99.999 percent of people who viewed this video and applied this method have had perfect results! the video itself shows documented proof that this method works and surprisingly still there are trolls who comment that it is all wrong. how can a video recording showing it actually works and have all these people who viewed it, try it and have 99.999% success rate and be wrong? I get emails everyday from people all around the world who had success with this method. I will never understand youtube trolls who insist on trying to undermine a good thing like youtube where folks help other folks. it's quite sad.

Personal comment. I know once in my life I would have felt aggravated by the slow delivery of your voice, but times change and I've grown to appreciate it today. When one is trying to learn something...what's the rush? I've learned to slow down and take it easy if I'm going to learn, and learning is what's important. So thank you friend, you explained that really well.

Dave...an excellent demonstration for a "down-n-dirty" way to get the job done. One important note. Remember that depth of field falls 1/3 in front & 2/3 behind critical focus. Don't look to balance the falloff evenly in front and behind. This is a mathematical constant for all lenses, all f stops and all focal lengths.
@daveknowshow10 жыл бұрын
1/3 and 2/3 is not always the case. you can check that by using the online depth of field calculator. near limits and far limits change with relation to subject to camera distance, aperture and so on. here is an example of a near 1/2 and 1/2. lens set at 55mm aperture of f-1.0 Subject distance 8 ft Depth of field Near limit 7.88 ft Far limit 8.12 ft Total 0.24 ft In front of subject 0.12 ft (49%) Behind subject 0.12 ft (51%) Hyperfocal distance 522.5 ft Circle of confusion 0.019 mm

So... I have one tutorial that says have the lens at max aperture for this process and another that says it has to be at maximum focal length, which decreases the aperture. It also states that for this calibration to be right, you have to be a minimum of 50 times your focal length distant from the subject. I notice you're indoors with a 70-200mm and don't change your distance from the subject. I'm calibrating a 100-400mm to a 7D (don't know because it's second hand but new in box, whether or not it has this firmware update. It was manufactured in 2012, so I'm assuming it does). It's raining, of course, (I'm in Seattle), and I would rather not try to go outside. I really like what you're doing here with the Square... very smart. I'm just conflicted about whether or not to do it your way, or the book's way. All I know is autofocus isn't working right and my pics are all fuzzy... but not everywhere... just on my subject... so I eliminated everything else... body mechanics, shake, settings. It's clear I need to do this. HELP MR WIZARD!
@daveknowshow8 жыл бұрын
+synapsecracklepop2 sorry for the delay. I would suggest doing this at a longer distance that allows a quality manual focus at both 100 and 400mm that shows the numbers and lines on the framing square used filling the image frame as much as possible. then switch to auto focus and calibrate. then test the results at various distances. I use a wide aperture 2.8 to render a thin depth of field at 100 as well as 400 with in reason when doing the calibration. I will say that you may get best results calibrating from further away since most of what you will be shooting will be further away. I'm assuming you will be shooting birds and such. keep in mind birds flying at you or away from you are extremely difficult to capture tack sharp no matter how well your auto focus responds. auto focus is a great addition to shooting photography that is moving. if your shooting still images manual focus is your friend and will deliver far better results if you have good eyes and a steady hand or tripod. most everyone that has used my method has had great results. the only ones who seem to complain are the ones who spent to much money on a high dollar calibration device or they sell those high dollar devices and don't like my simple way to do the same thing at less cost. I hope you have great luck with this fix. let me know if you have more questions.

I found this information very useful! I've had issues with soft focus on a couple of my lens and this helped fix it. I did find this video hard to follow during some portions because of the extra time for unnecessary steps. If the focus had been off at 70mm, would you make an adjustment there also? Or, would you average? Or....just leave it alone? I noticed on another video where there was a choice for Wide and Telephoto settings, but I'm sure that the camera involved was not a 7D. Thanks in advance.
@daveknowshow6 жыл бұрын
generally you set and check at all focal lengths adjust as needed. if nothing moves camera stays in the same place, point of focus stays the same distance then they should be with in tolerance. if they are still far off from each other send it in for factory cleaning and adjusting because something is seriously wrong. with that said keep in mind that we are doing this to calibrate " auto focus " and auto focus will never render the most optimal artistic focus as manual focus will. when and if you have time use manual focus. additionally if you know you use a specific lense for example the 70 to 200 2.8 to shoot portraits at 85mm from a distance of 20 feet away from the subject then you can calibrate for those setting. however that is beyond the scope of this tutorial and is a practice used by seasoned photographers who are aware of the risk and have a keen eye to be on the look out for errors as the shoot is progressing. in doing such a set up a photographer may set a lense to bias a forward focus when pointed at the eye closes to the camera or vice versa depending on what they wanted full in focus. " from the closest eye to the camera and infront of that eye or from the closest eye to the camera and behind that eye. keeping the eye tack sharp and allowing the softing to bias one way or another. again this is best done using manual focus in controlled settings. I hope I did not get to far into this topic as it can be very broad in scope of what acceptable focus bias is and how best its used and when. thank you for your great question!

Called and was told that they hardly hear of this issue, and wanted me to send it in for adjustments (at $200 bucks). Even though I see tons of posts about it. Anyway, major issues with focus since, and after trying your way, feel tons better. I've tried the "remove battery"/hard reset options, and no results. Just went through and adjusted ALL of my lenses (though I'm more concerned that it took a +25-20 to get them all right.) That can't be good, but it'll work until I find someone that will take a look at my camera...

I feel strongly this will help fine tune your focus issues that come about due to extreme front / rear bias focusing. keep in mind auto focus is best used for situations where manual focus is not practical. manual focus is the very best and most accurate focus with the most control. when ever possible for best results you should be using manual focus.

Dave, I watched this video about a year or so ago. I found it quite interesting BUT did not try it out. I am having major focus issues with my 18-135mm lens and my 100-600mm lens. I may have caused the problem but it is driving me crazy. Actually stopped shooting for awhile. I am currently on vacation and have started to use manual focus. I bought a docking station (I think that is what it is called) tried to calibrate my 600mm lens but it was too complicated to figure out. Guess I am getting to old. Question is, can I place the square/yard stick in one place and use it for all my longer focal length lenses? I have a 80-300mm also. I really need to get this fixed. I hate the out of focus shots.
@daveknowshow7 жыл бұрын
yes it works with all focal lengths. make sure your diopter adjustment is set correctly. there should be an adjustment knob beside the eye piece when you adjust it for our old eye sight do not look at the image instead look through the lens at the reading at the bottom iso, shutter speed, aperture, and exposure meter. make sure you adjust the diopter so those readings are in focus first. then calibrate your lens for sharp focus.
@charlierussom74397 жыл бұрын

I've been doing micro adjustments for some years now somewhat like this and it works perfect! All my lenses are tact sharp right where I focus. I use a book and a tape measure on about a 45 degree angle next to it and dial things in and presto! done deal!!!!!! (I don't use live veiw though but always the view finder in oneshot with the center focusing box).....just my way, but it works for me.... I think you can get a better focus if the shutter was at 250. There is hand shake when you hit the shutter button. I am saving this video o my favorite very very helpful. But In a bright room with some strong sunlight you can use ISO 100 and us shutter speed 250 or higher. Freeze any motion... But I do think you nailed this on the head and I will try it. Thank you
@daveknowshow9 жыл бұрын
George Torres if your focus issue is related to camera shake then your correct higher shutter speeds will help fix that. this is for when your using all the methods to insure no camera shake and the lens to camera calibration is out of calibration and causing the focus issue. this will fix that issue. this will not fix shaky hand issues, ultra slow shutter speed issues, or subject moving issues. thanks for watching and commenting. :)

I have a high end 35mm contax camera with Carl zeiss glass that I bought new, and barely used it. Paid big money for it, then they came out with digital. Makes one hell of a nice paperweight. Not sure what to do with it. Maybe it'll be worth money some day. But the road to someday leads to the town of nowhere.

that is nice glass, VERY nice! same glass they are using with the new sony cameras. believe it or not this is my most popular video of all the video I have ever made.

dumb question but I have a 7DII and wondering if you go to the left or right for back focusing lens
@davidharvey40593 жыл бұрын
Minus microadjust moves the plane of focus back and vice versa, so if your lens is focusing behind where you want it to you would use +, to bring that plane of focus forward

i need to ask. can i hook up a wireless mic to my jvc camra like you have. if so. how?
@daveknowshow9 жыл бұрын
+Bison Workshop I don't think you can on the jvc. no mic input plug on that model jvc.
@BisonWorkshop9 жыл бұрын
it will when im done. ill just add one
@daveknowshow9 жыл бұрын
make sure you add one that has a switch built in to turn off the one on the camera. that will help noise issues from running two mics at the same time. I been thinking about using an additional audio recorder for the audio tracks. just a simple unit like a sony model no. icd-px312 bought it at walmart.
@BisonWorkshop9 жыл бұрын
+daveknowshow i desided to do my sj4000 instead. i will use a jack that cancels the other mic when something is pluged in it. so if i was going to do this too the jvc thats how i would do it, but i dont want to mess with it. on the sj4000 i will remove the mic in it. and i just bought a second one just incase i mess it up with braking it while taking it apart. im not worried about my work on the electronic part. thats a breeze but we are talking about cheap plastic. loli will be videoing that mod. when i get the new one.i also ordered this to try out. www.ebay.com/itm/252123267158?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Thank you so much. it's so informative video. Lots of love from India. I want to ask something. when I go to Adjust by lens option then if I click info. for getting the info of the lens like 18-135mm, so many 0000000 like this comes which says review/edit lens information. I don't know what is this. Please help. I am using 7D mark2.
@daveknowshow7 жыл бұрын
the 7d mark 2 should automatically know the lens as long as the lens is hooked up to the camera. when you press the info button on the left side of the camera you should go to the calibration screen where you can adjust the bias of the point of focus. whether its in front of behind or spot on the center selected point. I hope that makes sense. you may need to watch the video again and look at where the info button is at 6 minutes 23 seconds into this video. be sure your hitting the correct button and your screen looks like mine. I hope this helps and thank you for watching.

Good video. I have the same focus issues with my 7D. How do do set up your focus points so that everyone in a group shot is in focus? I find this confusing. Thanks.
@daveknowshow9 жыл бұрын
it is always a challenge when doing group shots. a down and dirty rule of thumb to get the job done is first make sure the focus plane of the camera is parallel with everyone in the group. a group of 5 people on a stair case one on each step going up or down would NOT have everyone on the same parallel plane if shot straight on. the person in front could be in focus and the one in the rear would be out of focus. so avoid that! also stop it down to f9 if possible or some variant. in other words dont shoot wide open at f2.8 your depth of field will be shallow. stopping down to f5.6 you would have a thicker depth of field at f9 it would be even thicker! so stopping it down will help get everyone in focus or at least increase the odds.

@tonygrech12329 жыл бұрын
good video. Thanks. I think its better to a use a timer to take the photo so that you can remove any shake when you are taking the photo
@daveknowshow9 жыл бұрын
Tony Grech camera shake when on a tripod is near non existent. the amount of shake would not come near the amount of depth of field at f2.8 which is what this lens is. even at f1.2 if you have a lens that fast using a tripod will result in very little camera shake that will simply not affect this calibration process. if your shooting hand held then keep your shutter speed up high enough to counter any user camera shake. it blows my mind that so many people insist on a timer or remote shutter release to limit camera shake and those same people us the "focus recompose" method of shooting images. it simply does not affect point of focus to the degree to be able to see it.

How you do to focus on live view so fast? On mine it take some time to focus
@daveknowshow5 жыл бұрын
I don't have any issues focusing fast on live view. make sure your battery is fully charged. that could be the problem since it takes a lot more power to focus during live view than when live view is off.

How far away from the camera was the focusing point, is it a crucial measurement?
@daveknowshow10 жыл бұрын
not that important, more important that you keep it the same for wide or zoomed testing. however, I generally try and stay just over the closest focusing distance of the lens. for example if my 70-200 has a close focus distance of 1.4 meters just over that is where I start my testing. after setting up the calibration I may retest at the mid distance ie: half way between the closest distance the lens will lock focus and the furthest distance just before infinity. if my lens closest is 1.4 meters and the furthest is 10 meters "just before infinity or the circle of confusion" half that would be around 5 or 6 meters. so I test at that distance. which is not easy to do from the camera back and is better done tethered to a laptop or some larger viewing screen. hope this helps.

What mode are you adjusting at?

it don't matter as long as its not a custom mode. I shoot in manual mode 99% of the time. I'm not 100% sure what would happen if you calibrate in a custom function mode.
@graphicartdude10 жыл бұрын
Dave, would you advice against doing firmware updates?
@daveknowshow10 жыл бұрын
my feeling is "if its NOT broke why fix it" in other words do your research on what the update will do for you as a photographer or videographer depending on what you use the camera for. if the camera is working fine then why mess up a good thing? if the update is gonna add some bells and whistles that you just have to have then go for it but maybe wait 60 days to see if there are any complaints or issues that come along with the update.
@graphicartdude10 жыл бұрын
***** Exactly what I was thinking. There were a couple of features in this 2.0 update I was interested in, but not sure it's worth the risk. I have been noticing a lot of my lenses haven't been very sharp (even with fast shutter speeds and correct technique). Your video should help immensely. Thanks again.
