Love that you've made this PA vid. A lot of tiny bearings and hinges you'd find in daily life are running dry, or with old, degraded lubricant. I'd figure that a lot of "dry lubes"used on road bicycles and MTB's are very good to use too,since they also are designed to bot attrackt too much dirt and become all grimy/gunked up. Now If only I owned a folding knife... Are you going to make some zippo/hot sauce stuff too in the near future,because for me it what makes this channel the holy trifecta.

I avoid oiling my knives because I found it makes the knife pick up more debris from inside my pocket which then leads to the knife having to be dismantled and cleaned out instead of just being able to blow the loose lint and other debris out. That being said I will still add a drop or 2 of regular canola oil from my kitchen in the pivot if I feel it sticking or rubbing at all.

I have an Ontario RAT II that I've been carrying for the past 10 years or so. It's been near impossible to flick open with the thumb stud for a long time. I just blasted out the pivot area to get rid of excess dust, then sent a drop of oil that came with my electric razor down there and boom, it effortlessly flicks open. I'd say it's 95% as good as new. For a 10 year old knife, I'll call that a win. I'll have to remember to do this when it starts tightening up again.

Anything with silicon in it is not a great choice where you expect to want to, or have to, remove it later. Silicon tends to bind with many surfaces tenaciously and, to make matters worse, often tends to migrate. This is why people who know how to maintain electric guitars properly avoid silicon based gunk assiduously. BTW, this also the reason why silicon based life, kind of like we know it (as carbon based), is pure 'science fiction'. The unbinding part, powerful enzymes being crucial as it is, is critical for life processes to work.
@wills.8662
@wills.8662 2 жыл бұрын
@@frederickj.7136 Silicon grease is what manufacturers recommend for flash threads as it does not harm rubber o-rings and if you get a tube of automotive silicone grease it will endure an absurdly wide range and not migrate. As long as you use it sparingly in flashlights it would be a non issue since it would only migrate under ridiculously extreme conditions. E2A for *flashlight* threads Not flash threads

@TravisTLK
@TravisTLK 6 жыл бұрын
For old, cruddy knives I like to oil them liberally, (any oil, not picky) then blow them out really well with the air compressor. Its a quick way to get the gunk out. It also forces oil into places you normally would get it; especially if it's a knife you can't disassemble. This is also good if you're going to store the knife for a period of time.

Singer sewing machine oil and Marvel's Mystery Oil (the thin stuff). Singer is for pivots and bearings. It's really thin while having long term durability. Marvel's is for wipe down rust prevention and general cleaning. It is paint thinner thin and soaks deep into metal without leaving a film. I believe it is mostly methyl salicylate (wintergreen oil). They are a great pairing for firearms and fishing reels also. I clean really dirty knives with denatured alcohol, and use mineral oil on food prep tools.

I’ve been using the Frog Lube grease/paste. It’s not thick and goopy like grease you’d use on a vehicle, it’s got more of a waxy consistency. I prefer running grease over oil because I do not like when the oil runs out of the pivot and gets on the blade, it’s a pet peeve of mine. I would highly recommend it, makes the knife incredibly smooth and the grease stays put. Just my preference.

Here's a simple hack: If your locking mechanism has sliding surfaces like an Axis lock and are exposed to dusty or sandy environments, you can dry-lube surfaces with graphite from a NO.2 pencil. It can help an Axis lock that teeters and seizes up.This will also keep foreign debri from sticking and accumulating on oils. Same idea as graphite dust for lock tumblers.

Knives do not need lubrication. I repeat knives do not need lubrication. Talked with Jim Allen- Three Sisters Forge, Shane Sibert and J Heafner- Heafner Knives and dozens of other knife makers. They all said lube isn't needed. The perceived improvment / performance his relative. Look at slippies, I've got some that are 75 years old and they aren't lubed and work fine. Oil is designed to reduce friction which is heat. Opening and closing a knife doesn't generate enough heat to earrant lubricant. on top of this you have to continuously lubricate the knife because it attracts debris which turns into gunk which hinders the opening at the knife. Now if you have high carbon blades that will be stored for long periods. Properly wipe them down and store them in a gun safe equipped with a dehumidifier. I live at the beach and have never had an issue as to require lubricant for a folding knife .

If you like fancy oils, more power to you. Use what you like. This is only my opinion but, the gun/knife oil industry is a billion dollar business. MSD sheets, many times show there is little to no chemical difference in most of these oils. Coloring and fragrance is about it. In my years of lubing guns, knives, etc. I haven't noticed a ton of difference in oils. I do prefer a mineral based oil many times. I like Ballistol, but other than that, I like the cheap stuff as well as anything.
@frederickj.7136
@frederickj.7136 6 жыл бұрын
Travis, I would be very interested to get your take on the performance advantage(s) of Ballistol vs. the mineral oil on which it's based. I have a spray can of Ballistol, which I've been using where there's a question about "food safe"; but not even the can's label presents much of a case for it, cost & bother-wise, based on an ingredients list. Frankly, I just don't know whether mineral oil does pretty much the same thing or not, and is equally stable long term. I am not interested one bit in 'cheaping out' here, but I would like to know if I'm complicating my life unnecessarily. I do think there is solid evidence that there are better options for the pivot of folders if, for example, long term corrosion resistance is a priority. Ballistol seemed to work well for smoothing the action in the wooden pivot area of my VERY tight new Opinel No. 9. BTW, I think anything that can go rancid in time is kind of nuts to use on an Opinel, for reasons I think are pretty obvious... not to everyone, though, it seems. Thanks.

I am not trying to be a smart ass or anything but I am 52 years old, I have hunted, been an outdorsman/ camping/fisherman and all the things where you would use knives alot, all my uncles and father did the same, I have knives that were my dads and grandfathers and uncles that had been used many years doing all these things kinds of tasks, and old slip joint and other folders and what not that they carried for years in thier pockets, I and they have used soappy water to clean them up after guttting and dressing out tons of various game when hunting (my original buck 110 has seen a truck load of deer and elk field dressing, all those knive can't be taken apart to be cleaned, you just give them a good soap and water cleaning after gutting a piece of game, dry them off and put them away untill next time, very occasionally they and the good old slip joint pocket knife might get a tad of hoppes gun oil on the pivots when you just happen to be cleaning a gun and you happen to think about it, lets face it those old knives some of which are from the 40's that I own you could do no more, and they are still good to go, my point is I'd like to know who started this idea of taking your knives apart and cleaning and oiling so meticulously, and only with this oil or that oil, it seems to be more of an internet/youtube fad for those that seem to have nothing better to do more than a hard and fast necessessity to keep a knive in good useable condition as the tool it is, I honestly think this is where guys get things twisted up quite a bit, they seem to lose the fact that a knife is a tool to do a given job, and by all this taking apart and what not has become more like taking out and fondling their toys from their toy box, fine it's their knife whatever, but to sit back and observe from a distance so to speak it all comes over as rather silly, yes taking care of your investment is not sillk, but some guys go WAY over the top on it.

comparing a slip joint knife to a modern folder is like apples to oranges. the oil you use changes the feel of the knife and on assisted or auto knifes can effect the speed and performance of deployment. for instance i use grease on my friction folder but oil on my assisted knives.

and on a side note, id say that slip joints are actually better suited to long term use, the high tolerances and nature of the lock lend them to effectively be self cleaning. modern knives are certainly overly complex. but we still love them!

Just like cars some people take care of them better than others, I understand what your saying but it doesnt mean its correct...most old slip joints are very tough to get open and closed for that very reason you described...They were not maintained properly...knife people use their knives WAY more than any hunter or outdoorsman...Most hunters use a fixed blade way more than a folder anyway...You can do things the correct way or you can do them your way, whatever works for you "my point is I'd like to know who started this idea of taking your knives apart and cleaning and oiling so meticulously, and only with this oil or that oil," again I see your point but no one is suggesting you take your knives apart every time to clean them, if you clean them often than you may never have to take them apart at all...and Im saying from experience that some oil does in fact work better than other oil...Again same car reference synthetic last longer than traditional, thats a fact... Long story short, to each their own but a hunter only cares if they can still open their folders and if it still cuts things, many of them dress game with semi dull knives and dont know the difference between a good sharp knife or not...Knife addicts care about every detail when it comes to knives...the smoother the better for a folder...and smooth means oiled...

I think that it also has something to do with the cost. A lot of modern knives cost significantly more than knives ever used to and people want to put the extra effort into making sure that their knives are in good shape because replacing one is going to cost hundred(s) of dollars.

I use WD40 because I always have it and don't have to buy an oil specifically for knives that cost more than WD40 that is mulit purpose lubrication.
