My cactus spends 365 days in a bright room with indirect light and I give it a sip of water once a week - never cover it with a box. It sets buds and blooms without fail every year. When a plant seems happy, I'm adverse to making any changes.

My Thanksgiving cacti have a sweet spot on a window sill and bloom without issues. No need to take them outdoors. However, the Christmas variety I have has not bloomed in about 3 years. This year I got one bloom. I am going to start placing it outside. Great directions in this video! They are clear and detailed! Thank you so much!!! P.S. I am a fellow Pennsylvanian who lives not too far from beautiful West Chester!😊

I have 2 of these plants one I put in a South facing windowsill but noticed the leaves went yellow and wrinkly and dried out looking so I reported, trimmed the roots and put it on an East facing windowsill. I got another one last Christmas and put it in a month facing window amd it seems to really like it there. I wouldn't take kine outdoors as my garden is south facing and is way too hot in summer for these type of plants.

I put my Thanksgiving Cactus outside after your last frost. It is placed in the shade under a tree or a place with dapple sun. Never exposed in full sun. Mother Nature will water the plant through out the Summer. Bring in your plant before the first frost. Cooler temperature will already have set your plant into bloom. My Thanksgiving Cactus is 8 years old. Bought from Walmart now it's two feet wide.

Big thing with bud drop on plants in general is not just letting them get too dry but extremes in osmotic pressure in the plant. In that the plant and soil gets just a little too dry and then you do a really big water, the plant sucks up extreme amounts of water and it goes from almost limp to very turgid stiff and the joints that connect the bud to the stem can't handle those pressure changes and fall off. So as you said it's just about being very consistent with watering schedule when any plant is in bud, and if you accidentally let it go a little too dry don't do a big water, do a half water to ease the plant back into a hydrated state, then water a little again a day or so later to get it back on schedule. I've learned this the hard way with orchids haha. Another trick some longtime orchid growers say can work to trick a plant into cold dormancy for flowering is sometimes the dark and reduced watering alone can do it, but also along with that is some ice cubes on the soil at night every second day for two weeks is the formula I've been told.

Thank you for the video. I live in the Netherlands, where we use Celsius for temperature, not Fahrenheit. So I converted your advices and tips for all the 'Celsius'-people 😊. When the temperature by night is higher than 7 degrees Celsius (45 Fahrenheit), it is save to put the plant outdoors all day and night. In the Netherlands that will be after the 15th of May. Put your plant indoors when the temperature at night is lower than 7 degrees Celsius. To make flowers, the plant needs a 'dark period' The best room temperature for the 'dark periode' will be 13 - 18 degrees Celsius (55 - 65 Fahrenheit) I never had my plants outside, but next year I will give it a try. This year I will put them in the dark in a room with the right temperature, 6 weeks begore Christmas. Fingers crossed that they will bloom.

I also live in Tucson. I have several Christmas cactus also amaryllis that live outside on wooden stands under a huge mesquite tree. They get watered daily morning and evening during the hot summers. I leave them until I see the temps are at 32 F or lower, then they come inside. Usually the cactus have already started setting buds. They stay in until nighttime temps are at least in the 50s. They bloom every year. Where I fall short is fertilizing. This past year we've gotten better at it. I have part-time caregivers that do the watering as I can't go out anymore and sometimes it's difficult doing things by "remote control". The amaryllis have thrived but I don't force them to bloom during the holidays. They generally bloom during the spring or early summer on their own schedule and are putting out baby bulblets like crazy. If I want holiday flowers I have an excuse to buy a few more to add to my collection. It's a win-win.

It would get so big that I couldn't walk around in my room! Of course, I complained. When December 1st rolled around, she would move it to the living room. I’m not very big on houseplants, but this and an orchid are tuff enough to live without a lot of fuss. I tend to forget to water and have no schedule. Neither plant likes a lot of water so that’s ok with me😊. I almost did the Xmas cactus in by taking outside. The orchid is much happier away from south window in middle of room. I have difficulty in finding the right size pot for cactus though. It has always been in a dish type planter. I suppose I could cut it to fit a deeper pot. Not sure I want it to be tall. I don’t know anyone who needs one and already have a second from trimmings and will just dispose of the extra. Not a lot of space here and after the drought here and outside gardening I’m about done. We do like these two plants though as they bring that cheer in winter we all need. They both flower when they want and some again later. The cooling down explained why the cactus always starts to bloom on the window side. I always thought maybe light and still could also be a factor.

wow. this is very helpful. I've grown christmas cacti over the years but recently in a hit or miss not knowing why some years I do little to fuss over them and they bloom, other times I repeat the same and the buds fall off or they fail to form at all. I have been growing them under lights recently because outdoor pests have been an issue. This change seems to have created unintentional consequences. The lights are two-fold problem: Too much light and too warm ! I grow them right now under the same conditions I have for my desert succulents which are thriving, blooming & without etiolation. I knew the cactus was tropical and assumed hot, intense equatorial sun at least 12hrs a day, year around but I didn't didn't realize shaded understory. I also read that they needed to dry out before each watering which improved my success as I previously had kept them a little too damp. The temp under the fluorescent grow lights is a constant 80F and are on timer for 12 hrs a day, year around. Too hot, too bright. I'll move my cactus back to a northern window in the living room where the change in the longer nights are approaching and where the temperature is around 65F in winter. In previous seasons that was unintentionally where I had it very successfully blooming but somewhere along the way I feared that I was jeopardizing this success by placing it in a too cold and dark location and moved it to the the succulent shelf. Good intentions never go unpunished. I'm in Washington State 6A. Thanks for the help!

My Christmas cactus was in my kitchen getting sun from the afternoon sun - stayed green - when spring came around late April, I placed it outside in direct sunlight ALL DAY. Leaves starting shooting out all over.

I couldn't figure out why no flowers or thriving since I had both beautifully with all of mine some years ago. I moved and have put them by an east window that unfortunately has a large outside light that comes on by itself at dark. Also heard awhile ago that they like to dry out between watering. Stopping both immediately and hoping for beautiful thanksgiving & Easter flowers again. Thank you so much.

As long as they are pretty snug in the pot it’s not really necessary to let them get bone dry btw watering

Why is best not to fertilize when the Christmas cactus is in full bloom? I use Dr Schultz fertilizer 1/2 solution each time I watered the cactus. The blooms are loaded and they seemed to be ok. I never heard of cactuses to be in a dark room because I did not know about this. However, it did not affect my blooms. I will try your method to see what happens. Thanks for the information. You have been helpful.
@plantvibrations25 күн бұрын
for many of us, the darkness occurs naturally without any extra needed effort simply due to the longer nights. often fertilizing when in bloom will give the plants a surge of nitrogen that promotes vegetative growth rather than blooms.

I've got a thanksgiving cactus at work which was given to my boss when he opened the business. It sits in the corner near some easy facing windows but in partial shade. It is pretty good about blooming continuously and we often get comments about how often it blooms. The thing I'm stressed about is a few years ago it was reported into a very very deep pot, with lots of empty space. The pot is over a foot deep and the plant base fills maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of it. I'm always afraid to overwater it and have the soil just be too soggy. At the moment it has buds and flowers but some of the stems are breaking off and are shrivelled.
@plantvibrations Жыл бұрын
hmm have you considered repotting it to something more snug? the shriveling foliage isn't a good sign

Like many, I keep mine year-round in a north facing window. Every year it blooms like crazy and I ignore it,except for watering occasionally, year round.

I have several plants I bought small lower cost that way and put in dirt with worm castings and supposedly some drainage but it seems pretty compact but all the plants are still growing months after repotting

I’m doing the very same things with my kalanchoes right now, putting them in a closed closet, for darkness. Will be bringing in my Christmas/Thanksgiving cacti soon too.

I live in Arizona and keep mine in the house all year round. What is going on when a stem gets wrinkly? I dont know if its too much water or not enough. I have learned that little water often works best then soaking. I love these plants so much. My mother in law lives in New Jersey and hers grow beautifully.
@plantvibrations Жыл бұрын
The wrinkles stems sounds like not enough water

One of mine, I think it was the "Thanksgiving cactus", bloomed a couple of weeks ago. My daughter's also bloomed about the same time. I'm in Texas; she's in Colorado. We both have them under grow lights for 12 hours daily. 🤷♀️
