One thing not mentioned in the video is that once the knife is open, the tip up knife positions the clip at the back, leaving the blade area clear for a secure grip. Tip down knives position the clip near the pivot (and the blade) where it is more likely to affect the grip. I consider this to be more significant than the action of pulling from the pocket.

I prefer tip down, for one main reason. I know a guy who carried tip up and the knife opened accidentally in his pocket, and when he went to reach in his pocket he got cut and needed stitches.
@evictioncarpentry26284 жыл бұрын
So you're not going to do it because your friend is stupid and was carrying it wrong? Good logic. When you carry tip up in the correct pocket for the clip orientation, the blade should be towards the outside of the pocket and its impossible for that to happen...refer to the 4 minute mark in video.

I carry in my rear, strongside pocket. I'm that orientation I have had a tip-up knife open (it's no longer against the side of the pocket) it didn't cut me but it did stab through the pants when I was removing it. I'm with you, I generally carry as it comes from the manufacturer. Learn the tool and it works fine. I've never needed that 0.1 seconds faster deployment, Lol.

tip up vs tip down depends on the knife length and how the person carries. it's almost impossible to deploy the knife if the opening side is facing the outside of the pocket seam. if someone carries this way there's no fear of it opening. plus most modern knives have strong detents. furthermore, by situating the knife where the opening side is faced towards the outer seam, your hand would never be in the blade path to be cut. when i hear stories like that i tend to think he was carrying a very bad knife with no detent, or he was clipping his knife in the wrong way or possibly wasn't using a clip at all. these stories are kind of like "what if the gun explodes, or what if the engine heats up and dies?" neither things will happen if you know what you're doing

you can avoid the whole rubbing against the hand problem by clipping the knife into your back pocket. it's just as accessible and gets in the way so much less often. it's even more comfy sitting as it's not jamming into your belly/side. I've been back pocket carrying for almost 10 years.
@ArenaAccessories6 жыл бұрын
Great review here, man. I honestly don't have a personal preference. Tip up / tip down... both are fine. The only time I had a tip-up carry model open up in my pocket was when I jammed it in my left side pocket. Made a huge slit in the upper jeans pocket area, as I pulled it out. Thankfully I didn't pierce any of my family jewels... I must have accidentally nudged the flipper tab somehow when I slid the knife in, and the detent on this model wasn't strong enough on the knife to keep the blade secure. Now I make sure that I only carry that bad boy on the side side pocket, with the blade against the right seam so that my hand always stays away from the blade.
@kaizoebara7 жыл бұрын
Tip down works better in the back pocket: the blade rests against the edge of the pocket (like a tip-up knife does in the front pocket); from the back pocket a tip-down is much more natural to open, too. So tip-up knives go into the front pocket, tip down knives go into the back pocket. Easy as that.
@VMTDesign7 жыл бұрын
i had my crkt deviation in the tip up position at work. I went to lift a barrel, and poked myself, without even knowing the knife was opened. Now I'm always kershaw tip-down. Like the stong detent with speedsafe imo.

It doesn’t matter. What matters is keeping the blade facing back. So it can’t open in your pocket. The Para 3 has options in this case. A lot of knives can’t do 4 different carries so you do what you gotta do. This whole tip up vs tip down thing isn’t a deployment issue, it’s a safety issue.

I carry tip down. My reasons are my own but I support myself. LOL No but seriously. Tip down no matter what you said about how the blade is wedged during tip up on your pants close murphys law comes into play and the first time you go into your pocket on an open blade and the sharp part is in line with your hand plunge will be when you switch to tip down. I also learned on a tip down Spyderco Police I carried at work that only came at the time in tip down and kind of learned that way so I'm more efficient that way. Coming straight up then forward is faster to me then having to rotate your hand as much with tip up. Also it's ironic that the combat folder Emerson has the wave feature when it's the most dangerous folding knife to use. Think about how most real life fights end up on the ground. Imagine trying to get full blade deployment by dragging it to catch your pocket to deploy yet a 300 pound man is on your chest pounding on you. Those wave features are great but only if you are standing up and have the room otherwise you end up half opening your knife and severely cutting your fingers. All around I love Spyderco's because using the strongest digit on your dickbeaters (the thumb) is the safest and most secure way to open a knife with one hand even over a automatic knife because it's natural and you can feel it without fumbling around for a button a stud or a flipper.

I prefer tip down. I normally do not use my knife as a weapon so rapid deployment is not really a priority. That being said, I am rather fast anyway. I had to figure out different methods because I am left handed and many knives do not even have a left handed option. Finally, when attacked, my first instinct it so use my hands. Most likely due to martial arts training I started receiving at a young age. Oh, and I carry my knife in the BACK if my front pocket, not the front, so tip down actually holds the blade shut, but I have never really had a problem either way.

My biggest issue with tip-down is that I put lanyards on my smaller knives to give my pinky something to hold when I'm opening them, and tip-down forces the lanyards to be shoved into the pocket instead of hanging out of it.

2:05 This is exactly why I find tip down to be superior. I'm right-handed and he is correct. Pull the knife straight up out of the pocket and it is already properly orientated. Then a flick of the thumb stud and your good to go. But to each there own.
@JAB6717 жыл бұрын
I prefer tip up because, to me, that pinch grip necessary to pull a tip down knife out of the pocket is awkward and not as secure a grip. When pulling a tip down knife out of my pocket I always feel like I am going to drop the darned thing either because of only 'pinching' it with two fingers or because I then have to manipulate the knife/my grip to actually hold the handle in my hand. Tip up, draw the knife in a more natural manner that has it already more or less in the palm of my hand as it comes out of the pocket. That is my preference.

Tip down is my regular work folder. I don't have the option to swap the clip. Fine for work but not for self defense. Tip up allows for you stand with your thumb in your pocket and your hand blocking the knife clip. Just like you show in the video. The hand on a tip down has extra movement over tip up. Also as you show you have the ability to get a much firmer grip on a tip up when retrieveing from the pocket. Good video.

for me its purely the deployment. When I first got into knives I never understood the issue as I liked both. The longer I carried blades the more I find tip down to be a pain to deploy. For me its purely a "most knives are tip up so thats what im used to now" issue rather than anything else. Though if I wanted to get all tacticool on it I would point out that the grip on your knife right out of the pocket is firmer and harder to break in the tip up draw. As someone who hopes to never need to get a blade out for defense that isnt really an issue.

A lot of the newer Kershaws only have tip-up carry. While some of the older Ken Onion models only have right-side carry, most do have tip-up options (although they are very low-profile unfriendly - if you look, you'll find a plethora of Kershaw Shallot/Leek/Chive/whatever aftermarket deep-carry clips because the holes for the pocket clip are quite a far distance away from the heel of the knife handle). Myself, as a tip-down guy, I've been getting annoyed with Kershaw/ZT not having tip-down on knives that could easily have them. This is the same company, as you pointed out, was infamous for overlooking options for carry (like with tip-up and lefties). Drilling and tapping holes (which you're already doing) for the pocket clip might add a few more cents to the knife, but it adds so much option and customization for the user. I say, like you, give people the option to carry how they want.

The worst knife I ever wore in my pocket was an assisted opener with a very strong spring and a really weak detent. It did openen a few times in my pocket so I started carrying it in a leather pouch. I did never cut myself with it, but it really isn't do comfortable a feeling then you carefully have to remove a half opened knife out of your pocket.

Here's my 2cents.. carrying a folder knife as a self-defense tool is equivalent to carrying a handgun without a bullet in the chamber. Is takes an extra second after drawn to use when milliseconds matter. I personally carry a izula Esse 2 fixed blade on my hip with the blade facing up for inverted grip. To me this is the fastest position to draw for me. If the blade was down I would have to fiddle with my shirt taking more time then inverted where the blade handle ends at the bottom of my shirt. Dont get me wrong a folder is better then nothing and legal almost in every state and takes more motor reflex to deploy under stress compared to a fixed blade.

At harbor freight there is a knife for 8 bucks (there is also one for 5 but its very bad) the $8 imo is not terrible

Why is it every one of these tip up vs tip down videos never mentions the reason for the choice of tip up could be because it puts the clip in the rear of the knife and out of the way of your front fingers where you control the knife. That is why I carry tip up.
@Lashazior7 жыл бұрын
Don't care either way but I do prefer deeper carry clips or ones with tighter tension. If you can learn how to close a lockback one handed, you can learn how to do tip up or down.

I always carry my knife in my left pocket, all the way to the far edge of the pocket (so as far left as it can go). Regardless where the pocket clip is mounted on the knife, or which way the blade faces in my pocket. (Btw I am right handed) And even when I carry my TI-Lite, even though it makes the pocket deploy thing useless. Tip up and tip down carry is something I literally never think about nor care about. If I like a knife, I'm carrying it. And they all will always go in the same exact place in my pocket. I have not found either clip orientation to be a faster deploy or more convenient or comfortable to use. Personally I think the pocket clip should be mounted wherever the fuck it looks right on that specific knife, period. Also as a side note I don't pull my knife out of my pocket using either of the two methods Jeff showed. I use the side of the tip of my pointer finger to pull up on the bottom of the pocket clip and then grip/flip and grip the knife however is needed to then deploy it (with my right hand). Just thought I'd share my opinion since I probably don't have the conventional opinions or knife carrying/deploying techniques lol.

tip down ,,reason ,, for saftey, as a tip up can snag in your pocket when pulling it out , open and cut you ,,not very likey i know but shit happens and usualy to me ,,so ,,, PS once you are used to it ts as quick to open ether way so whatever floats your boat... its optional not fixed in stone i mean im not like " what you carry tip up you have brought shame on our household and must be shuned and lambasted for your choice " its all good

I guess I'm weird. I carry a tip up, but have a lanyard on it. I'm right handed, and keep it clipped to the outside corner of my left pocket, and when I grab it, I reach my arm around and grab it by the lanyard. Idk if anyone else does this, probably a reason behind that.

Great video. I have removed the pocket clips from many of my knives because they were to sharp or pointed or uncomfortable. Your video and these comments show there is no correct way to carry a knife and you could argue either way for tip up or tip down.

Perfect video, this is exactly why I've been subbed to you for so long. I have the same opinion. I've found it to be no different either way, its literally just a different rotation of the wrist. and it seems like you had the opinion you like tip down better because it just swings in between your two fingers. I think the tip down trend came from knives that have small tails, where it would be more desirable to have that thin end sticking out of your pocket instead of the giant pivot end, you know?

Its funny, my first knife was a tip down only knife, and I hated it for years. Eventually I bought a knife with a swappable clip, and tried to carry it tip up, only to find it impossible to get used to. Only carry tip down now, or remove the clip altogether, although I recently splurged on a leatherman Surge, which I carry in a belt pouch. Yeah I'm weird get over it

I buy cheap knives, and they're mostly tip down. And I just get on with it, I would prefer tip up knife just to try it. But that's the way I run mine. I just get on with whatever the knife comes with
@timbrwolf22387 жыл бұрын
I prefer tip-up in most cases. HOWEVER, I will carry it in whatever fashion allows me to deploy the blade the fastest. Like my Spyderco PM2's..I carry tip-down because the reach to the thumb hole is too slow in the other orientation.
