I'm viewing from Aurora Ontario. This is my first year growing a Twist and Shout variety hydrangea. I've noticed two 1 1/2" spots of smooth white stem on my plant and hopeful it's not a sign disease and is the result of a late spring frost we had in May.

Greetings from Chicago. Happy to see this great video from my home Garden State. Two years ago, I over pruned and got zero blooms. Last winter I stared at the ugly skeletons all season, but was rewarded with super growth, fullness, and more blooms. I am hoping to find a middle ground this year. I want the "endless" blooms that the name promises, but have a hard time looking at the sad leaves all winter.

@@KellyLehman Question....in winter/early spring, what to do with the old scraggly brown dead leaves on the skeleton branches? Do I trim the off to "clean it up" - or should l leave them? Thanks from Minnesota!

We’ve always loved hydrangeas but for some reason never had one. My wife got her first for Mother’s Day this year from our kids. She’s a beauty…..and the flower is really pretty too. There’s so much to learn about caring for it, your videos are the most informative and clearest I’ve found. Now living the dream in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Hey Ocean Pebbles, thanks for checking in from Virginia Beach, VA 👋🌍. So happy this helped ! I used to do the same thing to my hydrangeas before I stumbled across the trick of not cutting them back every year . If it find the blooms start to look smaller and the stems are not as sturdy after a few years of not pruning , I’ll give them an early winter pruning just to recharge them. And then I leave them alone again and let them do their thing . Happy gardening . 😊🌸

Kelly Lehman OMG!! I love love your hydrangeas. Thank you so much for all the info you are giving us on how to care for them. They’re beautiful. 😍 I just found out about your videos a couple weeks ago. I also started to follow you on Instagram. I’m watching your wonderful videos from Los Angeles, CA. I have a couple of hydrangeas that I planted two years ago they had beautiful flowers when I bought them. But this year they haven’t flower at all, even though I’ve been watering them everyday during summer because it gets hot in LA, between 80’s 90’s. I fertilize them about 6 times this year. I didn’t prune them last year, to see if they will bloom, but they haven’t bloomed. Although they look very lush. I wonder what I’m doing wrong ? Thank you Isabel
@KellyLehman
@KellyLehman 4 жыл бұрын
@@isabelumana5035 Hi Isabel! So glad you are part of our Flower Tribe . Happy you found us. Well if you saw the video above and think your hydrangeas were pruned properly, it has enough sun, and is being watered, then here is what I think.... It sounds like you have a super healthy plant that is a little too happy to bloom. Here is what may be happening . The Fertilizer you use may have too much nitrogen. Nitrogen encourages big healthy green leaves but phosphorous is the element that encourages bloom production .Most fertilizers have the formula NPK listed on the bag in a three number format like 10-10-10 The N stands for Nitrogen which promotes lush leaves ( foliage growth) The P stands for phosphate which encourages flower production and root growth The K stands for Potassium which promotes the overall health of the plant and builds up disease resistance . To give your hydrangeas a some help in producing better blooms, try using a granular slow release formula with a higher percentage of phosphorus which is your middle number on the label. Miracle grow has a Bloom booster flower food with a formula of 10-52-10. That means there is a 10% concentration of Nitrogen, a 52% concentration of phosphate and a 10% concentration of potassium . Since the middle number (phosphate) is higher, you should get more blooms . Here is a link to amazon for this ➡️ amzn.to/2piWZRH A single application of fertilizer in spring or early summer is all you need . I would do this once and then leave them be . I stay away from fertilizers if my hydrangeas are already looking good. Over fertilizing is often a bloom inhibiter. It's also a good idea to get your soil tested once every few years . Here is a list of places that may be available for you in your state to send in a soil sample and have your soil tested. Most of these places will also give you recommendations of what you will need to improve your soil so you can grow stronger plants. gardeningproductsreview.com/state-by-state-list-soil-testing-labs-cooperative-extension-offices/ In most cases, you go online and follow the instructions on sending in a soli sample and answer a few questions regarding what you are growing, sunlight and water this land receives . Also, hydrangeas do love water especially with hot temps like you have but there is such a thing as over watering. Sometimes overwatering can inhibit bloom production. Maybe cut back the watering a bit to see what happens . Thanks for your great question! See you in the next video! 🌺🌺🌺

Since here in Canada (Quebec) we have so long and rude winters, it is my paradise to be surrounded by beautiful flowers all summer long since it is so short. Hi Kelly. I'm a gardener running a small but inspired maintenance business in Melbourne, Australia. I've had this 'wrangle' with a few customers at times over how much to cut back the Hydrangeas. You are totally correct. I love watching KZbins that validate approaches that I've adopted despite rampant alternative views...I had a beautiful 40 year old Hydrangea of the variety you're discussing at my last home & explored optimal pruning over a few years but pretty much worked out that I did not want to cut back very much off the top due to those 'old wood' flowers...Awesome work!

Hi Michael , so fun to read your comment and realize that I have experienced the same conversations with other gardeners here on the other side of the globe. Happy to know this technique works well for you too. I know some people get a little ouchy when I recommend trying a season without the hydrangea pruning . Different techniques work in different gardens . Sounds like our hydrangeas both do best by avoiding too many haircuts . 😊😎

Thank you, Kelly! We've started tending our yard and we have two hydrangeas. One is huge and the other looks like it's struggling to live every year. Hopefully this will be the year. I'm thinking of filling up the beds in front of the house with hydrangeas and move my flowers. They'll have full sun now that we removed 13 pine trees. Now we'll not argue about their care. Hi Shelly , sure thing . Happy to help spread the garden love. I love the idea of having hydrangeas in the front of your house . I’ve seen pictures of mansions in the Hamptons of Long Island that had giant hedges of hydrangeas as their focal point surrounding the front out line of the house . They were breathtaking ! 😊 Having lots of sun is great too. If there are areas that get morning sun and afternoon shade , that’s even better for hydrangea varieties like endless summer and annabelle. Consider adding a few Limelight Hydrangea too . They live full sun and are ridiculously gorgeous and low maintenance. Happy gardening 😊🌸

Hi Kelly, I have a few hydrangea bushes., 3 new last year seam to be growing fine, but 2 years ago. I bought a couple and cut them down in the fall and never did they grow or do anything , so this year I was going to get rid of them but I saw a tiny bit of green coming in so I just left them, don’t know why 2 years later they are just coming alive. But any help from you would be appreciated, I live in alliston Ontario Canada just a little north of Toronto, I am in zone 5,,, thankyou looking forward to more, ohhhh do endless summer survive in hot summer sun as I bought my daughter one.in may but there is no shade in her yard, also how do you get a nice full hydrangea hedge of different colours...thanks again

Thank you so much, I wish I watch earlier. I already cut my Hydrangeas down to the ground last fall. I expected more flowers for this spring. At least I learned my lesson. I hope next year I will have.
@KellyLehman
@KellyLehman 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Emine, Well the good news is that you gave them a “recharge” by cutting them down. This means more energy will be put into the root and leaf systems since the hydrangea is not worried about creating and sustaining hydrangea flowers on the old wood stems you pruned back . Even better news is that if this was an Endless Summer Hydrangea, you should get the second set of hydrangea flowers that come in on new growth at the end of summer . So it’s all good . This may also translate in to better flowers next year. I actually give my hydrangeas a recharge pruning every 5-6 years if I see they are not producing as many hydrangea flowers as they used to .

Hi Kelly! I'm in North of Montréal, Qc. From your video, I'm pretty sure I have those big round and white Anabelles! They started blooming early in the summer and right now they are huge big white balls! :-)...turning a bit on the greenish side. When you say pruning very little because of the "old wood" do I cut those big flowers when it's late fall? (You call this dead head them). OR I don't touch anything at all and let nature do all the work in the spring even though many leaves will have died... 🤔 It's such a delicate and complicated science. Thank you. for your help. Kelly, you are amazing! I've been looking for a video like this and have subscribed to you! I have a "dwarf limelight hydrangea" that is to get 3 - 5 feet tall, I've had them (6 of them) for two summers total. They bloom beautifully (lots of flowers) and I haven't touched them from a pruning perspective until this Spring (so nervous to do it), but felt I had to. I watched 500 (ok, that's an exaggeration, but it felt like it) videos on how to do this, but none addressed dwarf limelight specifically and the reason I felt I had to prune this Spring is because those beautiful flowers were so heavy, my bushes were splitting in the center and the branches all bending towards the ground and flowers were practically in the mulch. I planted these limelights in the back believing they would be taller than the rose bushes I have in the next layer and lilies in the front layer. What can I do to get them five feet tall and still blooming versus splitting and lying on the ground?? THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE! I will be looking up your links as well! xo

Just 'stumbled' across your video ( without even looking for it ) I live in a Artarmon ( a suburb of Sydney, Australia ) and we have two small Hydrangea's on the property we rent. I had often wondered how to care for the plants not being a great gardener. My Grandfather was a very keen gardener and grew the most amazing Hydrangeas at their home in Kallista in the Dandenong Ranges outside Melbourne, Victoria. As we are just the first few days into summer and we have a couple of small blooms coming on the plants seeing your video was just the most perfect timing and gave me more information to help our two plants. So, I would like to thank you very much for the video as it was of a great help to me. James ..

It's so amazing to me to think that my hydrangeas are going dormant now in this cold snowy NJ winter weather just as yours are blooming beautifully in sunny Sydney. Loved the story of your memories of you grandfathers hydrangeas . Sometimes i wonder if my kids and future grandchildren will remember me for my hydrangeas and peonies. I hope so . I’ve also learned to have my ph soil tested. Also I dilute food color to which ever color hydrangea I have to get deeper color. Like blue for blue, etc. Just pour the solution at the roots. Water them really good first, then saturate them really good so that the solution gets to the roots. I do this twice a year. It really works. Have your ph soil tested for sure. That will tell what nutrients your soil needs.

These were planted 3 years ago with large spacing and at first I pruned but did not last year and now they join together and look brilliant. Now I know why. I’m in Kent in England so the soil makes them turn pink but I regularly water with soil acidifier which makes them turn as blue as yours. Result !
