ай бұрын
Hi Scott, there are many exception to the rule, but in general if coming into the line is available and overlooked, that's where the thinking mistake is made. I also have to cross the line many times without me really wanting to. You will get the hang of it. Most of all on ball in hand shots! Study better players and you will keep learning :) 💪🔥
@scottwallace54289 ай бұрын
I appreciate it. I don’t really think about it but I’m sure I cross more than go into it. I will add it to my pre shot routine. Thanks again!

How do we get from the 2 to the 3 in the first situation? It seems I always end up with a 50 yard line shot on the 3 now matter how I do it.
@johnhoush43669 ай бұрын
Depending on where he lands, he has options. Top right English could follow a similar path back to the 3, going from the short rail, to the long rail, back to the other long rail and in line with the 3. If he landed with a little less angle, he could draw left, 3 rails to the other side of the 3. Going straight up and down isn't as bad with this shot, as a perfect angle isn't as needed given where the 4 is positioned.
@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen9 ай бұрын
From the angle of coming into the 2 ball for position then to the 3 would be high ball with a tip of right . It's a shot from the up & down drill. Go check that one out. Great drill to work on 💪🔥😃
