Great video Zed. Really like Dan’s thoughts on templates for beginners, I do think the discipline of learning to carve to a line as a beginner is worthwhile. This gives ‘real’ knife skill to then develop from rather than the ‘let the wood speak to me’ maxim that can be an excuse for lack of control or knife skills.

Yes, it's a contentious topic when it comes to templates, especially for beginners. My thoughts are that everyone learns differently, and there is a cohort of beginners who it can really help, the caveat being that you don't rely on them moving forward and rather use them as a springboard to develop the core skills ~Peace~

Out of all of Zed's vid's on spoon carving, imo, this one has the most tips and tricks for the actual carving aspect. Dan is an excellent instructor.

As usual you have published another awesome video. I think the idea of learning to use both hands is something as a beginner I was thinking just the other day could be very very very useful. And I think that for beginners should be even easier since we tend to suck even with the dominant hand. Immediately ordered an eating spoon because out of dozens of spoon carvers I have seen, he seems to feel and design his spoons exactly how I like them. Can’t wait to try the lollipop feel he was talking about.

Great point reg using both hands, I was aware to a degree that Dan used both hands when carving, but it was only when we sat down to film that I realised he was so profficient at it! A really terrific video (as always with Zed's stuff - in a tinny weeny way I hate him for them - because I know that once started I'll be stuck in front of the computer, and return - frequently! with no breaks for a couple of hours it like drifiting off to a different world!) Giving me lot's of idea's mind you will I take them up? Looking at all of them and following them on might take me several years - at 75 I'm not sure how long I have left . . . . . . . but by heck I'll give 'er a go! Isn't it nice to see a video given by somebody who actually knows what they are doing and is doing it to help - unlike the usual ones that seem to be saying "look at me ain't I clever!"

Everybody seems to use spoon carving tools made by Nick, but his waiting list is years long. What is an alternative quality tool maybe made in Sweden that could be purchased to begin? I am not looking for a cheap alternative, but for a good quality spoon carving hook.
