Dean seems like a great guy. I like the way he says 'I think" or "What I do". Odds are Dean knows more about rams than just about anyone else yet he doesn't come off as a know it all. Dean doesn't tell you how you "have" to do it. Another great Co-Op video with lots of great helpful information. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.

Dean, your videos have really got me interested in rams. I hunted around local stores and they said they didn't sell them because they die in our water. I saw some in Pets at Home knowing the internet reputation. Anyway I bought half a dozen and 3 months later I have fry with the dad proudly marching them round the tank. It's a very dirty tank with lots of algae and mulm. GH is over 180, ph 7.5. The adults are healthy looking but small.

We are upsizing a 20 gallon community to a 55 gallon next week and making it a massive live bearer/yo-yo loach community. The 20 gallon will be free space, and I think we are going to try and breed some German blues for profit. It’s $100 for a trio, pray we can keep stable water levels

Water softener should add any sodium to your water, the salt is only used to “clean” the resin that absorb the harder metals, and runs a back wash to rinse the resin and drains in your sump area.

From my experience, if the tap water is too hard, say over 8, almond leaves doesn't work well and neither does using peat. I think buying an RO/DI filter for soft water fish is by far the best option.

I'm currently growing out a large brood of GBR in a clear tote, for a few months now, because the parents did a great job raising them in their 10g but they were too large to remain there. They're all healthy and eat like crazy a blend of live and dry foods. I've kept them at 80F and have wrapped the tote with bubble wrap just to insulate a bit. It has a HOB filter. I feed on and off during the day an average of 3 times. They are too large for microworms. I feed live baby brine shrimp daily. I so love rams and you are right Dean, they are one of the most beautifully colored fish next to salties. It's their personality that is great too. They love to interact with you and are very curious about everything in their environment. They hover and circle inspecting every cranny of the fully planted tanks. I did separate the pair to breed in a 10g as they herded all the community fish into a corner when they bred in a larger tank. They were stressed and never raised anything there. Even in the 10g they never raised a brood until I left the light out on the tank and wrapped 3 sides in black paper. I left a pothos vine in there but removed all other plants. I kept leaves all over the place and an assortment of snails (who they terrorized if near the fry). Questions: What is the best size to bring to my LFS? How many should I bring? (not a super busy store) I've shown them the video of my rams and they're interested in them and will give me store credit. How much $ credit should I expect to get per fish here in New Jersey? I will probably just trade for some more fish that I need here (who really NEEDS fish? I DO>>> I DO!) They have Gold rams! I really love any videos you all put out and have learned to very much! Maybe I'll get a chance to visit some day.
@SugeDay745 жыл бұрын
Just gotta remember if they sell them for $15 a fish you aren't going to get $15 because they have to make a profit along with care for them until they sell. So if they sell them for $15 I'd guess they'd offer you like $5 a fish. But that's just guessing the price per. I think my local fish store sells them for like $20-$25 a fish, but petsmart sells them at like $8. So it's hard to say.

I have a golden headed electric blue ram, 8 rummy noses and some corys in a heavily planted 12g and he seems to be doing ok. It's funny, in the tank he almost gets picked on by the rummy nose and is quite shy but if i reach my tweezers or fingers in he will go for me and his bitten me before, they're more territorial than aggressive so giving them a cave or log works great. One thing to note though is that they are not shrimp safe, nor it seems, are they snail safe, my ram would go for my assassin snail when it was out in the open. Still they are a beautiful little fish with lots of personality, a real 'alpha fish' of a community aquarium. Great vid.

Just wanted to share my experience with my blue rams and see what some people on here have to say about it. I had a 120g lightly planted tank. The stocking was 2 neon blue rams 15 rummy nose tetras as well as a pair of neon blue gourami. the scape contained many caves (6+ as well as scattered long shoots of jungle val to break LOS in the tank) The stocking in the tank was about the same for 6 weeks while the 10 discus I got were in qt. The discus where from 2" to about 3.5". When the discus were introduced they did their discus thing hanging in the back behind rocks and the larger piece of driftwood that made up the centerpiece. Everyone was fine during feeding time. One night (late like 2 in the morning) I walked by the tank to notice the discus quickly moving in the back corner of the tank It being pitch black I knew it wasn't me spooking them so I watched for about 10 minutes trying to figure out what they were doing. I finally turned the light on and to my surprise, the pack of discus had cornered the two rams and pecked them to death. I know this is not normal discus behavior but from what I have read not the first time this has happened either. I just was wondering anyone's comment on what had happened or how I could have avoided this? I have since rehomed all fish except discus and converted the tank to a bare bottom.
@melbingham75375 жыл бұрын
Kyle Cude my experience with discus is years out of date but I did have two large wild caught discus in a 55 gallon community tank. While I never caught them in bullying behavior I did find that they were nighttime predators. I kept a nice school of cardinal tetras and they kept disappearing. Anywhere from one or two up to ten in one week. Finally I caught them. Neons and cardinals would sleep on the gravel when lights were off. The discus would swim along and vacuum them up. Neons were very inexpensive back then but cardinals were not. I switched to neons and wrote them off as live food.
