Love this and all your videos. You are a true tonic. I actually have 2 schlumbergeras and they are budding , so now they get all the good care thanks to you. I have just shared this video with my friend Corrie. I used to work with her and I only used to see her twice a year on my and her birthday. Last year I bumped into her in town and I told her that I'm into plants and she told me that she is into plants too. Since that time we have been going regularly to the garden centre. Sometimes she texts me telling me to look at my gate because the plant fairy has been there. So plants have rekindled a friendship with Corrie and of course you. I love plants and I'm ever so greatful to them. Anyway I'm waffling, sending you and Hans lots of love and plant and crystal power from beautiful York to the emerald island 🌵🌈💎

Hi Lyn, thanks for your very interesting video! I always love your expertise. I have one Thanksgiving Cactus and one Christmas Cactus. My Schlumbergeras are sitting in an orchid mix of pine bark and coarse clay pebbles. Being tropical epiphytes like anthuriums and phals, I treat these plants pretty much the same in terms of temperature, watering, fertilizing and light. I've had my Thanksgiving Cactus for some 30+ years, and in my experience they love to spend the summer in a shady spot on my balcony. My Schlumbergeras are easy-care plants, and they bloom for me every year - the old lady up to three times a year. Oh, and in my experience they don't like to be sitting in a mineral mix. A soil-based succulent and cactus mix or an orchid mix is okay; a mineral mix is not. My experience. Lyn and Hans, have yourselves a wonderful and safe Christmas. Stay safe and healthy! Lots of love from Berlin to the Emerald Island. Marc

Really useful video. I did have some bud drop with a pale pink one I bought from Aldi a couple of weeks ago, but I’ve moved her to an east facing window now which has helped. Not many buds on my red one this year, but now I know how to treat her better! A question: how long should it take for leaf segment cuttings to root? I bought some cuttings of Limelight Dancer, Gold Fantasy, Malissa and Christan in mid November. No roots yet! They get a daily misting.
@desertplantsofavalon6 жыл бұрын
Hi Carol :-D the roots can take a lot longer to form at this time of year because of the short and dark days of Winter but they will root usually from about a month to 12 weeks :-D I have afew Schlumbergera cuttings I have been rooting for 3 months and they are only just sending out fine roots now haha :-D but it sounds like you are doing everything right with the fine misting to encourage them to root, and WOW wonderful choice of cuttings you have got there too :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and heaps of PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a wonderful Wednesday XXXXX

I'm a beginner and trying to find out about all my plants.should I move it to a closet for total darkness for twelve hours? And THEN bring it in the room in daytime? Does that work?( For blooming..)
@desertplantsofavalon5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ronette :-D yes these cacti are very sensitive to the shorter day lengths and a drop in night time temperatures and if you have your plant in a room that has additional lighting or heat it then this is often the reasons why they wont re bloom again

I have a question, I wonder if you know if this is typical. My thanksgiving cacti get lots of buds, but only about half of them open. Is this normal and is there a way to get more of the buds to open and not dry up or drop? I was given advice not to rotate them at all after buds have formed, so I already do that. I have fuscia, red (like yours) and peach.

I have a few Thanksgiving Cactus for many years (same parent plant). And one of them got the little pale bumps that the one in this video has. I didn't know what it was so I cut off the affected leaves. Plant seems to be ok but am wondering what this was and if I should worry if they show up again?
@desertplantsofavalon3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, the good news is a lot of the very tiny bumps are usually due to age and form as the plants mature, but sometimes it can be scale insect, Scale insect usually is light brown spots in colour and has a darker spot in the middle of the bump, they usually can be rubbed off easily with a damp cloth, but if the bumps don't rub off its most likely to be normal age bumps and is harmless, Good luck with your Thanksgiving cacti and thanks so much for watching, sending lots of love and plant power for a fantastic Sunday XXXX

I think I've let my cactuses get to dry cause they easily pull out of the pot and I have used a cactus fertilizer dirt to plant the plants in .any help on if they will come back to normal
@desertplantsofavalon3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kenny, if you have Christmas an Thanksgiving cacti and the soil is dry and they come out of the pot easy, it may be best to repot them again into a well draining soil, and then lightly water the soil just enough to moisten the soil, the Cacti should pick up again in time, if you have used normal cactus soil it will still be ok for these Christmas Cacti, you may just need to water more often as Christmas and Thanksgiving cacti like more moisture and water than the Desert Cacti do, but your Christmas Cacti will pick up again in time, water lightly for now, just enough to keep the soil moist but not very wet, thanks so much for watching, and good luck with your Cacti XXXX

My plant has some browning at the base soil level, like it's getting woody. It's not mushy brown and doesn't seem like rot. The plant is putting on new bright green growth and seems generally happy. @desertplantsofavalon5 жыл бұрын
Hi Diane :-D thats fantastic you have bought a Thanksgiving cactus full of buds, I bet you are so looking forward to seeing the beautiful blooms very soon :-D When in bud and flower I would water your plant every time the top of the soil dries out, but once the blooms have finished its best to give your plant a bit of a rest and withhold water for a month as these plants have a bit of a post flowering winter rest after they have finished blooming, but after a month you can start to water again and allow the soil to dry out fully in between watering :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a terrific Thursday XXXXX

I just bought a large one and the soil was bone dry so I watered it but the soil it came in is the wrong type for proper drainage/ drying out adequately at a proper time and I’m worried about the plant rotting. I know that after it’s done you have to give it a month with minimal watering but can I repot it into better soil immediately after flowering and water it minimally?
@desertplantsofavalon5 жыл бұрын

Christmas Cactus seedlings can be very slow growing, I have some that are taking a long time from seed, they can take up to 3 months to germinate and then a good couple of years from seedlings to take shape, I bet they will grow very soon for you, sometimes Thanksgiving and Christmas cacti can bloom a bit later if the temperature is cooler than the year before or if it has been moved to a different position, my Thanksgiving cacti indoors flower earlier than the ones in the polytunnel, I have had some flower earlier for no reason though and even in the middle of Summer as well as Winter, I think our plants have minds of their own haha, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

@desertplantsofavalon5 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul :-D it may take a while before the rd colouration on the leaves goes back to green, but if your plant looks otherwise healthy and flowers well, I would not worry too much, check that the red colouration is not stress from underpotting or not enough watering though

Thanks for the reply. Since I last posted I put him out on a warm rainy day and the leaves are plump and otherwise look really healthy. oh my gosh i just love you to death i been on this indoor cactus, succulent kick for about 2/3 mounts not knowing a thing about succulents or even cactus when i first purchased the ones i bought expect "ewh look these are on sale" i for sure overwatered them with little to no light at all. So i started researching succulents and how to properly take care of them indoors.needless to say they all died except for the jude. of course I couldn't let them defeat me so I had to keep buying more.then I saw the Christmas cactus plants at Walmart. I had no idea that it was even a cacti plant (they're not very good with keeping tags in the plan) i just knew it had pretty blooms on it. and I had to have it.I could tell that there was two different types of species of the plant. I didn't know what was what I just knew it had pretty blooms i ended up getting both one had pretty blooms and the other one that looked pretty healthy with no blooms.this was more around Thanksgiving time. I did my found out that there was the Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus shortly after I had brought them home the pretty one with blooms did start droping them about a week later and I couldn't and still can't figure out why it said to put them in complete darkness for 16 hours so my craft room is a bit chilly but not too chilly, I put them in there at night with my poinsettiasso they said those need complete darkness aswell. when the blooms start do i put them in complete darkness overnight.they are both still alive and doing very well it just doesn't have blooms is there any tips that you guys can give me so my Christmas cactus will bloom and stay bloomed beautifully longer than a week???once the blooms have already started do I need to keep them in complete darkness at night time?and with that being said so the one where the blooms have fallen off I should keep stored in darkness and not water for a month???
