In case anybody is looking for Excel formulas, here are some examples (in my sheet, Score is column D, Course Rating column E, and Slope Rating column F (& Score Differential G) with Row 2 being my oldest round & where I'm tracking Handicap) Score Differential: =(113/F2)*(D2-E2) Drag formula down from G2 to max of G21 depending on how many rounds you have currently. Handicap examples: 4 rounds total: =AVERAGE(SMALL(G2:G5,{1})-1) 5 rounds total: =AVERAGE(SMALL(G2:G6,{1})) 9 rounds total: =AVERAGE(SMALL(G2:G10,{1,2,3})) 20 rounds total: =AVERAGE(SMALL(G2:G21,{1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8})) I'm only at 5 rounds myself, but last 2 above should work (might be able to simply formula in some places). Great video Drew. I have one inquiry though. I've read in a few other posts and watch a couple other videos about the handicap system. According to those you're only calculating the handicap index and not your true handicap. Albeit they're the handicap and handicap index are very close. The Handicap Index (HCI) needs to be plugged into a second equation. From my research the Handicap formula is: HC= (HCI x SR)/113 + (CR-PAR). Where SR, CR and PAR are Slope Rating, Course Rating and Par for that course. Please let me know if something is amiss. Thanks again for the video.

So that 8.3 is the average of all of my score differentials from the past 2 years. So if I didn't pick my lowest 8 scores then my Handicap would be at 8.7 based on the average of every round I've played. But, luckily for us we get to pick our lowest 8 rounds of our most recent 20, and that is what makes me a 1.7 HCP in cell C:42. Thanks for watching!

what's the difference between "adjusted gross score" and "net score"? Example: If I'm a 12 Hcp and I shoot 8 at a Par 4 with Stroke-Index 7, I get one stroke on that hole. So gross score is 8, adjusted gross score is 7 with the net double bogey rule and now I can further subtract 1 for the net score (then being 6?) because of the 1 stroke I gained? Or can't I? But then adjusted gross score would just be the same as net score?

Thanks for the comment Colby! I usually track through 18 birdies app or on scorecard and keep it on a google doc. You can also track through the GHIN app I believe!

Drew, I'm hoping you can help me! We play the same course every week in our league. My average differential on that course is 4.68 (course rating 69 and slope 122). My program calculated my handicap index at 5.7. My question is, if I go play a much harder course (i.e. Muirfield Village, with a rating of 72 and 147 slope), how do I adjust my course handicap to play that course against others?

Hey Jim thanks for comment. You would simply take your index of 5.7 multiply by course slope rating of the new course (147/113) then you would add course rating minus par if there is a difference. In your example you would be adjusted up about 2 strokes to a 7 at Muirfield Village. Hope this helps

When you only have a couple of differentials it will actually subtract from your handicap until you hit close to 20 rounds

The only problem with their system is calculating a +handicap, or under par handicap. Let's say I'm the best golfer on the planet and i shoot a 57 every day at my local course here with a rating of 71.7 and slope of 126. My handicap from the calculation is -13.1. But if i shot that same score of 57 every day at TPC Sawgrass, which is a much harder course with a rating of 73.9 and 148 slope from the blue tees, the number comes out to a -12.9. A worse handicap for the same score at a much tougher course. On the plus side of zero the lower number of 12.9 vs 13.1 is a lower handicap showing that the calculation makes sense for the tougher course, but on the below par side it does not. My question is how the hell do you get an accurate +handicap to account for the more difficult course, and also does the calculation even indicate that you're in fact a -13.1 or + since that's the way you're supposed to write it even though it's under par *headscratch.
