Another tip: I stumbled upon this tidbit when I found the little plastic tag that came with the plant… On the back it stated that this type of plant is extremely sensitive to fluoride and chlorine, both of which are in our tap water. My plant had really been struggling, with the leaves browning and getting crispy. I removed the dead/dying leaves and began watering with distilled water, and she came back to life!

I had a similar experience. We switched from basic well water to water softener treated water. My plants were dying! Now I keep distilled water for them and they're much happier!

Same! I use the water from my fridge and microwave, or leave it on my counter to get to room temperature.

I had the same issue, and not just with this plant - those chemicals aren’t good for any plant. I have well water, and to soften it, we add salt crystals, and that stuff is so bad for plants. I was using spring water, but had problems with that too, so am now using distilled.

In a small village nestled in the mountains of ancient Mesopotamia, there was a healer who was renowned for her ability to cure the sick and bring life back to wilting plants. The villagers called her the "plant witch," as it seemed that she had a special bond with the natural world and could command the plants to grow and thrive. One day, a young boy brought her a small, delicate plant with bright green leaves that seemed to shimmer in the sunlight. The boy had found the plant growing on the side of a rocky cliff, and he believed that it had special powers. The healer took the plant and examined it closely. She had never seen anything like it before, and she was immediately struck by its beauty. She placed the plant in a special pot and tended to it carefully, watering it and tending to its every need. As the days passed, the healer noticed that the plant seemed to have a special energy about it. It seemed to thrive even in the most difficult of circumstances, and it seemed to bring life and vitality to the other plants around it. The healer began to experiment with using the plant to heal her patients. She brewed teas from its leaves and applied its extract to cuts and wounds, and she found that it had a miraculous ability to speed up the healing process and reduce pain. Word of the plant's medicinal properties spread far and wide, and soon people came from all over the region to seek out the healer and her miraculous plant. And so, the prayer plant became known as the "healer's plant," and it was used to bring health and vitality to all those who used it.

I have serious maranta envy! I have one that I bought on Ebay a few years ago. Initially it was fascinating to watch and looked really healthy. I went through an 18 month or so period of barely being home so it had the odd water and was in a room where the curtains were almost permanently closed. Now it is SO skinny and leggy and the few leaves it has have gone pale. I've moved it to indirect sunlight and there is now some new growth coming. Thanks to you its currently having a spa day under my humidifier 😍. It must think its Christmas🤣. No idea how I can cure the leggyness though without propogating which will mean just two stems to propogate and none of the initial roots remaining which terrifies me. Will be so sad to lose it.😱

Wonderful! Thank you. A friend gave me a maranta and I love it. I live in Florida and it was on my screened porch with low to medium indirect light and it loved it for two years. I was away recently and it dried out too much as well as surprisingly cold temperatures. It made it but some of the branches died. I've been fussing with it and had no idea how do save her. I appreciate this video, very informative and detailed. I'm going to propagate it in water then leca immediately. Thank you.

Hi. Great Vidio. I just would like to say my maranta grew like crazy, blooms as well during the heatwave we had the summer gone by here in the UK. Temp was around 90° average I think and humidity also very high, like 75- 85 average. Was about three feet in an east facing window. The previous winter, which was the first winter I had it, I lost one half of the side bush which I think was due to the cold and draught from the window. Ive now put it in a clear greenhouse thingy, temp is average of 18° atm. Looks like it's doing ok and has no more yellowing leaves which had started to happen when it got colder and I might have overwatered. Your Vidios are so much help and I love your personality. Thanks so much for making these and sorry for long comment.

It is soooo fun to watch your video and your super health and vigor prayer plant. So pretty and cool. Satisfying. _ Correct me if I am wrong about the ID. I remember both of green and red maranta you show in this video is Maranta Leuconeura. The green is Maranta Leuconeura Kerchoviana, and the red is Maranta Leuconeura Erythroneura. I remember I desperately another cultivar of Maranta Leuconeura which is Marisela or called Lemon Lime Maranta, and the seller always gave these two since they're more common to find while Lemon Lime Maranta is uncommon here in Indonesia. 🙏🏻😁 _ Hope my share of last experience is not too wrong remembered. 😁😁 Btw, I love your shirt. So matched with your pretty hair color. The white theme in your pots and wall decor, so fun to watch too. 😁

Great video! I might try my maranta in semi hydro using perlite instead of leca. I think leca might be too harsh on the fine roots. I'm wondering if the small pieces of perlite might hold the roots better with less gaps to allow the roots to dry out. Just a theory. Experiment time!

Hi Emma! I have a question about propagating this beautiful plant! My maranta is getting so full that one node is holding about five leaves and I see that it is weighing that branch down. Should I propagate this node or is it a watering issue?
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 2 жыл бұрын
You can defo propagate this node! As they grow longer vines, they will trail down a bit because of the weight. So you can prune it and prop to keep it standing tall or let it trail down. Up to you!

Or would they prefer a warm mist one?
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 3 жыл бұрын
Ooh super exciting! I really want a variegated one! Cool mist would be fine as long as the air temperatures aren't too low. Tap water in a humidifier shouldn't matter too much as it's water vapour that has evaporated out all the hard water stuff! Good luck :)

I have just acquired a red veined prayer plant from my grandfather and it had some pothos that grew into it because they were put close together and my grandfather didn’t think to keep them from growing together. Sooo... I have pothos vines/roots in the same pot with my prayer plant. After watching this video I have a few questions. 1) should I try to separate the maranta from the pothos plants that have taken over in its pot?. 2) if the answer to question 1 is yes.... then what is the safest way to go about it without harming either of the plants? 3) Or should I just leave it and hope for the best?
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 3 жыл бұрын
Haha love that! If I were you I'd probably try to remove it because their soil/watering needs aren't the same. To do so, carefully unpot them and try to detangle the roots. Pothos have fairly chunky roots, whereas marantas have fine ones, so you should be able to easily tell the difference. If you want more specific help, don't hesitate to reach out via IG and send me pics and I'll do my best to assist!

Mine is struggling. I think I’m going several things wrong. Should I repot? There are several dead stems. And I need the water meter lol

Such a fussy plant . Killed one. And bought another one. My house is superhot in the summer and very cold in the winter. I may give it to my aunt lol. Her house climate has better control. A lovely plant...Just too finikey for me

I have a question about some of my leggy prayer plants. One is so leggy, that it looks like a bare vine with a cluster of leaves at the end... almost like a lion's tail. Is there any way to remedy this? I feel bad for the plant, because it's so very pretty, but dang, it's leggy. Thanks!

When I have leggy plants I chop and prop and put those bits back into the original pot once they’re rooted

My prayer plant is the red and has bloomed all winter, tiny pinkest flowers, I never knew they bloomed! I’ve seen people cut leaves and poke them back into the soil so the plant is fuller, is that ok? My plant has grown so much & hangs over the sides of my pot, it doesn’t stand up like yours, am I doing something wrong?
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 3 жыл бұрын
You're not doing anything wrong you can totally keep it as a trailing plant. And yes you can chop and prop straight back into the soil if you want a bushier plant

Hi! I have a calathea medallion, from Patch. After watering it and leaving it to drain, it's remained wet for two weeks. I also have a red chinese evergreen and kentia palm with the same problem. Patch's soil isn't very well draining. Because prayer plants are so temperamental, I think repotting it with more perlite will probably shock it (especially this time of year). How much do you water it, when you do? Do you totally soak the soil? I've been using filtered water, but I'm now thinking I should just use a smaller amount of water to avoid over saturating the soil.

I've also found patch's soil to be super dense and not well draining in the home. If you think it's going to be an issue, repot the plants. I'm sure they'd rather the slight shock of a move than to have potentially harmful long term effects of overwatering and root rot. When I water I thoroughly soak the soil and I usually use tap water just because it's easier for me.

Do you know why my prayer plant doesn't raise his leaves at all? And it doesn't stand up like yours. It just droops over.

Do you have some scientific proof about morning watering becouse you are so convinced in that? In nature plant probably can choose when rain will fall, right?
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 3 жыл бұрын
In nature, plants have much more ventilation and wind which evaporates the water in the soil and on the leaves, making it dry faster. In our homes, the air doesn't do that so it sits stagnant and can lead to fungal issues or rot. This is especially an issue at night because it's cooler and darker meaning the plant isn't absorbing as much, so moisture just sits there

Scientific proof?? What an odd comment! She is giving us her opinion and advice based on her experience! Go ahead and water at night if you want to.
