Unfortunately it was a tough winter and if your bigleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood, meaning they create their flower buds for the following year shortly after they finish blooming, it won't bloom this year as frost killed those flower buds formed in the previous season. If your variety blooms on new wood as well, meaning they create their flower buds once they begin growing in spring, then you will have flowers this year. Check out varieties from Endless Summer Hydrangea collection that bloom on both old and new wood.

I trimmed mine,I did what you did but why is it that they did not bloom ? What is the problem ?

I am sorry to hear your bigleaf hydrangeas did not bloom this year! Likely it is because they bloom on old, not new wood. Spring frost, unfortunately, killed those flower buds that were formed on old wood last fall. Trimming helped new growth to sprout, and hopefully it will form new flower buds for next year. In my garden only two hydrangeas that bloom on new wood have beautiful blooms.

I am a little shocked to see all over the area people/landscapers left dead canes up for so long. It's obvious the new buds all died and they were lifeless when they snapped clean away. If a cane had any life in it, simply cut above the living bud on the cane and now my bush looks normal and is in full bloom! Years of proper mulching, compost and fertilization has kept a 24 yr old shrub looking perfect year after year. 🙏 You sound northwestern European, may you and your family be safe if there's any concern.

I can't agree more! I still see many dead canes around and there is no miracle to bring those back, so they need to be cut down to let the new canes to grow. I am so glad to hear you taking such a good care of your hydrangeas. I have a couple of varieties that bloom on new wood and I see a few flower buds coming out now. I'm really excited to see some blooms this summer! I should admit, I don't have guts to replace my hydrangeas with varieties that bloom on new and old wood, so I would have to sit this year out and hope for the best next year. Thank yоu so much for your kind words!

Regrettably after the low temperatures in U.K. in 2022 this year most of my hydrangeas have normal amount of foliage but no blooms. Sure it was the weather but have added some bone meal to see whether this helps them bloom. Time will tell. 😊

Thank you for sharing! All 8 of mine bigleaf hydrangeas have good foliage as well but only 3 of them bloom on new wood and now are forming flower buds. I am very excited to add one more this year - it also blooms on new wood and has unusual dark foliage. Just need to find a good spot for it 😃
