Excellent tips, also meadows can be deceptive, and a heavy vehicle in a seemingly sturdy meadow can weigh enough to sink the tires enough for you to get stuck. If you are faced off road with a stuck vehicle alone, the cost to the land by getting someone there to pull you out is way worse than trying to be creative and get close to nature. That nature DOES NOT WANT YA THERE!! We have horrible wildfires in Washington State right now. The air quality in our state is awful. If anyone is traveling in Washington, please have a different plan than a campfire. 😢

Thanks. I love useful, and informative videos. 🌎, our only home, and the only planet that billionaires should be spending their extreme wealth on is on a rapid path of extinction. When I take a deep breath on the East Coast, I don’t want my lungs filled with smoke from the West coast, and plants like Sunshine, not Sunhaze. How much more suffering and devastation will it take before humans put everything into it like our lives depend on it? Remember there is a tipping point at which nothing we do will matter.

I seriously can't understand why people have to have fires all the time. I rarely have fires, maybe when it's real cold and then a small one. And if fires are a must please only burn what wood you can pick up from the ground. I've been to some places where you can't find even twigs nearby or one all the surrounding trees.

I wish by just talking about "leave no trace" would do the trick. Perhaps there are those out there who are truly just uninformed but sadly I think we are dealing with many people who just don't care. What do you do and say that could get them to care? Certainly though thank you for your kind efforts. It's good to keep trying.

We just camped a couple of weeks ago in the Olympic National Forest in a spot where the sites were at the water. Some idiot who must have stayed there quite a bit had a bucket with a seat on it and a huge hole dug for their potty not 15 from the water! I filled it in. Lots of trash also. Such a beautiful place with a family of otters. People Clean Up After Yourselves!!! And don't put up a portapotty by the water!

Great video Carolyn. I backpacked in the Sierras in the 50's and 60's with my parents and remember when you wouldn't see another person for one or two weeks. Now I live in Bishop and it's scary how many people come through to go to places that are no longer remote. And the lack of respect for this beautiful area is so sad. Even one piece of trash left by each person can add up to TONS of trash. I was also a Girl Scout and was taught at a very early age to "leave no trace". When I camp, I make sure when I leave there isn't a single piece of trash left. It only takes a minute. So thank you for reminding us all that it's up to us to be sure our grandchildren and great grandchildren have places to enjoy.

They should give a mandatory class to any purchaser of an RV, a tent or anything having to do with any kind of camping, hiking, etc. regarding fires and leaving no trace! It’s mostly common sense, but unfortunately most of our population is unconscious.🥴

R-E-S-P-E-C-T! LEAVE NO TRACE!!! Let's keep Nature beautiful! Yay!!! Thank you, Carolyn! Great job!!! NO cigarette butts either and NO DIAPERS!!! NO ammo and broken glass!!! Clean it all up!!! I don't know how many times I have had to clean up a campsite, my favorite campsite, to make it tolerable after littered with cigarette butts and toilet paper. Don't know how the people could stand it themselves. As for fire rings, they are not trash receptacles and not for trash burning. Glass, cans and plastic do not disappear when burned. Fires should not be wild blazing bonfires either. Rings can limit breezes blowing ash and embers and help contain heat. Let's all keep Nature beautiful! PLEASE!!!

In New Zealand we have lost access to many many free camping places where you could once camp. Some which had had toilets etc. The reason: people abusing the sites. Lighting fires, destroying the toilets and the rubbish and human waste . I have weeped when cycling the back country at finding rubbish and piles of poop and toilet paper on and beside roads. And so called disposable nappies! Why I don't know. Too many tourists or just too many people who haven't learnt to leave no trace. A basic skill we were taught as children. I don't know and I'm not sure what the solution is.

Completely off today’s subject but I just need to compliment you on your hair! With all the dye long gone your hair is such a beautiful warm silver - not gray! and those pigtails - your hair looks so thick and soft. I’m getting there and I too have refused to cover my gray - the last time I got a grime was for my sons wedding this past April and the stylist said I was about 75% there. Thankfully my hair, like yours has decided to be a nice silvery color - not some dull gray. And also thanks for this explanation you’re doing today. It helps a lot when you explain it in a simple, direct and concise way as you are doing. Here’s to you and Sadie girl having a lovely time wherever you’re at. I LIKE YOUR HAIR.YOU'RE LOOKING AMAZING!!!!LOVE THE GREY WITH ORANGE SHIRT. THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT POOP LOL THAT'S REALLY DISGUSTING TO SEE PEOPLES' CRAP ALL OVER THE PLACE.ABOUT THE ROCK PATHS,I DON'T GET WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT,IF THE ROCKS ARE ALREADY THERE...WHY CAN'T YOU BE CREATIVE WITH THEM AND MAKE A GARDEN OR A PATH,THEY ARE PART OF NATURE AREN'T THEY? I AM JUST CURIOUS, WHY YOU SHOULDN'T DO THINGS WITH THE ROCKS? :)

The idea is to experience nature as Mother Nature created it, not someone’s idea of what it should be, if you need a rock garden do it in your own yard

Love your hair and your bronze skin! My tan is mostly from mowing, would much rather it be from camping! Hopefully next year.... 😉

I rarely have a fire, as I use my backpacking stove, but I recently bought a portable fire pit - a stand with a special mesh that holds all of the ashes and embers. Have not used it yet, nor will I use it until we have had some rain. Thank you for the MVUM info.

Great video with lots of tips about roads, the confusing time limit issue, fires (I don't have them any more). If I bury my poop while backpacking, I dig a hole, cover it with the biggest rock I can find, then put dirt over the rock so dogs and other critters can't dig it up. Thanks again for all you do to help inform all of us.

Me, my husband, and daughter always leave our campsite cleaner than we find it. We bring the garbage we gather goes with us until we find a proper garbage disposal!! This is the true way to camp and be out in nature 🌲🌳🌿.

What do you do with a dog when you backpack? I'm having a garage sale tomorrow. Getting out of bricks and sticks. Nervice exited freaking out in a good way.

Congratulations, Eric, on your new adventure. I always took my dogs with me when I went backpacking. They had their own backpacks and we're trained to stay on the trail. My two dogs even stayed on the trail when a year old bear cub stood frozen on a log pretending to be invisible until we passed by! It was so cute!!!

Congrats Eric on your new adventure! If your pup is able, take your dog with you and remember to bring enough supplies for both of you. If it is a short hike with uncertain terrain and the weather is cool enough, you could leave your dog behind, but only when you know it is not going to be too hot. When I had Capone, I just did not backpack or leave him for long stretches, as he was older and could not handle excursions like that. Best of luck to you!

Please, can you tell me a good phone app or website which would let me know the terrain across the United States. I will be travelling alone with a heavy trailer and don't want to drive in the mountains. I am going from Georgia to Montana...what route would be the best? Thanks so much.

Great question! I use an App call Freeroam and it has an elevation layer. It’s easy if you k kw how to read a topo map. I don’t think it’s possible to avoid the mountains completely. Safe travels!
