That's exactly what I was looking for. Wood carving the simple way like it must have been done 1000 years ago. Being active in viking reenactment I did some carvings but I made some mistakes. Your video showed me which ones. ;) I love that you said "something you'll love for the rest of your life". That's what handcraft is all about for me. It's not making as much pieces as possible in short time. It's concentrating and relaxing, some worksteps even are meditative. Then the result is something to be proud of regardless the perfection is shows. Today perfection is asked for by most people but usually it has no heart because machines did it. When someone asks me "when will it be finished?" my answer is "When I am satisfied with."

Very nicely done my friend, I just made a tool toe last week and I think this is the ticket, personalize it and make it mine. At 9:32, I have done that same design in a leather arm guard for a lady who loves archery, so I made her an arm guard and hand carved the leather, figure wood is the same concept, I like how you glued the paper on, I would have been tempted to do the old school carbon paper and draw it on first I will try your way. awesome - ive been wanting to learn a bit of carving just to add some interesting features to some of my smaller projects and this was very helpful to get the concepts down. Your end product has that awesome "multi facet" hand finish look which is exactly what I'd like to try and replicate Lets get you a nice set round gouges! Probably just a set of 3 would cover everything (inch, half inch or 3/8s, and quarter inch i imagine would cover all use cases). I think that would help on those outside turns as opposed to using a flat bevel edged chisel on those outside rounds. Thanks again for posting this video (+1 sub)

I have a set of 50+ carving gouges and chisels. I more wanted to show how simple it can be done with just a bench chisel. I have a series od carving videos planned here soon where I will show some more things off. I am actually working a on a tool roll right now to hold many of the. that should be out next week.
@erikjoven23887 жыл бұрын
Ah - i see - well in that case its was a good idea to show that it can be done with just a basic compliment of tools.. If you can achieve that look with just a chisel and a plane - there is hope for the rest of us yet!! If you're actually going to record and share the tool " build" that would be great! always wanted to make a new one for my chisels - and I'm sure you'd throw in some cool tips/details!! Cheers!

There is another way to transfer patterns onto your projects. The way it is done is to draw your pattern and either print it out on a laser printer or a photocopier such as one of the old Xerox machines. The next step is to tape it down to the project, making sure to keep the tape from covering the pattern and that the pattern is on the side towards the project. The last step is to wet the paper with lacquer thinner that will detach the pattern from the paper and attach it to the wood.
@WoodByWright4 жыл бұрын
Yep. A lot of people like to use that method. There are a pile of different ways to transfer patterns and it's always fun when people find the way that works best for them.

Hi James - great video! I am new to chip carving but tried this the other day after seeing your video. Your technique works really well, thank you so much! I will say that I tried this with two separate pieces of scrap - one pine and one cherry. The pine was *very* difficult to clean up afterward. The cherry was better, but still not great. What am I missing in the cleanup process? Both of these looked very "rough" and "gouged" afterward no matter how I tried. One hypothesis, I was using a small design (total design was 1-1/2" x 4"), so do I just need to use a larger, more open template? Thanks!
@WoodByWright Жыл бұрын
oh yes pine is no fun. the tools have to be beyond sharp to give you something clean there. the wood just crushes rather then cutting. As to the clean up it will always look that way to you. it is one of those problems that the maker always sees the faults. cleaner cuts just come with more practice.
