Here's a little tip for when you want to water a plant heavily, but don't want water on the floor. Back when I was using tap water for my plants, my local tap water is 325ppm. If I had kept a mature plant in the same pot for several years, the soil became overloaded with minerals, particularly lime. (What English gardeners call chalk.) Eventually, the plant would stop growing because it was getting too hard for it to absorb minerals from the soil. My cure for that was to run about five gallons or more of water through the soil to flush out the excess minerals. Naturally, I didn't want to let the pot stand in water for any length of time, so the idea was to have the water run through the soil and right out of the drainage holes, so, I invented my watering station. I got a two-gallon bucket with a lid. The bakery in the grocery store where I worked got cake icing in these, so they had a lot of them on hand and gave them away free. I took the lid to my drill press and drilled a whole bunch of 3- or 4-mm holes in the center of the lid about a centimeter apart. I then got a five-gallon bucket, also with a lid. I set the five-gallon bucket on the floor and set a small turntable on top of that, then I set my 2-gallon on top of the turntable with its holey lid on. When I wanted to flush out a pot, I would set the plant on top of the lid and begin slowly watering it. As the soil became saturated the water would run out the drainage holes in the pot, through the bucket lid and be caught in the bucket. The turntable allowed me to rotate the pot, so the water didn't always go into the same side of the pot. It was not possible to overwater the plant this way, because the soil can only hold a certain amount of water before any excess drains away immediately. When the bucket was close to full, I flushed it down the toilet. If I had a garden, I would use it to water my garden. Depending on the size of the pot, it might have to empty the bucket three or four times. I used a white bucket and would check my progress by the color of the water. When I started the water would run out the color of a cup of tea, and I would stop when the water was nearly clear. When I was finished, I could clearly see and feel the difference in the soil. It was darker and had a much better texture. The difference it made in the health of the plant was soon visible. Since I stopped using tap water, I don't need to flush out my soil anymore, but I still used the watering station to water many of my plants. particularly plants that want very dry conditions. By the way, the five-gallon bucket does not go empty. I use it to hold my supply of vermiculite.

So happy you enjoyed the video Daniel :-D I know that our Thanksgiving cactus can really use a lot of energy up when they have been flowering and they often can stay a bit shrivelled for a while afterwards even when we have watered them, they often have a bit of a rest after flowering and can refuse to take up water for a while, but soon enough they will start to wake up again and then come back into life after a few weeks of a bit of a rest after flowering, here is a link to a video I have made on 'Why your Thanksgiving cactus goes limp after flowering' :kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIvSlZWQoapjhJY thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

Amazing how they plumped up 😮. I have a peculiar situation with my Easter cacti. For years my red one had wrinkled stems. It bloomed year after year but the plant never grew very well and bloomed but not as nicely as the pink one which had nice plump stems. Turns out, this year I have the reverse situation. That is, suddenly the red one is nice and plump and the pink one became wrinkled. I cannot understand what happened 🤣. It is not lack of water and it is not rotting either. A few weeks ago I decided to give the pink one some Calcium and Magnesium but nothing changed. Then I pruned the stems and it seems slightly better. What really puzzles me the most is what happened to the red one to improve after so many years 🤔😜
@desertplantsofavalon2 жыл бұрын
Its amazing how much these plants plumped up after a good watering :-D I know my Easter Cacti really are so odd too, they are so hard to grow I find compared to Schlumbergera the Thanksgiving and Xmas cacti, I have struggled with my Easter cacti for the past few years, they seem to shrivel a lot, and I have a pink and red one too that seems to be so up and down with shrivelling even when I water them well and fertilise, they often drop leaves a lot too, they are definitely much harder to grow and keep than the Schlumbergeras, thanks so much Fernanda for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Portugal for a wonderful weekend XXXX

Can you post me links to your videos that show how to prep Neem oil spray, for pest prevention? I was pretty sure that you had some videos that discussed how to prepare the Neem oil mix spray. I had a few people on a Facebook group that told me I was going to kill all the roots on my succulents and cacti if I used Neem oil. I disagree. I am thinking that they probably didn't dilute it as should be done. Thank you for all your help Lyn! Your a lifesaver! ❤️🌵🌿

It doesn’t damage the roots to be dried up for so long year after year? Why are you various types of Christmas cactus still blooming in March?
@desertplantsofavalon2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ellie :-D because the Desert cacti store their water reserves in their plant bodies they don't use their roots in winter and they rest their roots, once the watering starts again in the Spring the roots will become active again and the roots being dry for the Winter months does not harm them, I do still water the Christmas and other types of Epiphytic cacti lightly overt the Winter months as they like to be given some water over the winter, the Christmas cacti are still blooming due to the cooler temperatures in the polytunnel making them bloom a bit later than the ones i keep indoors, my Christmas and Thanksgiving cacti I keep indoors finish blooming by the January, but the ones I have in the polytunnel bloom later for me due to the cooler temperatures, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX
