How To Can in a Vintage Bail And Wire Glass Dome Canning Jar

There are a lot of videos on KZbin that show young people using these old non-mason, glass top ball and atlas canning jars the wrong way. Here is the correct way to use them. They are not recommended for home canning use any more so use it at your own risk.

Yeah the traditional ball jars are just hard and expensive to get out side of the USA.

They are not recommended for home canning use ONLY BECAUSE INDUSTRY WANTS PEOPLE TO BUY NEW RINGS AND LIDS EVERY YEAR. Nothing wrong with using these jars. No plastic, no BPA or whatever, no rust and no cheap Chinese lids failing to seal. Take care of your bale jars and rubber rings and they'll last for years.

Exactly! Everyone is so worried about what the USDA says is safe, but a bunch of them trust the non-fda approved weck canning jars, that are the exact same system as the vintage! The only difference is the way the lid is held during the canning process.

@@frugalprepper I've had good success at flea markets. I even flew across the country with some I found at a swap meet. Ofcourse my bag was "checked". The "agent" had no idea what they were -_-. I'm on the hunt for the rings to use the glass lids now!

You saved me alot of headache! I was snapping them down not letting the air out broken seals on all of them driving my self mad! Got 500 or so for 10 cents each figured I'd try them thanks for the info!

A TIP! ... I just found this out last night - After you get the glass jar out of the water bath, BE VERY CAREFUL when you flip up the bail to lock it for a day (when flipping that bail down to lock it) the torque in doing so can move the glass top out of position just enough to dislodge it and it will spray boiling hot liquid all over your right breastural area 😬!.... And dang does that hurt like hell- SO, hold the glass top with a towel when your flip these- it will at least help you not get sprayed so bad if it does happen

I'M CANNING WITH THESE RIGHT AT THIS MOMENT!!- Just sat down while they're processing and found your video! I did some research on these as I started to find quite a lot of them at the transfer station dump that people were dumping- some boxes had never even been used and brand spanking new! I'm my research earlier with these- the people who use them said that they get many more uses out of the rubber gaskets than regular metal tops and will use them until they crack- so I figured it was a good deal. They seem to be working pretty well so far and seal very well too. Thanks for the info of the part of the lip that needs to be clean and that after it's cool to put both bails down to know of the food safety aspect- I did not know that trick! QUESTION...have you noticed if the processing times are any different or is it because I don't really know what I'm doing??😬 ...p.s. - enjoyed the into to your video👍

Hey brother, so here I am washing couple dozen of wire bail jars I was able to buy cheap, just because of your video. I wanna experience canning meat with those. Can you please clarify couple things. The jars I have are atlas and ball, some are round body some are square. Are the both safe for pressure canner? Second, question is regarding the seal. The website you provided has bunch of different seals. The first three are for wire bail jars. First one is fruit jar rings, second one is white for storage, and third one is jar rubber. Are they all different or not? which one should I use for meat. Thank you for your time and hope you doing well.

Being that the glass lid is domed upward, is the same 1 inch head space or it is the headspace less because of the extra room in the domed lid? Thank you

I don't know. Headspace is something that I have just never done or worried about . I fill them up till about the bottom of the lid threads of the jar. I never even heard of head space when I was little canning with my mom or grandma. On the wire bails I usually leave a little more room.

Old as in many years old, they are jars with nothing in them, only seals and lids and I can not get them off

Pull on the rubber tab and they will unseal

Picked up some more antique jars and am canning dill pickles right now. Question? How do I remove the lids for consuming later? I would prefer to reuse the rubber rings in the future. Is there a trick without chipping the glass?

You pull on the tab and the rubber ring stretches and breaks the vacuum.

If you have old jars with nasty rusted wire and bails, they do sell new wires and bails.

If you soak the jars in water and vinegar, then scrub, it will remove the rust from the wire bails.
