How To Calculate Slipcover Fabric Yardage

Hi Kim. Love your videos. I have a Craftsy membership and have done you sofa slip cover class and successfully cover a small sofa in natural 12oz bull denim. I’ve just finished measuring a larger sofa I’m going to do. The deck, outside back and inside back measurements are all 84 - 90 inches in width. I’m either going to use 58” 12oz bull denim or 72” 10oz natural canvas. I planned on laying the pieces by height up/down roll or would you recommend doing rail road so I don’t have to piece. If I use the bull denim I will have to make sure the subtle pattern is going the same direction. Thank you.

I think you'll find that this method does account for nap as all pieces are added up (height) wise so everything is mapped out, added up, as if off the roll, even with putting two pieces side by side with narrow pieces. For patterned stuff, you will need to allow more fabric so that checks, stripes, or flowers all appear lined up and this will use more fabric, just like patterned wallpaper. For fabrics with nap, it is crucial to mark the top of each piece so that when sewing, you do not sew one "upside down" and get the nap going thre wrong way.

I’m confused on the cushion boxing measurement. Why do you only add the 7” instead of 80”? Will you piece the 57” with the remainder of the 35” and have a seam in the boxing strip?

Why is the total divided by 36???

A yard is 36 inches long. Fabric is usually determined/cut in yards unless you are making something like a small pillow cover or baby clothes.
