Many experts in this or that skill are not nearly as good at teaching the skill to others. You nailed it. The explanations were slow and clear and with minimal wordiness and some repetition to assist retention. And the camera close ups were very helpful. Thank you teacher.

Do you recommend beginners to start out doing an overhead cast vs. from the side? I've heard that overhead casting is easier to learn and it's a little easier to control the cast direction, especially when you're starting out.
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Probably overhead is a good way to start. If your release point is off, the bait will only go too high or too low, but should go into the water. Safer too if you're standing by other fisherman. Thanks for the interest, KPO.

Wait... subscriptions are free??? Ronnie Camaro told my husband that he (Ronnie) could get a special "friends and family" discount on KPO's subscription rate for him. All he had to do was send the monthly check made out to "Camaro's Crawlers" to Ronnie, and Ronnie would see that he got the "special" rate. We thought Ronnie was a nice guy based on his advertisements on KPO, but now.......?
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors4 жыл бұрын
That doesn't sound like Ronnie. There must be a misunderstanding. I wonder if he meant a "friends and family" discount at his bait shop. He told me a while ago he was thinking about starting a buyers club. I bet that was what he was talking about. Either way please take advantage of the FREE subscription to my channel. I will talk to Ronnie and make sure he does right by you. I will encourage him to be sure and give you and your husband a discount at the bait shop. Thanks for the interest in the channel Cindy, KPO.

This is the wrong way to cast. You should be trapping the line against the spool with your forefinger before opening the bail arm. Not trapping the line against the rod handle, as you demonstrate in this video. You can use the same finger to brake the line against the spool before the lure hits the water. Ensuring no bow in the line, keeping a tight line between rod and lure means more hook ups. Less missed bites, and a lot of the time, the Fish will hook itself. You position the bail arm with its curve at the top, not the bail arm roller. Then you put your finger against the spool and open the bail arm. You control the distance of the cast by line braking with your finger. Also prevents the line from cutting your finger especially when using braid. It also eliminates reel tangles by line overrun after the lure hits the water. You are teaching people how to cast incorrectly.
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I know how some fishermen cast this way. I also know smaller handed fishermen that literally can't cast like this because their pointer finger is too short. I personally find it harder to load up the rod on the back cast when casting as you suggested. Thin diameter braid slips between finger and spool too easy when you really want to develop torque and load on the rod on the back cast. I did talk about controlling distance the with your other hand. More than one way to skin a cat.
@baldrickscunningplan61542 жыл бұрын
@@KnettersPracticalOutdoors Guys with smaller hands should use smaller reels. I don't have big hands so I use 3000 size reels. Or use rear drag reels because they tend to have a shorter reel stem. There is a reason why reels come in different sizes. Other guys use their second finger instead of their shorter point finger. That is how you skin a cat.
@KnettersPracticalOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
@@baldrickscunningplan6154 You are right, it is a way to skin a cat. But is it the ONLY way to skin a cat? I'm sure this method works great for how you and many others fish. Obviously you and others prefer this method. But do you really believe it's the only way? And that I should actually remove these videos because the way I'm showing is so incorrect? I have six kids and every one of them was casting a spinning reel by the age of 4. Reel size was never an issue. Do you really think fishermen with smaller hands should limit themselves to only fishing with smaller spinning reels so they can cast them using the method you described? I don't believe that hand size is the only reason they make different size reels. Bigger reels are often better suited for bigger fish. The drag systems have bigger components. Bigger spools hold heavier pound test line much better and they hold more of it. Especially mono with its thicker diameter. I do have smaller reels and MAYBE my kids could have casted them the way you suggest when they were 4 years old. But these smaller reels would not hold heavier mono very good at all. I also keep coming back to loading up the rod on the back cast. I really have tried it your way and I find it hard to keep the line in place on the back cast if you really want the rod to load up. Think of surf caster fishermen. First, they often use very big rods and reels to give better casting distance and it may suit the size fish they catch better also. These reels would often be too big for an average sized person to cast using your method and there is way too much torque on the line during the cast to just press it between your finger and the spool. Now, I don't do a lot of surf fishing, but the principal is the same. I want the rod to load up on the back cast for better distance and I find it easier to secure the line with the method I described. Again, I'm sure the method you mentioned works great, but it's not the only way.
