I'm 6' with waning vision. My original bench was 36" high with a plywood top. It worked well as an out-feed table for my table saw. As I am doing more hand work, I replaced the ply with a laminated top, so the bench is now 39" high. The wonderful thing I love about wood projects is if your requirements change, take it apart and build it to what you need. Wood is good. Thanks for a great channel.

Applying the you-can-always-cut-more-off rule, I have built two benches with what felt like the "perfect" height and added 2". Use it, play with it and cut off the bottoms of the legs 1/2" at a time until it's just right. Worked for me, anyway. Now I know for sure where it should be, which is 34" for me.

Only just seen this James, so only 11 months late with the comment....great explanation.....my Grandfather was a ships carpenter and I remember him making a lot of people workbenches for hand tool working....his formula was to stand straight, with your hands dangling loosely by your side and wearing the footwear you would be wearing while working....then he would take a measurement from roughly halfway between your wrist and your elbow.....he said many things you just explained, but his method gave a workbench height that was a best of both worlds for saw cutting and planing and chisel work. It is interesting to see your views and his coincide as they do for me ,as he actually served in the first world war and the second, along with my father, so that kind of gives an idea of the age difference. Great work mate, and again another very informative vid.. thank you.

It's not a workbench, but I have an assembly bench that has a scissors jack inside. With that I can raise and lower it to whatever level I need. I lower it all the way for assembly and then raise it to match my table saw so it is my outfeed. It has 2 extensions that fold down when not in use. Essentially, it is 2 boxes. The bottom box is on casters for rolling around as needed. It has no top, but has a slot in one side to accommodate the scissor lift handle. The other box has no bottom and slides down over the lower box. It is a fairly tight fit and I have slick tape at the corners of the lower box to reduce friction. It is made mostly of 3/4" Baltic birch. Jack screws in the legs of a work bench would create essentially the same effect.

I have a small 10' X 12' shop which has two work benches (2.5' X 6' & 2.5' X 8') inside and one more outside for cutting and sanding on which is also 2.5' X 8' and several saw horses when using my skill saws or planers. The outside bench is adjustable via a pair of small automotive scissors jacks which can raise or lower the bench top to what ever height I need it to be for my project at that moment; the height is 'set' by placing wood beams (1" increments) between the main frame and the bench top and then firmly securing both with heavy duty (recessed) bolts. One thing I found which helps is to stand in front of your bench with your upper arms against your body and then place your forearms at a 15 to 30 degree angle in front of your body which will usually give you a fair idea of what is going to be a comfortable height for most of your projects. Thank you for an excellent tutorial on the various heights a work bench can be for different projects.

I’m 5’ 4” kind of small for a man. So when I was looking for a stand for my Jet lathe. The Jet stand without a lathe attached was the right height for the top of my lathe. I built my own out of 2x6 and 2 x10 fir lumber and added some Rockier push-to-lift casters on it so it was portable. I’ve been using it going on 5 years and is still solid. It’s held together with 1/4” wood dowels and glue with steel Cross Dowels with 5 1/2” Bolts to attach the legs. I found a plan on-line and modified the height and length to satisfy my needs.

I have three work benches and a higher work surface in my shop. Two of the work benches are single sided (drawers on one side), one is double sided with a tool tray in the middle. all three have laminated maple "butcher block" tops. The work surface is a cafeteria serving bench with a 2 inch thick laminated top, steel legs and an open area underneath. The workbench height was determined by the fact that I scored them all from a high school that was shutting down the industrial arts program (where I taught at the time) I may have to think about raising the height as you make some good points!
@melaniewestberg28864 жыл бұрын
-4 Carl (retired wood patternmaker 45 yrs.) Not to badly done, you managed to say all the correct things, just with the emphasis on the parts that may confuse the stupid. You could have just said, "All benches are made short so they can be blocked up." Don't be afraid to do that. Yes, several heights of bench are necessary, many books from the end of the 20th century show shooting boards and devices to hold stock while cutting with a hand saw. As you said, "the important thing is to experiment."
@markp60623 жыл бұрын

You always provide good basic information that no one else gives us. I am 5'-11" and have a bad back which limits my ability to bend over a work bench. Luckily, I was able to buy a used steel commercial duty drafting table for $100 about 1990, the kind you would see by the thousands at engineering companies. It weighs over 200 pounds and cost over $2000 in the 1970s. It is 38" x 60" and has spring loaded height adjustment between 33" and 46". I usually use around 38" but I have sometimes used the full 46" for intricate work. I experimented a lot with the height before I built my other benches at 38". The top has sheet steel surfaces on the top and the bottom so I have not drilled any holes in it, but I can clamp stop boards to it if need be. I also use a B&D bench top Work Mate which adds about 6" of height to my fixed height benches.
@AirwolfCrazy4 жыл бұрын
My current work bench came with the house and was a little short. I was able to add some thickness to the top and get it to the right height. For joinery work I have a bench I sit on. The work bench is then a good height for joinery. When I make a new bench it will not be as long as the current one so, I may have room for a joinery table. Then again I enjoy sitting. As for the tablesaw out feed table, the current bench is lower than the table. I simply lay a cut off sheet of plywood that has a few batons attached and it is the same height as the TS. I then take it off when the TS is not in use.

Great explanation. Yes, we need to play around and find the height that works for us. This morning I was working on the final assembly of a tool chest (ala Gerstner) for my apartment workshop (dining room). A drawer back needed to be planed to take off a 1/16 of an inch. the drawer was at shoulder height. I was exhausted after 3 minutes and had to rest my arms. Later in the day, I had no fatigue using my heavy jack plane at table height. (30 inches).

Okay James, here's a challenge. Design the perfect work bench with a height adjustable feature, possibly a rack and pinion mechanism with electric motors to dial it in for the perfect task oriented height. Sure, probably expensive, but how sweet would it be. Push the button, it's an outfeed table, push again, hand saw height, raise it up for the perfect hand plane height for multiple thicknesses of wood, adjust again for assembly height. There's a lot of smart and creative guys out there who can get this ball rolling.

I read and considered all the height info before building my bench. But a mock-up before the build was not comfortable. I made it to my fathers bench height, about midway between wrist and elbow. Initially felt right but not so much lately. Sawing, planing, chisel work, assembly, router work, no longer feels right. Speaking to dad ‘that’s the height of the benches at work, no chairs needed, it’s too high to sit down .’ I’ve been cutting the beautiful lower portion of the legs off my bench, a little at a time to get it right for me. Cutting up something I’ve handmade and beautiful is emotionally painful, but I’m sure the results will pay off.

Hi James! I just measured my home built workbench. It is 38.5 inches high. It started out at 37 inches. A real, potentially dangerous, incident with a hand held router left a nasty half moon divot in the top when the bit slipped out in the colett while I was trimming a project. Fortunately for me it never escaped completely. However, an ugly and embarasing souvenier resulted. I lived with it for about a year, as I feel that humility is usually a good thing. But this was to extreem for me. I decided to try covering the bench with some 3/4 Baltic Birch plywood. It would never be as hard but certainly more pleasant. It was, however expensive, so I looked around at MDF and other solutions. The I had a brilliant idea why not buy a table top and trim to fit? I found a 1.5 inch thick Birch table top on Amazon at an amazing price. I bought two, for both sides of my Mitre saw station which also had to be adjusted up i.5 inches. I framed them with 3/4 0ak. The outcome just astounded me because it was so beautiful!. The result left a nice tool tray along the wall. It turned out to be not ALL good though. Now I just hate hitting it with a hammer or other such violent tool. I have to cover it when doing finishing work as well. Finally I got up my nerve and drilled Dog holes over both ends of one side, leaving the center undisturbed. The dog holes were located by using a pilot drill and a piece of pegboard. It came out better than a lot of my furniture pieces It looks like one.

@snowwalker99994 жыл бұрын
I prefer tall benches, even for hand planing and assembly. If your handplane is sharp the bottom of it waxed, you shouldn't have any issues using a tall bench. In fact it would be much easier to check the flatness of the piece you're are planing if the bench is taller. I have never been a moxon vise fan. An added heavy item that has to be lifted put on and taken off the bench then stored away on daily basis. Having a moxon vise makes sense if your bench is very low and does not have a good functioning vise. Most woodworkers make a moxon vise because it is just a fun project. There is nothing is wrong with that.

Bench height is really a custom item. Think of the difference of comfortable work height between someone 5' tall and someone 6'6" tall. Some make elaborate scissor lifts which is fine. Another would be to install leg adjustors that would move your bench height to the highest and lowest levels you want like welding tables. If you have a metal lathe then it's not very expensive. Otherwise find a machinist that will make them for you. You could use threaded rod but it wouldn't be heavy duty enough if you have to raise it very much. Made correctly it will be as stable as if the legs were flat on the floor and last a lifetime or more.

@@StumpyNubs hahaha! No, not at all! I was absent-mindedly typing in Afrikaans. The literal translation is, Good shot, Stumpy! Thank you, hear! The general translation is, Good one, Stumpy! Thanks!

I think I know you are a details oriented guy. Perhaps you could check again with your Swedish speaking friends about the pronunciation of the Sjöberg work bench name. As a Swedish speaker I do not recognize what you are saying when you are using the name. I am aware of the fact that you here in the US have to "mispronounce " foreign words the correct way, according to American standards, but things can sound pretty abrasive (80 grit?) to native speaker"s ears : ) Thank you for very high quality, informative KZbin episodes. Onward through the fog.

Linguistic Anglicization is very common, even necessary. Every language has its own form of it, not just English. Swedes themselves adapt words from Russian, Polish, Ukranian, Finnish, Lativan and many other languages as well. I've heard Swedes call me "Yim" instead of Jim and I wasn't offended at all. The company themselves (Sjobergs) markets under the pronunciation English pronunciation I use.

I have 3 different heights in the shop. One being low enough to step up on easily for taller projects.
