When I was 6 I saw someone selling wooden ducks carved out of wood. I went up to them an ask "How do you make ducks out of wood?" They looked at me and said "Well, you start by cutting away everything that isn't a duck..."

The term "whittlin' " always reminds me of the tiny canoes, and little people, that my dad makes occasionally. He always acts like he's not creative but I think it takes quite a bit of creativity to turn a stick into a little man's head wearing a park ranger type hat. The Cub Scouts teach the kids that the area around where they are cutting is the "blood circle" because that's where you or others can get hurt if you aren't being careful. It's a tiny bit dramatic, but it's accurate. It is also effective in conveying the dangers in a way the kids will remember. My dad taught me how to do basic whittling, and he (in his own style) taught what you're teaching here. Long story short, thank you for the excellent knife safety tips in this video!
