Nice care tips, Danny! And yay for °C! Dendrobium Berry 'Oda' is a selected clone, so it can only have this purple color. Other colors means they're other clones of Dendrobium Berry. And it's a cross between D. kingianum x D. Mini Pearl (D. canaliculatum x D. bigibbum).

Bought exactly this pretty Orchid, but on the pot was is a Miltonopsis- as i looked at home- because she was wrapped in plastic so i did'nt see anything😏 i saw no pseudobulbs😅😁it's crazy how the breeders give them wrong names and shops sell again wrong! I bought her in a cold shop so i will give her time now to slowly warm up over 2 weeks or more from 11 to 20-22 degrees celsius at day and 16- 17 at night. Do you thik this will be fine? Maybe it wil be my luck to bought a Dendrobium instead of a Miltonopsis, because they seem easier. I only found her so cute. I will give her new soil and take a look to the roots after blooming, she looks healty now. Thank you for this informative video, best regards from Austria💐

That is a very nice Dendrobium!!! I had not heard of it before and now that I have I will be watching to buy one. I can only think that if Den. biggibum can be bread with Kingianum then maybe other types can also be mated with it. It does appear to be a very tolerant orchid and I can only imagine how wonder a large plant of it would be. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this wonderful video, Dani!

thanks for the informative video on caring the berry oda. i've recently received one. in the meantime, some of the flowers fell. i was wondering if it is ok for the plant to cut down the thinner canes on which the flowers were.
@MissOrchidGirl8 жыл бұрын
+simona ciotlaus Hi Simona, never cut down canes if they are not dry, they store water and nutrients and are vital for the orchid. You can cut the flower spikes (flower stems, depends how you like to call them) but not the canes bellow them :) flowers and spikes are not vital for the orchid, so you can do whatever you like with those, but leaves, roots and canes or pseudobulbs are vital organs for any orchid, don't mess with them unless they are infected or dead and you'll be a happy orchid grower ;)

Hi Dani! A few days ago I bought a Dendrobium Berry Oda and while looking for some advice for it I found your KZbin chanel. A really great one with so much information. :) Since I watched some of your videos and heard of removing old leaves on orchids I was wondering if I should also remove those old leaves/old tissue on the Berry Oda canes? What is your recommendation and if so, the best way to remove them? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work with your videos! :) Sabrina

Hi everyone :) These times some keikis are growing on my berry oda. Are you used to leave them on or take off? How long does it take the keiki on mother cane to mature and bloom? thank for every answer. Have a nice day :)
@MissOrchidGirl9 жыл бұрын
Martina Novakova Hi Martina, keikis on top of canes are a very common occurance, they appear when the orchid doesn't get that winter rest without fertilizer. You can leave them on they will bloom next season. If you take them off before they mature they won't do well separated, let them produce a good root system and mature first.

Hi dany! I know this video is old and since you have moved climates but still I have a question. Are you still growing Berry Oda in orchid bark or have you switched to spagnum moss? I just bought berry oda and wondering to which substrate to repot.
@tim_koch14 Жыл бұрын
Dendrobium Berry 'Oda' doesn't mind drying out between waterings, so I'd use a bark-based substrate. If you're in a warm, dry climate and find your orchid pots drying out more quickly than you'd like, adding a bit of Sphagnum won't hurt it. This plant can be shy to flower if it doesn't get a lot of light in the cooler part of the year, but it's quite hard to kill in comparison to many other orchids and house plants.

I just recently bought an orchid on sale. Not the best idea. The roots ended up being very rotten. I was wondering if you had any advice on how to treat this. I've seen your other videos on root rot but my orchid is in bad condition. I think it only has one heathyish root. And all the new root growth is coming out rotten and black. Help! :/ I really want to save this orchid. Could I send you some pictures???
@MissOrchidGirl10 жыл бұрын
Hi, sure you can upload a pic on photobucket, or a different site and send me the link to the pic. What I usually do is spray the roots with hydrogen peroxide 3% to kill off the fungi and other pests, then I stabilize the orchid using a stick, into fresh new media and a washed pot. I place a layer of sphagnum moss on top to retain moisture, or just spray the top of the media to keep it moist. This will promote some root growth. And that's about it :) This is a video on a sick orchid that I had and how I repotted it. The orchid is now healthy and has roots, hope this helps kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKjWg4R9lKtqoKM

I have a miniature Dendrobium Kingianum coming from ebay in the mail soon. It will be going in my new built paludarium, with waterfall, also have a fogger inside, and will be installing a mini fan. The seller said I can attach this orchid to wood,. That is what I would like to do. Is that an idea that will work for this orchid ? It will always be humid in there. I will have many more plants soo as well. Its a 29gal cube, with a glass cover. It will always have some ventilation because of the canisters tubing coming out of the back area, there is a gap.He said its a very easy to grow orchid, even in a paludarium. Oh an water temp will always be at 80 as it has a heater for animals that will be going in later. I would love ur input on this. Thank You Kaye
@MissOrchidGirl9 жыл бұрын
Hi Kaye, ow that sounds like a beautiful project, be sure to send me a pic when it's ready :D yep I think the kingianum will do ok mounted, it's one of those orchids that don't like to stay in soggy media and like ventilation. With the added humidity I believe it will do great, but just try to place it in a bright spot, they really need bright light. Another thing is it will need a quite substantial cool down in winter time and less water to rebloom, just like the nobile dendrobiums, so maybe you could pull it out in winter and move it to a cold room. When the flowers appear you can move it back and enjoy the blooms :) good luck with your project!

Hi Danni, I bought a few dying phal orchids on sale at Home Depot last week and trying to revive them. Most of them have droopy, wrinkled leaves. Some of them used to have flowers but dropped. Should I cut the remaining steak? I've already changed out their media to bark and the current container they're in is the clear ones with good draining on the bottom. I've trimmed their dead root with scissors that has been sterilized. I'm not sure what else to do to to keep them alive until Spring time, since it's winter in Texas right now. They are currently outside on my porch - away from direct sunlight. Days are short & nights are long and humid. Anything else you think I could do to keep them healthy throughout next season?
@MissOrchidGirl9 жыл бұрын
Hi Mui, I think you are off to a good start with your sick orchids :) hopefully you trimmed only the dead roots and not the live ones :) well I think cutting the flower stems is a must right now, to leave the orchids focus on growing leaves and roots now, flowers consume too much energy. I think watering them when the media is almost completely dry is ok for now, they could use some moisture since they are dehydrated. Other than that just patience and just careful that you don't keep them soggy all the time to rot anymore roots :) when new roots start to appear you can fertilize with a high nitrogen fert to encourage growth. good luck!

My Berry Oda is probably my hardiest orchid, and grows keikis NONSTOP - I have to cut and pot the babies all year round or the mother plant gets too bushy!
@jessicahinman13388 жыл бұрын
Hi, I have a den phal orchid that still had blooms when I bought it a week ago, but I repotted it anyway. I was afraid it was being suffocated, because believe it or not there was an entirely different species of plant growing in the same pot with it! There was also a little baby orchid. This pot was marked down from $30 to $5 US, so I figured I'd give it a go. Anyway, because of being in severely compacted moss and with another plant, the roots are very small and thin, though there wasn't much rotting. I cut the rotten roots off, cleaned it with peroxide and repotted in bark chips with just a little bit of sphagnum moss, as it is pretty dry where I live. Now I'm wondering if I should cut the flower spike off so the plant has more energy to grow new roots? Also whether I should fertilize or not? Because even though one spike on one cane had blooms that are now nearly gone, there is another smaller cane that looks as though it is trying to grow a new spike. There is also a 3rd even smaller cane. And then I'm not sure how to take care of the baby either, except disinfecting and repotting it, which I've done. Please help!
@MissOrchidGirl8 жыл бұрын
+Jessica Hinman Hello Jessica, I think you did well even if the orchid is in bloom, roots are a bit more important at this time :) ok so I would cut the existing spike yes, since you say it's almost done blooming all the more reason to let it try to adjust and perhaps grow the other spikes. For now I would try to keep the top of the pot more moist since the orchid has short roots. So I would spray it with water each time it dried. At this point it is all I would do, except offering proper conditions such as bright indirect light, intermediate to warm temperatures etc. The smaller canes might not bloom since they might be seedling canes. About the small orchid, what type is it? does it have roots? a picture would help, so if you'd like just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr, instagram or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :)
@MissOrchidGirl8 жыл бұрын
+Jessica Hinman ooh about fertilizer, no need for it until the orchid starts to grow new canes and roots ;)
@jessicahinman13388 жыл бұрын
Thank you for responding so quickly! After I cut the flower spike, how should I disinfect the end where it was cut? Would the peroxide work? I know you have a video about using cinnamon for such things, but I don't have any, and don't think I want to use it. As I have a skin allergy to cinnamon and sometimes the smell of it gives me a headache. As to the baby, it does have roots, but they are small and thin like the mother plants. I will attempt to get a pic uploaded to share.
@jessicahinman13388 жыл бұрын
Also, right now the top of the media is dry but the bottom isn't. I put ventilation holes in the pot, just like on your videos and it has plenty of drainage holes on the bottom. So even though the bottom isn't completely dried out, should I still spray the top with a spray bottle? I had put a little bit of sphagnum moss on the top of the bark chips to keep it wet, and that pretty much dried out one day after watering. Do you think I should add more moss to the top to help keep moisture in? Hopefully I can get some pics loaded and that will help.

Hello Dani! I left a comment earlier this year on another of your videos, and ever heard from you! Possibly due to google+ settings. I was wondering if you have any experience with Epidendrum orchids? Specifically the "reed stem" variety. I am having a lot of trouble finding any care instructions for growing them indoors, and what I do find isn't the same from forum to forum or site to site. Any tips or videos would be greatly appreciated! I've been keeping this one alive but all I can get from her are keikis :( Thanks in advance!
@MissOrchidGirl10 жыл бұрын
Hi Kylynn, sorry I never replied, I try to reply to all my comments but sometimes they get lost or I cannot reply :( about the epidendrum, I only have one so I am not an expert on them, but from what I know they like bright light and good watering once the media is dry. They prefer airy potting media, so nothing that can compact and suffocate the roots. Why are you having trouble with yours though? roots are rotting? or it just doesn't bloom?
@kylynn2010 жыл бұрын
She was very healthy, everything was going well, I generally let the media dry out a bit before watering. In bark media, no pests as far as I can tell, when all of a sudden she stopped growing and threw up about 6 keikis!! I've read Epis are prone to that, so I waited as long as I dared for them to mature before removing. Two of the keikis are rooting right now in a seperate pot, and look healthy, but the mother plant just had too much stress. I'm sure I can get them healthy again; which is what I'm focusing on rather than blooms. I'm just wondering if they're like dendrobiums, where they have very specific growing vs blooming seasons and if I maybe messed up on that not knowing the info myself. I also have supplemental grow lights for bonsai trees at one side of my grow area, and I keep my "bright light" orchids closest to that area to supplement a brighter light without risking the sun burn from the window. Perhaps that's the reason?
@MissOrchidGirl10 жыл бұрын
Kylynn Hill well as far as I know they have a slight variation in seasons, meaning they would benefit from a mild drop in temperature but not as dramatic as the nobiles, which go under 10 deg celsius. I think you should let them have natural sunlight rather than artificial light, the info suggests that they need tons of light and even direct sunlight. As long as the mother plant is not drying or rotting, I think she just needs to regain some energy and will probably produce more shoots. In any case, here is an AOS article regarding their care, hope this will help. www.aos.org/Default.aspx?id=475 as a side note, some articles suggest that high nitrogen ferts encourage keiki production, so maybe a balanced fertilizer would work better in case you were using a high nitrogen one. Good luck!
@kylynn2010 жыл бұрын
Ok I will try that, thank you!! I wish I could have my babies outside in the sun more, the window they're in is a shaded south and east window, the artificial lights are more for my trees :) still trying to make the outdoors "safe" for them, the winters here in central Canada, we get so little light, and in the summer it can get up to 35, just scorching!! But this is only my second year with orchids, so still trying new things :) thank you so much for the replies and the videos, they have helped me IMMENSELY and really opened up the orchid world for me!

Hi Danny, recently I've mentioned my den phal's buds blasting, and now one of its leaves is turning yellow too! I have no idea what is wrong! but the temperature in my place does go to 14-16 nowadays at night, and I just give it a bi-weekly watering, as it's all bound in coconut and I don't wanna move it just yet... s1303.photobucket.com/user/Wilson_Lam/media/IMG_7515_zpsnptzlhux.jpg.html
@MissOrchidGirl9 жыл бұрын
Hi Wilson, I would say it's a temperature issue, in my opinion Den Phals are warmth lovers, to the point of losing buds if temps go lower than 18 degs celsius. Bright light and warmth is what they love so try to keep it in a warmer room, I think it will help. Good luck!
