Plate load testing involves the increasing loading of a circular steel plate placed on a ground surface and measuring the settlement induced, to determine bearing capacity. The method is commonly used to test working platforms but it is crucial to carry out the testing correctly, to ensure the safety criteria are met.

Thank you for the very informative explanation, it helps get better understanding of the requirements for such platforms

Good explanation but worth recognising that the effective depth of influence from a circular loaded plate of diameter D is somewhat less than that from a track as a rectangular loaded area of width D subject to the corresponding length and load level of the track.

Very clear presentation. Thank you very much. Could we not use the small diameter results to find soil stiffness at work platform, and then use the large diameter plate test to find soft soil stiffness and then estimate the minimum load bearing capacity for even larger platforms? This assumes soil doesn't get any softer the substrate, and the working platform depth is double to the small plate diameter.

Hello! Nice and easy explanation. What pressure should the platform be tested to? FOS 1.5 or greater?
