This type of carving is my specialty, but I used powertools; scroll-saw, rotary carving tool with flex shaft. I even carved my wife's engagement ring😊 and the box i gave it to her in! Having said that, i have the utmost respect for an artist who can accomplish these designs by hand.

Where do you get those curved gouges that are otherwise flat across the radius? All I'm finding in curved gouges are ones with a scooped or bowled cutting edge.

Hello master, Since my English is not good, I did not understand much of what you said. Can you tell me the most suitable types of wood that are suitable for carving? What is the best type of wood? thank you
@chrispye5149 Жыл бұрын
shahramvedaei8573 - For this style of carving, you need a plain , tight-grained wood. here i am using Jelutong, but you could use, Limewood, Basswood, Brazilian Mahogany, Walnut, Birch - that sort of thing. With open-grained woods, such as oak, the small parts tend to break off, especially where the fibres are short. Hope this helps!

I can not find a short bent skew chisel. Can you post a link to the items you used?
@woodcarvingworkshop3 жыл бұрын
Look for a distributor of Pfeil tools. The short bent skews I'm using are actually very flat gouges rather than chisels, and 5mm wide. You buy the skewed versions of these Pfeil gouges as a pair, left and right. So, you want to buy Pfeil cut '2a/5l' and '2a/5r'.

Great video would love to join, but as a pensioner, it's just too much with the current strain on finances with prices increasing, shinkflation as well with no price reduction often increases as well. With the Aussie $ as low as it is, the exchange price is high for us. I'll keep watching your youtube videos. Would help having a listing of tools here once for those who can't sign up for financial reasons. The last thing I'd want to do is sign up for a month, download as much as I could, and then ask for money back. Wishing you all the best. Have a great 2023 xmas and a healthy and prosperous 2024 New Year.

Could you suggest a beginners wood carving set that's affordable to the average person just starting out?
@woodcarvingworkshop3 жыл бұрын
Bee Bob - OK this is self promotion: I strongly suggest you subscribe to Woodcarving Workshops. There's a monthly option - currently $16 a month; you can cancel after a month. What's in it for you? First, the Beginner's Course, which will get you started with some fundamental carving skills. Second: the course has a big accompanying download and uses just a few really important tools, useful for all sorts of carving, which is what you are looking for. Third: you get to use these very tools and by the time you are done you'll be familiar and confident with carving handling and creating. Four, you can ransack the whole site for advice on sharpening, around 90 carving projects from easy to advanced to challenge you; there are downloads with working drawings and tool lists; you can ask questions etc etc. Lastly and to show my complete personal confidence here: If you don't think that this ends up the best $16 carving investment you've made, write to me through the website contact page and I'll refund your money personally. There you go!

Can I ask what wood you were using for this exercise please?
@woodcarvingworkshop3 жыл бұрын
Richard - Right at the top, text just under the video: Jelutong, a sort of easy-to-carve rubber tree. You could use lime, basswood or any of the harder woods: maple, cherry etc; but not open-ringed woods such as pine.

The cost of subscribing for a month is about the price of a coffee and bagel - you can subscribe for just a month - and explore the 92 downloads currently available for a whole range of projects. I may have missed some details but what type of wood are you using please.
@woodcarvingworkshop3 жыл бұрын
Graham - I'm using Jelutong, a sort of rubber tree from Malaysia. I could have used Limewood (Basswood); both carve easily and take detail. I think a light coloured wood is better than dark because the relief is quite shallow and we need to see the shadows clearly.

What kind of wood is this?

What he's calling a bent gouge the same as a spoon gouge?
@woodcarvingworkshop3 жыл бұрын
Robert - Apologies that wasn't clear. There are 2 types of 'bent' gouge: shortbent, where the bend starts towards the cutting edge, also called a 'spoon' gouge; and longbent, where the bend starts more or less from the shoulder, also called a 'salmon bent' gouge. Here, I'm using the shortbent, spoon type gouge - and very flat - for cleaning up the tight recesses. To get into corners, I'm using a pair of the same, flat shortbent gouges but skewed, to the left and right. Pfeil makes very good ones of these. Hope this helps!

Your version looks better - wider strands, more robust, I think.
@sarwarkamal89132 жыл бұрын
I guess you are making it more complicated and difficult???we can easily use carbon paper under this paper pattern. When we will have the design on the wood by using v chisel as far as the lines are concerned and similarly for the inner space by using normal chisel we can get excellent results. Isn't it.the inner junctions and outer line should be curved at an angle to give it more rustic and antique look.
@woodcarvingworkshop2 жыл бұрын
Sarwar - Well, there is definitely more than one way to do this! - and I'm glad your method gives you satisfactory results. I never use carbon paper because it always seems to leave the wood dirty; also because it's adding an extra step, and with a level of error in copying my accurate drawing. I certainly don't feel my method is complicated or difficult, but then I use these tools day in day out in my carving! One of the reasons I don't use a V tool is because if you look closely you'll see the apex of the V is actually a little rounded, and this can't give the precise junction that you get when chisel cut meets chisel cut. But, as you say, perhaps the softer look is what you are looking for - I'd love to see a picture of your work!
