REC 709, G2.4, Luminance as you like it, black point start with absolute and if that does not work well start to scale it up at 0.3 and perhaps 0.5 and you should be good to go

Art, another excellent tutorial. Excited to start using PMU. But one short coming straight away was no ability of custom naming Calibration slots yet again, unless I have missed that functionality or you didn't go over that. It is just a waste of time needing to memorize or look up what calibration type assigned I have assigned to each user Calibration slot. For example, I personally need a Rec709, Photography for print, Photography for web. My hope is my observation is wrong and BenQ has finally added this to the software, but if they have not, perhaps you could bend their ear. Thank you!

Great video as usual. Quick question, would you calibrate differently (i.e., temperature) if you know you'll be printing your images? I have read that using 5000K-5500K if printing is better that 6500K. I have calibration 1 at 5000K/70 candelas and calibration 2 at 6500K 90 candelas. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

If you print and use a pro viewing lighting or light that is calibrated to 5000 or 5500K then I would recommend that you start out with the soft proof preset in PMU. The luminance there is set to 160 nit but that number is a good starting point and it is one that makes sense considering fact that our eyes see less color and brightness at lower - warmer color temp. So start with the preset and adjust the luminance from there. You can always use D65 for print as well, just calibrate it as a lower nits. Personally I am fine with D65 but you can always experiment.

Thank you for producing very informative videos on this subject. I have looked at various monitors and have settled on the Benq SW270c and will also purchase either a Calibrite Pro or Plus device based on the help you have provided via your videos. Unfortunately, Calibrite have brought out new HL versions of these devices with updated software and my query is will the new calibration devices work with Palette Master Ultimate and the Benq SW270c monitor. I have messaged Benq's Technical Dept via their website and there response was they don't know as the new devices have not been assessed yet. Many thanks

I have an SW 271C and use a Macbook M1. For PME, you recommended specific settings (like Panel native, relative black, matrix, D65 White Point, luminance values). Are you now recommending the default settings in PMU? Or would you recommend that same as you did with PME? Thank you.

I would still use native in PMU. From my test, Absolute black works well in PMU. I would give that a try!

Im in the process of calibrating my SW270C and SW240 using a Macbook pro M1, Calibirite Display Pro HL, Palette Master Ultimate with display port cables. I want both display to match, but after running several calibration and having a successful report saying the calibration has passed, the displays look different. I believe the SW270 is accurate, and the SW240 to be off. Any advice you can share to get them to match? Thanks

thanks for this great tutorial!!! when i calibrate the display in panel native gammut, which gamma setting do you recommend (i tried Standard Gamma and extended Gamma measurement) and how can i edit the black point? for now only absolute black is the only option (not 0,2 nit what you recommend in other tutorials)... thx!!!

Standard 2.2 is fine, you can use enhance gamma correct too. For black point, click on edit target, at the very bottom of the list there's an option for black point, in the drop down list choose custom and this is where you can type in a value. So far PMU has been rather good so I just set mine to absolute black. However, I do encourage you to experiment.

well the average delta e dropped from around 1 in pme to 0,4-0,5 in pmu and delta e max from 2-3 (pme) to around 1 (pmu) in all 3 settings (80cd, 120cd and max brightness, panel native color gammut and absolute black set as black point). which is really good i think!!! i'll try blackpoint of 0.2 next time i calibrate the monitor. thx for the help and your great work!!!

Is the ICCsync function with the hot puck calibration 1,2,3 is supposed to work on Mac ? On my side I went for a fresh calibration with PMU but I still need to manually select the correct color profile in Mac OS setting for each calibration I created when I switch calibration mode.

It does work on Mac. Did you set the 1,2 and 3 key on the puck to calibration 1, 2, and 3. If so and PMU runs in the background it will work.

Great video, as always. At least from my experience, PMU is beta status software with many issues (macOS 13.3, Studio Ultra M1, two SW321C). I've read through the manual front-to-back. Just a few issues. First - if for some reason PMU freezes or gets stuck, the monitor remains in dimmed mode of the monitor selection even after PMU is exited or killed. The only way is to disconnect the monitor from power (pull the cable, on/off button not responsive). Second - after successful manual selection of the monitors, the calibration run for the first monitor could be completed successfully, but never for the second monitor. For every calibration run, only a single monitor can be connected. Third - depending on the monitor, 1 to 3 out of 4 calibration runs become stuck at calibration step 18 of 18 (killed after >1h). Fourth - in practice, the calibration of two monitors for 3 color spaces each (RGB, sRGB, DCI P3) takes a full work day. If you're lucky ! BenQ offers great hardware, but the calibration software has always posed too many issues. Which makes for an ambivalent experience, at least for me.

1. That happens when you program does not exit but rather killed / forced quit. It takes control of every aspect of the display, hence the power disconnect. 2. I have tested this successfully but I'll look at this again. There are some Mac side display recognition that happens. 3. Yes it should not take that long, hence the kill, which I understand leads to number 1. 4. It takes times but not the whole day, I have ran too many calibration on these to count. But I do see your point number 3. The main question here, is this a new Mac and setup as brand new or system migrated and /or restore from a Time Machine back up? I do hear you and in my testing and communication with BenQ, many of these issues that you speak of is largely related to Mac OS and the constant architecture changes. either way I'll share this with BenQ

Thanks a lot for your response, Art. The Studio Ultra was set up from scratch with macOS 12 in September 2022 and has received all updates to the current macOS 13.4.1 (c). No system migration or restoration from Time Machine back up. In order to make sure that none of the issues are related to hubs or other USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 devices, I disconnected them all. For the final tests, just the two or a single SW321C monitor/s were connected directly to the Apple Studio. For the time being, I went back to PME v1.3.19 which works well for my entire setup (with all devices incl. hubs connected). However, I very much look forward to a more stable version of PMU with its additional functionality - especially the ICC setting for both the monitor and macOS. Thank you so much for all your highly informative, excellent videos on youtube - on BenQ products, computers (Apple especially), software (e.g. Topaz), etc. !

As always, another fantastic video, Art! I see PMU suggests a USB-C connection in addition to DisplayPort. What is your take on that? Have you calibrated monitors with USB-C connection? Will it provide and advantage or result in disadvantage, or will it give equal results as with DP? Thank you.

Thank you. They are the same with more data being able to carry through over a smaller physical connection. USB C Technically uses Display Port Type Signal Overlay. So connection hierarchy goes, USB C, Display Port, HDMI, Legacy connectors.

If you are running Ventura 13.4.1 my advice is be very careful installing and running Pallette Master Pro. I have just got off the phone with Apple technical help and after 3 hours they managed to get my Studio M2 back working. To cut a long story short I installed the latest version of Pallette Master and calibrated my SW271C with no issues. Used the computer for an hour and then sent it to sleep while I went off and did a few other things. Two hours later I came back and woke the Mac back up and was welcomed by a red screen and all apps giving crash reports. The Mac and monitor worked fine over HDMI but as soon as I plugged in the USB-C I got a red screen and crashes. Initially I thought I had a HW issues but Apple ran remote diagnostics and everything was fine. After he went digging and systematically removed Pallette Master and all the profiles it had added to the Mac thankfully it is now working. There must be a compatibility issue with Benq software and latest version of Mac OS. So be careful! I will contact Benq and let them know of my issues and hope they can fix the software. PS Great tutorial really appreciate it keep up the great videos

PMU will only work with the current SW for previous gen you would continue to use PME. And yes you can keep both software.

Great video and content as always. Can you please help me understand the reminder-function of PMU when it is time to make a new profile. It only seem to be a short notification badge in MacOS and not a constant status. Notifications in MacOS often disappear automatically after a few seconds making it impossible to manually check whether the calibration is OK or if it need to be recalibrated. In i1Profiler they change the color of the icon and that is something a user can see whenever. Besides the unclear way to see the status it also seem that this information not being synced to the three calibration slots. It is not always all three calibration-slots are recalibrated at the same time, so changing between them and having PMU change the OS to it's corresponding icc-profile should make a new analyze and information if recalibration is needed of that particular calibration-profile. And finally, there is a setting in the SW-display where I can change Cal.Reminder On/Off, so it seems like the hardware could make this reminder and not the OS, but changing this make no difference. All this should be a perfect topic for a separate video 🙂

I recently found your channel as I'm planning on purchasing the newly announced SW monitor. You have a lot of super informative videos that dive deep into calibration! But I am a newb when it comes to this. I currently use an Spyder sensor with my external monitor. What would be the main difference between using the Data Color program vs. the BenQ PMU? Will I get the same results? If I use the Data Color software, can I still save the profiles to the control puck? Lastly, what benefits does the black and white mode on the monitor provide for photo editing when color images can be converted to bw in Lightroom?

I can chip in on the data color/PMU question. If you purchase the latest SW monitor, you’ll get a much better calibration using the BenQ software as it will be true hardware calibration, in fact if you don’t use PMU, you won’t be getting 100% from your nice new monitor. Sadly, you might need to purchase a new calibration device as well, Calibrite’s Display Pro is pretty much the standard. See if you can get a deal on one when purchasing your monitor, companies in my Country often do a deal and discount around $50 off the price of a calibrator when purchased with a new monitor. Seeing as you’re new to monitor calibration (as we all were), your life is going to be made a whole lot easier with a SW monitor and the new PMU software, all you need to do us connect the monitor via USB-C, watch a couple of Art’s amazing videos and you’ll be good to go.

And their newest Spyder X2 is really new that is not supported as of now, but will in the future.

@@tofulosophy ​​⁠ Although you can turn your monitor into black and white mode, it won’t actually alter the files on your computer, only how you view them. It’s my limited understanding that whilst in b&w mode, you can work more accuratly on b&w images as it displays more of a b&w tonal range, for the vast majority of people, if you want to convert and work on black and white images in lightroom/photoshop, you should be fine with the monitor in regular colour mode.

1. USC - C is always preferred. No truncated signal. 2. Could be that an HDMI is used and if so you'll need to use the USB up-link cable as well. 3. Spyder X will work Palette Master Ultimate to calibrate SW272Q It can calibrate your laptop display but you won't be able to get the full gamut from it. If you are looking for a new / upgrade to your device, my recommendation is Calibrite Display Pro HL or Display Plus HL. For a whole bunch of engineering and color reasons.

BenQ_SW_AdobeRGB is an approximate display profile that is generated from BenQ. It Is a reference profile and should not be used for display. Best to run the calibration with Palette Master Ultimate and disregard both of these.

Great Video as always. On Osx with PMU, i store 2 calibration on the 2 SW slots. When I recall calibration 2 for example on the display, Osx changes automaticaly the calibration icc profile corresponding to calibration 2 slot. for the rec 709 default calibration, PMU created an icc profile BenQ_SW_Rec709.icc. Osx Activates it when I choose rec709 on the display. PME did not have this behavior. So my question is: with PME when we change active calibration slot on the creen, should we change icc profile of the screen in Osx ? If yes, And i choose a native profile of the creen (rec 709 for example) , which icc profile must we select on Osx?

Short answer is yes, you should change the Icc when color mode on the display change. For clarification REC 709, sRGB, Adobe RGB, etc on the display are factory pre calibrated color mode and not native profile. Now with that said if you choose REC 709 using the BenQ_SW_Rec709.icc that is included with the installation is not a bad idea.

I got it to work...finally. I redownloaded ccStudio and installed the XRD driver again. That did the trick. And yes...the Colormunki Photo does indeed work with PMU, despite BenQ telling me it wasn't compatible. Art is Right!

Hiya. I have a question about login. I've had SW240 for several years and have used previous iteration of PME, but because BenQ account was never required, I never made an account. Now that PMU asks to login if I want to keep using it, but for the life of me, I can't find a way to make an account and log in. Login via Google says "Unable to log in. It looks like something is wrong; please try again" without any success. How do I go about this? Thanks in advance.

I have done the login and it works just fine. You can always use it for 30 days without sign in. Also I found that when you get the unable to login, if you dismissed that dialog sometime it would then say that you are logged in.

I have a SW321c - I thought you could assign the three calibration slots chosen at the beginning of the PMU software to the "puck" buttons 1, 2 or 3. Is this software accurate on Sonoma? I tried using it (instead of the default calibrite software) and the color cast is very green and doesn't seem at all accurate. I have two SW321C's and the calibration seems way off between the two. I also can't seem to calibrate at all with HDMI because it won't recognize the HDMI connected display, but my MacBook Pro doesn't have enough Thunderbolt display ports so I have to use USB-C on one monitor and HDMI on the other, but I never had any variation between screens with the Calibrite software. It seems od that I'd have to calibrate with a USB-C cable and then use the HDMI after?

Lots of issues on your end there. This should be approved one at a time. About your display not matching you can use PME Display Clone feature kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGa4hISLhtCSiKM As far as accurate, they are. Green color is from the casting on the LCD panel itself, most likely. Calibrite software only does software calibration, but if you are happy using that just use that. I don't usually recommend using that because it is like buying a Ferrari to drive 10 mph in first gear all the time.

Or what other displays or references are you using to determined relative familiarity of accuracy? "and it doesn't recognize the HDMI connected monitor" It would seems the HDMI works but you can't use PMU to calibrate, are you using a USB Uplink cable on the monitor that you are using HDMI? Yeah a lot of that variation is coming from HDMI vs USBC which runs on full RGB range 444 with display port overlay signal. HDMI may times have compress output range aka limited RGB to 16-235 and chroma subsampling down to 422 or 420. I would encourage you to find a way to use USB C on both. Perhaps a thunderbolt dock. "So I can't even calibrate the second monitor at all" That is the reason for the variation. To continue this diagnostic, I would advise that you dm me.

Wondering if anything was figured out here?!? I also tried running PME, and it validated OK. Hi Art - HELP!! Running Mac Studio (Ventura 13.5.2) with BenQ 271C, Palette Master Ultimate with Datacolor Spyder X, I currently calibrate my monitor monthly. After the latest calibration when my Mac goes to sleep (when I am away fromthe machine) , on 'waking' my screen is Red! and all the toobar icons are grey! The only work-a-round I have found is to reboot my machine. I cannot use the 'apple' icon when the screen is 'Red' as the upper toolbar is flickering! The screen also flickers? This has only started since the last calibration. Contact with Apple - They suggest it is software related ?? Is this an issue with Palette Master? Any thoughts on the way forward with this? Any advice would be appreciated

Here are the steps to resolve the issue. 1. Unplug the USB-C cable 2. Copy /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.displays.plist to a different folder for backup, this can be your desktop *Note This is main library folder on your Mac, not the one hidden inside your user folder. This is a system auto generated file, so once you delete it, macOS will generate another one automatically. 3. Delete com.apple.windowserver.displays.plist in Preferences 4. Restart the mac 5. Reconnect the USB-C cable to the monitor

Just some information about my new Benq monitor SW321C. It worked perfectly for a week until I calibrated it using their new Palette Master Ultimate software. The calibration went well using a color checker display pro and passed I printed one photo using EPL on Epson P900 which went well. When I put another photo on EPL the EPL screen was half green vertically blocking half the photo. I can’t remember what I did next but the whole screen went red with a pop up saying PMU unexpectedly failed ie crashed. The monitor was dead even after factory re-set which was suggested by Benq. Benq are now sending a replacement monitor and have told me not to use PMU but to use PME while their engineers look at the problem. Im using a Mac mini computer not the M1 version. I am now using my 10 year old 24 inch Eizo with no problems. It just seems tiny. Plese see attached photo of red screen. Regards Mike

Hi Mike, thank you for the information on this. It is strange that this happens, I have calibrated numerous SW displays including SW321C using all variants of Apple Silicon and Mac and did over 50 calibration - so far so good. This could simply be a manufacturing or component defect and not necessary related to PMU. Personally I would say if you feel adventurous I would give PMU another try. However, if you don't want to do that I understand. What I can tell you is that PMU is much more thoroughly tested than software released from BenQ in the past. I'll share this case with my contact as well.

Reading this further, I'm not sure how this may be or not be related to EPL. This is interesting. One thing that you can try to do as well if you want to give PMU another try is to calibrate with PMU and then once you are done. Go to the menu bar and Quit PMU that is running in the background. Before you do anything else with the display and computer.

You are look at this the incorrect way, SW2700PT should be the primary and on the Mac and it should fall where they may. Not the other way around, Part of this is the color gamut difference and matte vs glossy display. If you have a late model you can try to calibrate in P3 gamut

I use a Mac with HDMI, why isn't HDMI supported? After 3 tests with the new version, I always had failed results in all RGB colors and part of the grey - delta E was up to 17. The old version passed without error with delta E 1.47. 🤔

This causes a lot of arguments but people will say that you can’t use HDMI when it comes to professional monitors as it can’t carry enough of the bandwith ‘signal’, so to speak. I can only guess that’s why you are getting error messages, but I’m sure Art will help when he reads your comment. Some people swear that you can’t use HDMI, where as others say that you can, it may not help, but make sure that your HDMI cable is the latest 2.1 standard. I run a SW240 on a silicon Mac Mini and I connect using a USB-C to Display Port cable I purchased on Amazon along with a USB cable also connected. In theory, I only need the USB cable when calibrating, but I leave it connected all the time.

So the thing is this, that comment need to come with a big caveat. Can you use HDMI, yes, however, with Pro Hardware Calibrated display, it is one of those situation where you would have to run a calibration, and if it passes you are good, if it does not, like in you situation, it generally stems from 2 possible issues, one your HDMI is truncating the signal output instead of outputting 0-255 it is outputting 16-235, this would cause the failure, not much by way of fixing this on Mac. The other is on Mac depending on the resolution scaling, some of them are outputting YUV signal instead of full RGB signal, you can test this by changing the resolution on your Mac. I would give that a go first, and if that does not solve the issue, I would go with a USB C to C or USB C to Display Port.

@@ArtIsRight With the USB-C cable, the calibration was completed with a max delta E of 0.69. The Element version with the HDMI cable has no problem, but the Ultimate does. This is a Mac Studio with SW321C and I am a bit surprised, I will still try another HDMI cable.

This is a bug in MacOS and it has to do with graphic out. It effect all "M" series Mac. The work around for this right now is to set the gamma to sRGB. Not this is only the gamma curve and not the color gamut.

@@jamesobrien9045 With PMU the only device from DataColor, the company who makes Spyder, is the Spyder X which is the device that came after Spyder 5. There's a new device at this point the Spyder X2 but that device is really new and not compatible as of now. I generally recommend Calibrite devices over Spyder for various engineering reason and with the new Spyder X2, they are priced at above Calibrite devices.

System setting crash could relate to PMU or not, most of the time I found that stems from an un resolved bug in Mac OS that is not necessary related to PMU. Display turns red is an issue where the LUT cannot be written to completely. I need more info to solve issue. Mac system, desktop, laptop, SoC (Chip) gen, Os Version, cable used to link Mac and display, calibrator device used. This would be a good start of issue isolation.

Display turning red, can be fixed by changing to one of the factory color mode, it is doing that because the communication between the display and computer got cut off. It is not necessary an unusual problem, it does happen occasionally with PME as well. You mean the number of patches - because this is a new baseline algorithm that BenQ has developed, that is not longer needed.

Either way, as state the number of patches, which has nothing to do with the color gamut is no longer selectable, that is because this calibration is done on a new adaptive model with a baseline, something that was not done before. Hence the change. You are talking about Adobe RGB, are you referring to using Panel Native, if so this option is still there kzbin.infoJzd-AZx7nGo

@@ArtIsRight I couldn’t have more to say how great you are and I was never used to Monitor with hardware Calibration but now I bought Benq SW270c 2k instead of 4K due to budget Factor. I really appreciated your kindness and gorgeous help. I need more help is I calibrate Monitor white is D65, Luminance is 120, black gamma is Absolutely Zero for Daily use like Website, social media, client works and I believe I did right things for general use and I separately calibrated for print in different custom 1. Sometimes my raw photos look so less contrast, saturate and I believe what monitor see that’s real. Am I right? Correct me if I’m mistake. HDR features comes with Monitors doesn’t show active and is it because I used USB-C and any advice? - what is your knowledge of best Luminance Number Black gamma or gamut for general use? - what Colour and exposure or Luminance I see photos in Calibrated Monitor and I believe I see same in IPhone, iPad, website and other devices after export in Color Space sRGB? Having issue with OSX Sonoma not updating icc profile after changing it on the BenQSW270C. Funny thing is it works sometimes but then just stops. Anyone seen this issue ?

Tried both v2 and v4 in Palette Ultimate software. The issue is for both BenQ pre-config icc profiels as well as for the calibrations done by myself. Using USBC to USBC on BenQ SW270C. Will try downloading BenQ Display pilot and see if there is any difference. @@ArtIsRight

@@ArtIsRight Hi, i have tried some thing if it might be of interest. I tried to change permission on the folder ColorSynd in Libraries. Did work first but after restart of computer not working any more. Did a new calibration and closed the PMU, checked in Apple Colorsync-tool and noticed all calibrations made by PMU get an error "MD5 checksum is incorrect". I repair it (Not sure if this is critical or not). But I can for sure say one thing. If it works and I reboot my computer it stops working. PMU is running in the background, that's confirmed. But if I close that process and restart PMU and then select "Exit" in the software so it goes back to working in the background it works again.

@@ArtIsRight Seems to be a combination if screen is set to wake up via USB and if PMU is set to open or run in background at start. Emailed BenQ all my tests. But you're the BenQ ObiOne so hope you find the bug =) Thx for great content !

right now it can't be opened because of security issues, apple cannot check it for malicious software. the software needs to be updated

It does not need to be updated, Right click on the app and click on open, A dialog will pop up and then click on open again from there the app will run.

@@ArtIsRight I did that - software crashed part way through the calibration, completely corrupted my M1 mac on Monterey - would not connect to another monitor without crashing apps, turning display to monochrome. Had to completely rebuild my Mac from a clean install. Not happy!

@@ArtIsRight Affordability is not an issue - it's costs as much as an XDR display while you get so much more. The real issue is with the comfort and eye-strain. Unless they solve vergence-accommodation conflict, there might be an issue. However, seeing and image blown up to 100ft seems like a dream
