🎬 VIDEO - Chase 5/24 Rule Explained
• CHASE 5/24 RULE EXPLAI...
WHAT IS THE CHASE 5/24 RULE? (Chase 5/24 Rule Explained)
Chase will automatically deny a credit card application if you’ve opened 5 or more cards with any bank in the last 24 months that appear on your credit report. This includes closed credit card accounts within the past 24 months.
So say you’ve opened 2 Citi credit cards (like the Citi Custom Cash and the Citi Double Cash), plus 2 American Express credit cards (like the Amex Gold Card and Amex Platinum Card), plus 1 Chase credit card (like the Chase Sapphire Preferred). In total, that’s 5 credit card accounts across all issuers. If you’ve opened all of those in the past 24 months, then you’ll need to wait until your ‘count’ is 4 credit cards or fewer within your current 24-month look-back period.
HOW TO CHECK CHASE 5/24 STATUS
While you can use apps or programs like Credit Karma, Credit Journey by Chase, and others, I’ve found the easiest way is to use the Experian mobile app (with a free Experian account). Simply follow these steps:
1. Sign up for a free Experian account
2. Download the mobile app & log in
3. View all cards from newest to oldest (use the ‘Views’ feature in the top right corner)
4. Count the credit cards you’ve opened in the last 24 months
The Experian app makes it very easy to see your credit cards by year, in order, and with the exact Open Date displayed in 1 scrollable list.
DO BUSINESS CARDS COUNT TOWARDS 5/24?
Almost always no. As long as they do not appear on your personal credit report, then business credit cards will not count towards 5/24. Known exceptions of business credit cards that do report to the personal side include Discover and TD Bank.
ALSO NOTE...
The date you’re ‘officially’ below the Chase 5/24 Rule will likely not be the exact date your card turns 2 years old. Rather, it’s recommended to wait at least until the 1st day of the next month after your card’s 2-year anniversary. That way you allow extra time for your credit report to update. Personally, I like to wait closer to 1 month to ensure that both my credit report and Chase’s system are completely up to date.

Good info. I've seen most of that stuff but never researched what would be the best/easiest/quickest way to figure where you were on 5/24. I look at my most recently opened five and see when that fifth one will drop outside the 24-month window. I KNOW for a fact that I was approved for it on Jan 16, 2021. But looking where you showed us on Ex, it says Jan 17. So that's what PenFed reported to the credit bureaus as the date opened, so that's what I have to go by. I'm planning to wait until Feb 1, 2023 to apply for a CSP, but if I were trying to cut it as close as possible and app'ed on Jan 16, it would have been trouble.

Yeah. That is what I was wondering about towards the end. Should you wait for it to "clear" a month after for the billing cycle or not. But wouldn't it not be the 1st day of the next month but the day after your next billing cycle starts?
@MarkReese
@MarkReese 2 жыл бұрын
Not fully sure. Per an article from The Points Guy, it says, "...to wait until the first day of the 25th month after your fifth account was opened to actually be below the 5/24 limit..." Link to source: thepointsguy.com/guide/how-to-calculate-your-5-24-standing/ So I see what you mean. If you opened your card late in the month (e.g. Aug. 29th), then the "1st day of the 25th month" would be Sep. 01. That may be too little time for Chase's system + your credit report to refresh. For that reason, I simply said "at least until..." in the video. It also gets more complicated in that different credit reports from different bureaus may get updated at different times. So if Chase pulls EX in your area but TU for someone else, that could also affect the 5/24 situation based on if a report hasn't yet shown the new "2 years old" status. You can see why I personally like to wait 3 weeks to 1 month after my 2-year anniversary. The more time to ensure the systems get updated, the better 😁

2 questions ! Does upgrading or downgrading a card ever qualify for a new card holder benefit? For example could I upgrade my freedom basic to a premium card and get the welcome offer? And second part of that question does a downgrade or upgrade count as a new card in the 5/24 rules?! Thx
@MarkReese
@MarkReese 5 ай бұрын
1. No. Upgrading or downgrading does not open a "new account," so you will not receive a "new" cardmember offer. An exception would be if the bank specifically offers you a targeted offer for doing so. 2. No. Upgrading or downgrading does not affect the Chase 5/24 rule. An exception would be if a bank requires closing the old account & opening a new one, which is very rare. The 5/24 Rule only counts "new" card accounts within the past 24 months.

Informative video as always, Mark! Also, one more reason I despise Chase 😏. In my personal experience I found them to be very stern (this comparing to Amex, Citi, Discover, BOA). I agree with the value, but I honestly don’t think it is the best value out there, albeit Chase seem to believe that apparently. I wanted to try, KNOWING this rule and was declined. Apparently the 5/24 rule overshadows paying off 3 cards in full 😂. Again, stern! Thanks for the explanation though!

Hello. I have a technical question about the "5/24" rule. Suppose I have 5 credit card accounts opened and my fifth card was opened December 1, 2020. So, on December 1, 2022, my fifth card will become 2-years old and the hard inquiry associated with that card should expire from my credit report and I should be at "4/24". Okay. Given that information, how long should I wait (or not at all?) before apply for a new Chase credit card? Should I apply December 1st? Or, should I wait until the next day? Give it a week? Or wait until the next billing cycle and check Experian or Credit Karma to be safe? That's your take? I understand there might not be an official statement around this topic, but I'd like to hear your opinion on it. Thanks.
@MarkReese
@MarkReese Жыл бұрын
Hi Ben - I'm not aware of an exact wait period; it may have to do with your own billing cycle & when your own credit report gets updated. For example, even if 12/01 is the exact day your card turns 2 years old, your credit report may not reflect it for another few days or weeks. I personally wait about 1 month.

Hi Emanuel - it was my understanding that Chase may have loosened the 5/24 Rule for the Southwest personal cards, United Explorer, and Amazon Prime Rewards Visa. However, that did not necessarily apply to everyone and it may/may not still be in effect. Generally I stick to the viewpoint that the Chase 5/24 Rule applies to all Chase cards all the time.

What would be your opinion if Chase had recently just made the Freedom Unlimited a 2% card on all other purchases and kept everything else the same on it (SUB, all other earnings etc) but took off the FTF on both the FU and Freedom Flex as well as OG Freedom also if Chase had made the CSP 3x on Groceries rather than online groceries? How would this effect their competition and make people want the Chase cards etc. Also do you think people might not get the CSP if the Freedom Cards had NO FTF. Just curious your thoughts.
