This video was extremely helpful. I was taking my blood pressure wrong with my OMRON BP7100 home unit. My cuff wasn't level with my heart, causing extremely high blood pressure readings. My pulse readings remained accurate. The doctor's office professional blood pressure monitor doesn't require my arm to be in a specific position to read my blood pressure. My pulse at the doctor matched my pulse at home. As an African American man, I am at a higher risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, and I have a family history of high blood pressure and heart disease. This video will help save lives.

I read the OMROM user manual. It clearly stated that cuff microphone must be level with my heart. After a few years, I had bought a "mercury-free digital Sphygmomanometer" + Stethoscope to calibrate my Omron Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor. That was when I found out that the rubber tubing of the Omron was leaking air at the connection inside.and the rubber tubing joints has to be periodically renewed by cutting a little off or the tubing replaced periodically.

Could you just note the difference then adjust the amount or "normalize" it accordingly? That is what I am going to do. She even said she'd rather have it off by ten then have it irregular readings. I wounder if taking it apart, and cleaning it would help? As an engineer I can say it often helps. If you don't have an air compressor you can use canned air.

My question is they say rest your arm at heart level, but there's never a place to put my arm in the doctors office, so you either hold it up which creates tension raising the level or let it hang lower then your heart, which the video says makes it higher. Also they often take it through the cloths, & talk to you while they do it, which doesn't seem to make for an ideal reading. So what do you do?

She did not describe how to calibrate a blood pressure cuff. Comparing relative reading between two uncalibrated machines is not calibration. This is irritating and, for people who follow her advice, potentially dangerous. Edit: I just read some of the other comments. Fortunately, there are people in the world who understand calibration. I recommend that the doctor pull this video before she does harm.

If you have a cheap device and want to calibrate follow these steps: 1- Your device will not have calibration option so you will have to do mental calibration 2- If your device is consistently higher by say 5 numbers than the standard unit, then you substract 5 from the reading and now you have a calibrated result 3- if your device is showing higher and lower readings then it is not reliable. take out the batteries and throw it in the trash. before you give up on your device, make sure the strap spot that has the pressure sensor is positioned correctly and that you have been sitting for 5 minutes and your cuff is at heart level

Yeah, like others have said this video has nothing to do with calibration. She keeps on saying the word calibration when she means to use the phrase (checking accuracy and frequency of accuracy), which is not the same as calibrating as calibration fixes an inaccuracy. I'd also like to point out that doctor's offices are too busy and too uncaring these days to waste time checking your home device. Healthcare in the 21st century is mostly and in and out type of system with the emphasis is strongly put on the "out" side of the procedure. Best thing to do? Just get a new system if you think your current one is not working properly.

What the Dr. said was exactly correct. What she should have added is that if there is a significant difference the unit should be sent back to the manufacturer for proper calibration.
@exgenica
@exgenica 8 жыл бұрын
Should also define what a "Significant" difference is. (e.g. >10 points?, >20 points?, >30 points? etc). Is "significant" different for Systolic vs. Diastolic values? Since Diastolic is the more critical reading in many cases, this seems a reasonable question. (e.g. >30 points is significant for Systolic, but >10 points is significant for Diastolic).
@exgenica
@exgenica 8 жыл бұрын
BEFORE sending "back to the manufacturer for proper calibration:... Compare arm cuffs. They come in different sizes. In many cases, a simple change in arm cuff may be the correct action to take as a cuff that is "too small" WILL cause higher readings. Also check that all fittings are secure and there are no leaks. You may also find that it is FAR cheaper to just buy another unit or part than have an old unit serviced or re-calibrated. A new arm cuff for example, can cost as little as US$15. An entirely new, and possibly more accurate unit with newer and better sensor technology may cost LESS than having the unit serviced. Also, you may find more features...memories to save the last "X" readings are now common and several models can even detect irregular and potentially dangerous heart arrhythmias.

Why mercury column BP machine is accurate and does need any calibration?
@set3777
@set3777 8 ай бұрын
Mercury column BP is based on weight of mercury in a correct diameter tube balancing with pressure. If the tube is not replaced the reading is always accurate as long as just enough mercury is there to give zero reading when pressure is zero. Mercury column BP is NOT affected by temperature. Aneroid BP dial is based on a spring coil which is temperature dependent and needs to be sent for lab calibration and certifications periodically. Electronic BP monitor depend on a pressure to voltage tranducer that may not be linear so some electronics/microprocessors are used to adjust the readings to match the mercury column reading. Home BP monitors usually do not allow the end user to do any calibration. But PROFESSIONAL clinical electronic BP monitors like the Omron 970 CAN be calibrated and/or compared with a mercury column at user clinic anytime.

Honestly I think the time with taking blood pressure needs to start at the dr. office. I can attest that 99% of people I see taking pressure do it wrong and its shocking. I was just at the doctors office for blood pressure and the nurse literally had my arm straight down, spoke with me entire time, never allowed me a second to rest, etc. Then I get 140/90 and lectured how my pressure is very high. Prior doctor visit nurse took pressure over my coat, time before that I walked 5 min to area then immediately took pressure. On and on its a joke, doctors and nurses are the ones lecturing us on pressure and drugging us up based off of ignorance, its so bad I feel doctors need to be barred from practice if they cannot do this correctly, its as basic as it gets.

How do you calibrate a blood pressure cuff? There is nothing on it to calibrate. Just a rubber bladder that should close off the length a brachial artery for the width of bladder and make sure it covers at least 80% of the arm's circumference. So it's just the matter of getting the right cuff size. I always use an aneroid sphygmomanometer.

Unfortunately this nice person didn't explain it correctly, and apparently didn't understand fully and so couldn't explain it properly. As others have pointed out- most home units cannot be calibrated.

Please excuse me to not agree. Measure the same phenomena and compare results means a gross error introduced by many variables. If you have a calibrated one and a "T" connection piece you can made a simple arrangement to compare indicators with reduced errors. Connect a "T" side to the UTD; connect the other "T" side to the calibrated device on passive mode (only indicator); connect the "T" piece bottom port to arm cuff; start the DUT on usual way and compare both measures.
@exgenica
@exgenica 8 жыл бұрын
With these automated devices, I don't see a way to do this. The points at which the Systolic and Diastolic values are obtained are ontrolled by the DUT's internal microprocessor, and I have never seen nor can I find a "passive" device to which those measurement points can be communicated/triggered.

The doctor's advice is correct in the sense that to calibrate means to determine the accuracy of a measuring instrument, but the other meaning is to set the device so that the measurements taken with it are accurate. Most home BP monitors can not be easily calibrated by the end user. Hence one merely needs to determine how high or low it reads, as long as its readings are regular. If its deviations vary then it is useless. If my doctor's office checks it and determines that it is consistently up X over an accurate reading, I record the monitor reading less X.

Basically.... take your unit to the doctor's office and compare your readings to his readings. So long as your numbers are consistent against his numbers (yours might be a bit higher for instance, but consistently higher), it's better to be getting consistent readings at BOTH locations to prove your machines are working. If your BP then goes haywire, you will be sure that your machine is working and to get to medical care, where it can be confirmed on the doctor's machine that your bp went haywire.
