'NEW IMPORTS' / 'SENT BAREROOT', these are terms used by nurseries outside of the country that we grow in, ie #Brazil #Ecuador #Thailand etc. #NewImports is what nurseries within our territory will use to describe the possible condition of the orchid listed. #SentBareroot is what nurseries will state when we order orchids from overseas outside of our territory. Either way, the orchids will be weak, possibly with no viable roots and they are in desperate need of immediate and long term attention. In this video, I explain what I do to help these orchids on to the slow road of recovery.

HI BTB 😍💐 I appreciate your feedback and thank you for commenting, watching the video. I am editing a video atm, that has to do with some of these, if I remember correctly, and they are about to be first time bloomers (not all, but I am happy with the progress 👍🏼) AfriOrchids, here is their web page afriorchids.co.za/ they are excellent at replying to any queries and they do have shipments going to the US. I do not know their timing, but ask them to put you on their mailing list, and they send out their catalog early enough to place orders, so when it comes time to ship to the US, your personal order will be included. If you have any difficulty with replies, please let me know and I will see what I can do at my end to get you and them connected. Hope you are having a great Friday 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Today is February 8th 2024. I just received a Cattleya Mossiae that was in a 4 in pot filled with loosely packed damp to wet sphagnum. If this was something I had grown from a flask it would probably be in a 2 in pot. After picking the sphagnum away I have found a very mushy, stringy, root system that I doubt is doing much of anything for the plant. I'm going to try this soak and dry method, and keep my fingers crossed.

You are right that you can wait to repot bare root orchids. One, it's good to know that they will survive before repotting. My success rate isn't great, especially with imported phrags. These have absolutely no storage units. I'm about 50% success rate, not great. You've done an amazing job reviving those little orchids back to life. It really shows your dedication and experience. Continued success, Nina!

Hi there 🤩💐 so good to see you again, thank you for being here and leaving me a comment that confirms how I feel about taking care of struggling new imports! The monopodial orchids would be a tough one to get through, that is for sure, especially as phrag roots don't want to be exposed to light for any length of time. AND add to that that slipper orchids are slow growers, ... it is a tough challenge, indeed! Makes the recovery of these guys look like child's play in comparison. Thank you for taking the time to watch, Res!! Have a wonderful Saturday! 🌸

Great video! I end up potting them up in moss or something (wet dry cycles) till I get new root tips then I'll get them in their semi hydro. Good point with hydrating the leaves. Ill spray them! The summer is approaching, and we regularly get 70% humidity, it'll be less of a factor. I'm looking forward to seeing these grow for you. I know it's a battle with these imports! You take care of your babies so well 🤗

Nicole, thank you so much for watching this video as well! 🤗💐 I would not be so concerned potting some of them up if I had 70% humidity.... but like this.... I am not comfortable, especially not with the liliputana and the carmidii... (wonky growths don't help much either, so there is that for me to wait for.) If this gets old (because it is now week 2 of doing this) then I may put them into one of those bottle sleeves, which I did with my philippenensis. For now, I can fiddle and I am loving it 🥰

🌸🥷🏼 Sherrii San, hi 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 you are very welcome! I used to place an order with Floralia in Brazil 1x year. This is the only way I could find the rupicolous laelias that I could not find in Europe. I recommend that you stay away from this nursery, 🌸🥷🏼 Sherrii San. MOST of the little laelias are in terrible shape, some I could pull through and they are doing really well now, but others, they arrived with nothing to work with, or were completely chewed up etc etc. Now, many times you can either get a refund, or you get a replacement. However, the customer service of Floralia is absolutely terrible! Paid orders were missing orchids and only after months of being left in the dark, or in hopes of getting them shipped after the fact, was I told that the orchids I ordered were not available anymore. Then, it took another year or so to get a refund. My attempts to place an order using the owed money as credit and pay the balance etc. were met with cold shoulders and a no. So I kept on insisting for a refund. I eventually got a refund, but my goodness, the whole experience was terrible and I have never ordered from them again. I was not a one off customer. I had been ordering several years in a row. Just insulting, so, I don't recommend this nursery anymore just because if things go wrong, the whole experience is not worth the hassle. I am glad though, that you are inspired to proceed with your project and hope that you will have a wonderful time making it a reality 🫶🏼 thank YOU for watching and for being here! I hope you are having a beautiful day ❤️🌸

It is all in the details! And you have described it perfectly once again. I wish I had known this before potting my bare root seedlings as they would not have struggled for over 18 months and I could have saved myself much heartache! I did something similar, albeit for only 3 days to the last bare root orchid I received (Den Second Love - freebie) and of all the bare root I received- it took to my environment and media choice the quickest. Thank you again for another amazing video ❤️😍🤩

🌸🥷🏼 Trish San! Hi 🤩💐 there is Cousin Itt heart of blooms 🙌🏼 the inspiration for this video came from our email communication and seeing comments that the orchids look in really bad shape when they arrive, and they do, which can be daunting. So, I appreciate your feedback that this was helpful ... IF you get your blumensheinii from Floralia or any other orchid that looks really rough and almost dead, then, this video intends to bring peace of mind. I have just received my replacement sanguilobia but it is too windy to film today, so .. they will have to wait until such a time that the wind dies down. I am going to film this unboxing, because, the sanguilobia I bought from Floralia last year, cost me US$15 and the one coming from the European nursery cost me 20, as did the 2 others that I put into the box. This unboxing is going to be interesting for me, because, I want to know if their sanguilobia is a year old (I think I can judge how long it has been in the nursery care or if it was a Fresh Import - first of all, it was not listed as a fresh import, but not all nurseries announce fresh imports on their websites) or if it is a fresh import, then... well, they have that mark up, which is understandable BUT, is the quality better for more money? I am curious and look forward to seeing what I find 😬 also the Floralia sanguilobia from last year, although it had no roots, it was a large plant that only needed to find it's mojo, which it was doing for the past months, until King 🤯 Thank you, again, for your kind feedback, Trish! Have yourself a great day 🙌🏼🌸🥷🏼🥰

They did all came in fairly good roots. I did pot them on 2nd day I'm hoping they will be alright but they are showing a little of dehydration now. Thank you for sharing your care tips much appreciated Nina... Have a good evening stay safe and happy growing : ) Reah

HI Reah! 🥰💐 if they have great roots... off into the pot they go! Absolutely, and I would do exactly the same thing. The dehydration is possibly because the roots are objecting, or they are loosing too much through the leaves. So... give them that wet dry cycle in your bark media, but keep using the seaweed and CalMag and flush after having soaked them in that. If you do not see any improvement, leave them in the pot, but, give them more humidity. 🤞🏼 Thank you so very much for taking the time to watch, Reah!! Have a wonderful Friday 🌸

HI Brenda 🤩💐 I was an eager potter upper for a few years, and just loved to settle them in asap, but I have come to realize that I can do better by helping the not dehydrate through the leaves while sitting in the pot, by just leaving them and dealing with the on the daily. This is the first time, though, that I have different cases and cannot do my potting up marathon. This is now an orchid by orchid basis as to who goes in a pot and when. Thank you so very much for taking the time to watch and that your seedlings will bounce back when they get their daily soaks for a while. I hope that you are having a wonderful Friday 🌸

🦒🦒🍀🌞🎠!!!!That is a great, great referance vídeo. It really is helpfull information as people can go a step ahead and learn faster without having to learn from their mistakes. I wish I had this vídeo to look for when I got my lucasiana as I had liitle experience at the time. The poor thing has been in a limbo for years, pushing new growths but no roots. With your method she would have not been so set back, beyond the point of recovery. When I bought my division of Laelia crispata from a brazilian vendor at and orchid fair two years ago I also repotted it too soon I suppose. It had a few viable roots and it seemed to do well at first but it started to go downhill the first year. And then I kept it bare root all winter long in a glass vase, keeping it humid and when roots started I gave it a dry/wet cycle everyday and finally it grew two new growths. It was just in time, the older PSB were starting to shrivel. Although I acted in time my crispata was set back, which may not have happened if I had done it correctly the first time. Thank you for bringing up such topics and sharing your experience. Have a great day amiga mia, sending you much love ❤️🤩

I am happy to stick to the New Imports care, as opposed to messing around with an already established orchids and kill those 😑 eventually, I will need to replace coccinea, but, for now... as there are more coming in the mail, I will wait and focus on cernua to make sure that it doesn't go the same way as coccinea. Sounds like you have your crispata back on track. See how green my crispata is? I am so curious to see flava and crispata bloom 😬 my rupicolous laelia list has flava / crispata together.... as many other names ... lots of double can be bought with these little guys because the names are like a merry go round 😅 Last night I went down a rabbit hole to check my list and compare it to info on the links that I was given... I was cross eyed afterwards 🤣 Thank you so much for watching, amiga! We are expecting rain, for the past 2 days, but nada... so I did laundry last night in the hopes that it would trigger rain. I have been given an image that shows when electricity is most expensive, and doing laundry after midnight is the cheapest time. All these things may be good for my insomnia. I may start cleaning the house after midnight 🤔 Have yourself a great Friday, vecina favorita!! Much love to you and your's! I hope that all your family members are doing well 🙏🏼❤️🙌🏼🌸

@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 9 ай бұрын
Hi Sandie 😍💐 I hope you are doing well! The bulb can recover, if there are other structures that can help out? Do you have a new growth starting? If it is a single bulb, it can complicate things. I have several oncidiums affected with some kind of disease, the pest is no longer on the orchid, but the pseudobulbs shrivelled as a consequence. I do have new growths coming, but it is touch and go with these. Seeing as I have a semblance of roots, I do think there may be some recovery, but I have several pseudobulbs the orchids can work with. All that, to say, a single bulb can be tough, does not mean in cannot be done. (depending on what orchid it is as well 😬) Doing this method with a bulb is not the same, because there is no foliage for the orchid to absorb any nutrients with. Unless, your bulb has some leaves, then yes, give this a try. Let me know how things go! Thank you so much for watching, Sandie 🫶🏼 have yourself a beautiful day ❤️🌸

Good morning once again! When you're speaking of dehydration and all the root problems, I wonder if leaving them in a "regeneration chamber" (i.e. some closed environment with high humidity) would help the same way in the recovery. I know you talked about humidity tent, but that's a bit different, much bigger space. That's what I tend to do with rootless orchids. I just put a bit of tea water on a gravel and close the "bottle"... usually I even prop them in the air so they don't directly touch the "wet" gravel with their bulbs. And this is why I'm afraid of imports, I'm into miniatures, cause I don't have that much space and like to make my own pots, so I don't really have very big ones. And they tend to have such small storage organs, so fragile. But so far I had success rooting with the high humidity. Although of course that presents another problem when you pot them up and the humidity harshly drops for the leaves. Unless one has higher humidity or introduces them to the lower humidity gradually. Need to think some more on this :) Thank you for this, have a great day!

🌸🥷🏼 SnowDragonka Hello again! What a pleasure 🤩💐 yep... some small makeshift container that allows for air flow will do nicely as well, with caution, because no mold or fungi should develop... they don't need anything attacking them while they are in this state. The little cardimii is the only real headache IF I cannot get those wonky new growths to grow upright. It shows me, how long that one has been laid down on a bench, out of it's pot and the new growths went for where the light source was. Shame! 🤞🏼 but they have plumped up to some degree, since I unboxed them, so... I am hopeful. I love my little soda bottle sleeve thing that I have around my Ceratostylis philippenensis ... that is working really well, I carved out an opening and spray it daily, it has lava rock on the bottom in SH set up and the rest is also akadama, and the little thing is going nuts! 👍🏼 that may be an option for some of the little laelias when the time is right to pot them up, but the weather conditions are a little harsh outside. The wind today has dropped my humidity to 13% 😅 kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5SreoilhtWNp68 if you have not seen this video, Timestamp 09:16 you can see my philippenensis and it's cheap little contraption, but very effective 👍🏼 Thank YOU so very much for watching, 🌸🥷🏼 have yourself a great day as well 🥰🌸

@@NinjaOrchids I find I don't have problems with mold in the inorganic setups. With soil or bark or moss oh boy, instant mold infestation. Problems of growing inside without a fan. Kinda why I like inorganic substrates even for normal plants. Can't have much on my balcony, even now we get below 9C at night. But I agree, the little dome thing helps a lot with overly harsh water losses due to transpiration. Will be glad to see how the laelias will fare in the future, the new growth should at least partly fix itself due to light exposure, but yeah it's annoying. It grew so low and so perpendicular, will be a long way to correction. Has to grow a bit to achieve that. We'll see in the next update I guess :) Take care!

In the case of Floralia to Europe, they handle all that and there is no extra charge as per what is on the price list, which they send out every January. I don't know how they do it, but, what is on the price list, +shipping, which is not ridiculous compared to some nursery shipping costs within Europe. Grazie Nina. Tutto molto chiaro. Grazie e a risentirci
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids Жыл бұрын
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids Жыл бұрын

Ti saluto nuovamente e buonanotte
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids Жыл бұрын
OH! OK! 🫶🏼

I have no space for any more orchids 🙄 so won't be ordering any like these soon but if I ever get some space to do it, this looks like a great project. Sorry if you have answered this already but how long would they take to first, recover and grow normally in a pot and second, flower? Thank you!
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 3 жыл бұрын
Julia, hi! 🤩💐thank you so very much for subscribing! I really appreciate your support 🙌🏼and, thank you as well for your kind feedback and for taking the time to watch. They recover relatively quickly when doing the dunk and dry rehab regime (if I remember correctly, the unboxing and this follow up are a week apart?). They can be potted up straight away, if, there is enough humidity in their environment so that they do not loose substance in their leaves because of dehydration through them, due to lack of roots, or next to no roots. For me it is easier to rehab them while out of the pot, because my having to mist them could cause bigger problems (rot of the little structures) than being able to let them dry out on a tray. I could pot up some of the ones with active roots (even though they are not long) IF I knew that I did not have to move them. Find a place for the pot, and flush in situ without any jiggling. That is my major problem, which I need to find a solution for, and then I can pot them up. They come blooming, size 😅 but when they will bloom will depend on how quickly they acclimate. Coming straight from the other side of the world, they will have the orchid jet lag for at least a year. I have already potted the crispata up, the dendrobium is next, but.... unless I can safely position the others into a pot, so that they don't move around and abort the little roots they have and avoid any wind blowing them around... it could take several months. (or until the novelty of dunk and dry wears off 😅) If the factors that I don't have, are made available, then... within a week one can pot them up and treat as normal. Paramount is to not jostle them around once they are in the pot. I hope I am making sense 😬 I started with these little guys because I had no more space, but lots of little blanks to fill in between large pots... that turned into a craze and now I am obsessed and want all the species 🤦🏼‍♀️

Inmaculada 😍💐hi!! Welcome! I have not seen you here before, I believe this is the first time you are commenting? I feel as though I have seen you in my comments before, but just in case this is your first time, I do not want to miss the opportunity to extend a warm warm welcome! I appreciate your comment and your time watching the video! I recently posted a video with some tolumnias in a very bad way for other reasons, my mistakes, but maybe if you watch the decisions I take and how I have them set up now to hopefully get them to recover, you can compare the status of your tolumnia with what you see in the video, see what I am trying to achieve with my ICU set up and make a visual decision if that would work for your's as well. I would be very careful to soak a tolumnia entirely the way I am doing it in this video because of the tight structures around the base. It can be done, but it is risky if the tolumnia doesn't dry out fast enough. But then we don't want the tolumnia to dry out that quickly because we are trying to keep the leaves from drying up as well, so... kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaCsiqWBgNGWhpI here is the link and let me know if anything you see is helpful. 🤞🏼 I sincerely hope so! 👍🏼🫶🏼🌸

Hello and thank you very much for answering so quickly! I have made several mistakes, and not for the first time. The first, to buy an orchid of which I had no idea. While I have been informing myself, the orchid was deteriorating. Being mounted on cork, I have pulverized it badly, because water must have fallen on the base. I've seen the video you suggested and I'm going to give it a try and see how it goes. All the best!!

They look nice and clean and shiny now, the milleri looks to be doing leaps and bounds better. Excellent discussion on rehabbing bare root imports and this will be invaluable for those that are not used to dealing with them. Now I am more prone to just soak them and then pot them up in some sphagnum (smallest possible pot) and perhaps that is why I sometimes have problems. The Oncidium Ecuagenera Dream just rotted both new growths that it came with. That could be my mistake potting it up so soon or shipping damage. The one was suspect coming out of the box, I'm not surprised it rotted but the other one looked OK. I assume the plant will try to push new ones to replace them and, if not, oh well. I wasn't even sure it would grow here anyway (a lot of cool growers in it, only 1 warm grower). I'll just watch it and see what happens. I bought a seedling Dinard 'Blue Heaven' today. I wanted to buy two other orchids but I wasn't fast enough on the draw from the supplier, they had only 1 each and I missed out. Oh well, I suppose a Dinard will have to do, even if it is a ways away from blooming.

Don Miguel 🥰💐 what a difference a little clean up makes, and a week in dunk and dry treatments. Still, I am very hesitant to pot most of these up. I will tackle the crispata and the dendrobium. I hope that I can get that done today some time. I think, the bigger the orchids are, the more forgiving... also ambient humidity makes a huge difference when potting up after a day of two of arrival. I wish I could get these guys 'in the ground' all at once, but I think that it will be a staggered process. Dinard 'Blue Heaven'!!! 🤸🏼‍♀️🤸🏼‍♀️🙌🏼 would you send me a pic of the size of it as a seedling? I was fortunate to get a blooming size one, but would love to see what it looks like when it is a little one. I think they mush look so cute 😅 I am getting the feeling that, I don't my seedlings to grow up 😅 Last night I went down the rupicolous laelia rabbit hole to see if I can consolidate my list, also because of the names changing, just to make sure that I don't have doubles on my list because of that. So... I was a bit cross eyed after that. I don't want to be caught out buying doubles simply because one is a syn of the other. What a nightmare 😅 Thank you for your kind feedback, Michael! Really appreciate it, coming from you 🙌🏼 I hope that you have good things going for you today. Much love ❤️

My newly imported orchid has no roots at all. Previous research has revealed a method close to this one. However, the grower recommended a water culture method where the vase r jar is filled with water around 1/3 of the base. Then the orchids r placed in the water for 10 days. I think I like the fact that the plants r dried out as part of the process. Thanks for sharing.

HI Diana 🤗💐 welcome! I have not see you here before, so... first of all, a warm warm welcome and thank you so much for being here, I really appreciate it 🙌🏼 ooohhh, that would make me nervous to have anything bare root exposed to water for such a long time. Not saying that it does not work, clearly it worked for someone, for them to recommend it, but I would be very nervous about that. What I do is a little bit more laborious, but I feel much safer doing it this way, because, I can get distracted and 'forget' the orchids and boom... damage done. Tipping out the water, is quick and I don't forget that. Meanwhile, I also keep these kinds of orchids within my line of vision so that I do not forget to tip out the water. It can get a little hectic in the orchid hobby and attention is redirected very quickly, so... dry is not going to harm orchids in this state, but wet over an extended period of time... that is dangerous. I am glad that the information in this video resonates with you and I hope that you will get your new orchid to throw out roots soon 👍🏼 thank you so much for watching and once again, welcome 🤗🌸

What can you do with an orchid that has no roots AND desiccated leaves? Right now they are sitting on moss that has been soaked in cal mag and seaweed, which seems to be promoting root growth but doing nothing for the desiccated leaves. I also have the container sitting on a heating pad on low. Forgot to mention that the 3 orchids are phals.
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 3 жыл бұрын
Barbara! Hi 😍💐 with phals in rescue mode, from what I am understanding you already have a little root growth on the way? Do NOT fertilize and when you can, change the sphagnum moss out for clean moss. Or... how long has your sphagnum moss been in the set up. It is paramount that you do not let that moss get acidic or accumulate salts. New roots will burn. I would keep the moss damp, but not with any supplements until the roots are well into the moss. In the meantime, you can soak the leaves of the orchid by suspending them into a vessel (upside down) that will hold the leaves in the water, without submerging the crown. Every second night. It is ok to soak the leaves all night. The stomata, on phalaenopsis open at night. The soaking water can have very low levels of seaweed and CalMag. To some degree, the leaves will soak up those nutrients, 40ppm seaweed and 60ppm CalMag (mixed together) at 6.3pH. If you are nervous about the soaking over night, try for 2 hrs and see how if you feel more comfortable after a couple of nights. IF you go for 2 hrs, then soak them every night for 2 hrs. An overnight soak, pm to am, soak every second night. I hope that I am not confusing you 😓 let me know if this was at all helpful 😬 meanwhile, thank you so much for watching, Barbara!! 🌸
