I bought a gallon Sized prayer plant and it died on me the first few days. It was on clearance and looked a little sad when I picked it up. I kept the gallon pot filled with the dead plant and soil put it under a shelve... 3 months later there’s a huge stem and leaves forming. 😶 LOL WELL OK WELCOME BACK PRAYER PLANT ❣️

I will say that calatheas are my favorite too. I rescued my first one (a calathea makoyana) from a garden center here in Indianapolis last summer and I can tell it was struggling because they kept it outside in direct heat. They gave it to me for 50% off thinking they are selling me a dying plant. Ever since then, I kept it 3-4 ft from an east facing window with a sheer curtain. I also cut off all the leaves that was burned (from being outside too long) and kept the soil moist (I use the moisture meter a lot and use distilled water) but not saturated. I mist it at least 2x a day and I keep it next to my humidifier. I haven’t fertilized mine. All these things seems to make them happy. It grew like crazy! It’s about 2ft wide and a foot long. I can tell it needs to be repotted because when I water it, it drains too quickly. I want to but I will wait until spring because I don’t want to shock the plant. I also use a small plastic crate with holes on it, turned it upside down, put a bowl of water underneath it and use it as a plant stand. That way, the water slowly evaporates around the plant and create humidity. The main thing is that you try to create a similar environment like it’s natural habitat. They prefer high humidity so it’s good to invest in a hygrometer. Now that it’s winter, I use a grow light because it’s been cloudy most of the time. I also winterized my windows so no cold drafts can seep through. Remember, most house plants are tropical plants. They need the same temperature like as human beings and they need moisture in the air. Harli is right. If the plant is around too much light, some of the leaves will burn and some will even turn lighter. After I figured this out, I started collecting more calatheas because they are just so colorful and beautiful! I now have 7 different types.

I LOVE CALATHEA!! They’re definitely my favourite!! In my case, the top 3 easiest Calatheas are: 1.Calathea/Stromanthe Triostar (Gorgeous little baby!! And a fast grower too!! Some people really have problems taking care of these, my tips are: strictly no tap water & keep it away from direct sunlight.) 2.Calathea Beauty Star (Probably the least fussy calathea! Very easy to please, just give it the basic calathea needs.) 3.Calathea Makoyana (Hirts has definitely caused some damage to yours, because the Mokoyana are genuinely easy to care if you got a healthy plant in the first place) And the most difficult Calathea I’ve encountered for now is definitely the Calathea Zebrina. I’ve accidentally killed one and I didn’t even know what I did wrong... Now I’ve got another one and hopefully it will be happy and healthy🤞🤞

That's comforting to know. I bought a Calathea Zebrina which hated me on sight. I ended up put it outside in the garden (I live in Africa) but it's still not happy. Not dead but it's leaves are curled up lengthways, I think that's because it's too hot but there's nothing I can do about that.

Great video! Prayer plants are my favorite plants ever, I have 18 of them and aim to collect them all. Definitely worth the fuss! Also be careful not to stress the plant to much. I have a Calathea Zebrina that was thriving and I had to repot because it was getting to big. I made the mistake to try and do this without help, which resulted in a terrible repotting job because it was just to big to handle by myself. After this it really suffered: brown tips, yellowing of the leaves and so on. Finally after a couple of months it seems to be recovered and is growing new, nice leaves. Moral of the story: annoy Calatheas and they will let you know, big time! Anyway, keep up the good work, love all your vids!
@HarliG5 жыл бұрын
Oh very good to know! Thanks for the heads up. I have been using the cache pot method for now because I am so scared of repotting it! I will probably put it off as long as possible to avoid the stress on both myself & the plant :P Thank you so much!

@@HarliG I might be the weird one that repots calatheas directly after buying them, haha. Never had a problem with it though, so don't be scared! The only time it failed is the above story as the plant was just too big to handle alone. So as long as you are careful it should be fine ;).

I treat troubled plants by cutting off dead, dying and diseased parts - within reason this time though. I have bought quite a sad calathea royal standard, cut off the broken and beyond help leaves, and there are several new leaf shoots around the bottom but i will let them grow out before taking off too many damaged leaves. I think the nursery was using tap water, constant dampness and exposure to cold air. I have it in my bathroom for humidity (3 shower-ers a day), filtered morning light and will check on the roots in the next day or so not wanting to shock it too much. I have my fingers crossed this bargain plant will reward me with pretty new leaves soon. This really is plant parenting 101 for me. Thanks for your insights on this.

I put all my prayer plants and calathea on a small folding table next to east-facing windows but relatively lower than the window sill. In essence, they have direct morning light and freckled light in the afternoon. I place their (terracotta) pots on top of some rock rivers submerged in a huge dish of water for humidity. It has been 6 weeks for this setup and my prayer plants are happily putting out 3 new leaves every week. Also on the same plant station, I clutter all the plants for warmth and humidity. My cat loves this mini garden, so I had a bed basket next to them. Now she enjoys sleeping there all the time.

I just became a new houseplant mom about a month ago. Lol I now own 5 plants..I have a snake plant, fiddle fig, peperomina, Calathea ornata and a Calathea medallion. Both calathea’s I ordered off of Etsy from a place in Florida. I live in Indiana. All my plants are thriving except the medallion which is my favorite. 😭 I have all the plants on a table right in front of a west facing picture window. I have navy curtains which helps block out the direct sunlight. The first 3 days the medallion was great but then we got hit with some cold weather. Ever since the plant has been droopy and I can’t get it to revive. The soil is not dry. I even reported it thinking it would help it but it’s still droopy. A couple of the leaves have started to fade or turn yellow. All my other plants are looking great. The humidity level is at 64% at this very moment and has been about that range since I’ve had the plant. Any ideas what could be wrong with it? It’s such a beautiful plant and I want it to last forever. Lol Also, I keep reading and hearing how well draining soil is recommended but no one shares specific brands. Google only shows me Miracle Gro or cheap generic brands. What brand of well draining soil do you use? I just discovered you today and have watched several of your videos. Lol So if you’ve already shared that info, I apologize! I have major plant envy now too! 😂

I've been lucky to never had trouble with calatheas. (touch wood) My first proper plant was a calathea magicstar. brought her home, then decided to look up how to take care of her. oops. so all i heard was they can be tricky. cue me stressing out and panicking over my new plant! i was pretty much a plant serial killer before that point tbh. anyway. i stuck her on a windowsill (i live in the west of ireland, we literally have mostly cloudy skies so all my calatheas do great on windowsills), bought a soil moisture meter, only watered her when she was a bit curly, and gave her rainwater. somehow she did fine. i eventually invested in a humidifier for a homalomena i got and the calathea just started growing like crazy when i did. i sort of love these guys now for how they tell you when they're not happy? (leaf curl, droopiness) and have a whole bunch of them. i need to quit buying them. but you know how it is.

People say that pebble water trays and misting doesn't affect humidity because it doesn't affect it to a point that is meaningful. My shoebox size humidifier pumps through up to half a litre of water each HOUR. It's putting that much water into the air. If I left a pebble tray with half a litre of water to sit for a few days or a week, guarantee you that most of the water would still be remaining. Unless your plant is kept in a small closed environment (eg. closed terrarium) would anything like standing water be effective at increasing humidity from say 30% to 50% or 60%. I'd love to continue the discussion!

The second which I got at the same time is struggling but now has 1 leaf and a new shoot. i would lije your advice on my calathea rufibarba. It was under a small strip grow light, but the red on the back of the leaves is completely gone in spots, each leaf has lost about half of the red and the pattern on the front is almost imperceptible. Still too much light? Should I trim these leaves off or leave them be and see how they do. It has sufficient water. I was really surprised at how little light your collection was getting on the shelving neae to the window with the sheer curtain. I was completely overestimating light need. Thank you for your videos, info, humor and dedication to your plant collwction and to your viewers.

Back in February I saw a Red Prayer plant at Wal-Mart for $2.50 (& it was the LAST one) I didn't want to buy it because I heard how fuzzy they can be. Well I bought it anyway & I'm so GLAD I did!! LOL Def high maintenance plant but it's been loving my care since day 1. Been blooming for me all summer too💜 What's the name of the Calathea at 7:17?? I have that one too but it only said 'Green' on the tag 😶

I’ve got one I rescued, I think it’s a Freddie. New growth is turning purple.💜Ever have that happen? 💜 When you picked up your plant and said this guy here..... that’s what I have that’s turning purple! Is that a Freddie? 🤷♀️

Love Calatheas, my favourite plant genus. Love your videos Harli, just one little observation, letting water sit overnight or for however long does not help with getting rid of chloramine or fluoride, only a filtration method will minimise chloramine in tap water; if you try to boil water to get rid of fluoride (which plants absolutely hate) the fluoride will become even more concentrated. Rain water, filtered water or distilled water is the only way to go to ensure there is no chloramine or fluoride in the water, healthy for both plants and humans alike.

Instead of putting your towels back over the rail after a shower, but them over a radiator in the same room as your calathea! I’ve got a huge stromanthe magic star, as well as some smaller calathea, and that’s all I do to maintain my humidity - it is a small room though

AHH I needed this video! I’ve killed a white fusion and a peacock and have no idea how. Though my peacock is doing beautifully 🤔 I’m thinking it was over fertilizing now 😬 I think I’m going to be brave and try another!

Can you elaborate on the fork trick to aerate the soil? How deep do you go with the fork? Do you just loosen the soil on top?

I’m a little scared, I just ordered a Freddie and I’m not super experienced. But I’m ready to put all I’ve got into caring for it when it arrives from Bloomscape

I was gifted one last year from my boyfriend's mom. No one told me how particular they are or how much they move. I was legit scared of the damn thing until i did my research. She even moved to certain music when she was just a babe. Now shes bigger and i guess it take too much energy to do completely. Brown tips are a issue even tho she's constantly putting out new shoots. She has also started to trail so we have some hang time over the pot. And im finally getting those 5 inch leaves. I give her filtered water and she EATS HUMIDITY. i steam her with both a (( water only)) oil diffuser and then power steam with a clothes steamer. Been thinking of trying the rusty nail iron treament. Have u heard of this? Thanks for the video. I think i may move her even more out of the sun now.

The most important think for all types of Calatheas is they need high level of humidity, if the house is little dry the Calathea won’t survive

I love this video! I just got into plants and I’m absolutely obsessed. You’re videos are very informative and enjoyable to watch. But I do have a question, what type of soil should I use for my Calathea and maranta? I really don’t want to kill them. Thanks in advance ☺️

Hello, I know this is an older video but I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find the hydrobox as she mentions. I don't see a link to it and I can't find one.

my calathea ornatas leaves tips are shrivelling and curling up and i don’t know how to fix it i’ve tried having a aroma diffuser next to it, pebble tray under it, taking it into the shower when my I have a shower and also when other people in my family have a shower. I have also been used brita filter water and it’s been getting low indirect light and i also water it so that it is moist but not soggy😅

Love the video ♡! Having a humidity meter helped me a lot! I try to keep it minimum at 50% and my calatheas seem better. I bought small ones at the beginning to test if I can take care of them, two are fine but one of them (makoya variety) lost all its leaves :( But I heard that they are able to bounce back so I'm definitely not throwing it out. Nice rammstein poster in the back btw!

Agnieszka Łukomska I need to get a humidity meter, I have just been running my thing for a few hours every morning & so far so good, but the meter would help so much!

My rattlesnake did really well for the first three quarters of the year but once the winter set in it started to get brown edges. I cut off all the bad leaves and as yet there is no new growth but its standing upright and the leaves are staying normal. I hope now its spring it will grow. Im wondering if i should put it back where it was too begin with.

I recently bought a calathea, and sadly some new leaves are turning yellow..! I give it water 1/week and it doesn’t stand in direct sunlight. BUT I got it with a 50% off tag because it looked a bit sad, is there anything I can do to make him more happy?

Harli! Your video was just in time for me! I just purchased two baby prayer plants and my pinstripe has a tiny bit of browning. Based on your video, I’m thinking it’s getting too much light. PS love your videos!

I just purchased a maranta that was getting too much light! The pattern is faded & it has a few brown spots. Hopefully it can be helped along. I also have a beauty star that doesn't seem happy with me at all... eep.
