balloon is most relyable, however I did it with a kite. balloons just go up and up, slowly but they stay up for very long and don't need stable wind. I used a kite but with many kites you are very much relying on a stable wind, such a very basic kite works well and mostly stabilizes itself even in turbulent wind, but it still needs decent wind to go up, and a kite is dangerous and difficult because you need to unwind it slowly. this can be done using a automatic braking system, however it is best to set up the kite just before the storm so that it is already at it's maximum height, doing it during a storm is also possible when mostly auomated but unsafe. drones are quite expensive have a limite range have many problems with winds especially turbulent ones and their RC systems break down during a lightningstorm because the radiowaves from the lightning and discharges in the clouds anywhere closeby will interfere with the radio signal causing you to lose signal and controll. and even worse is that the microchips used in them tend to glitch and chrash due to not being protected against decent to strong emf. you can try to shield the electronics other than the antenna. but the baloon would be the most optimal method, that method is actually that good that if you use a hyrogen foil balloon you can already catch lightning when you are not actively in a storm due to the ionization layers of the atmosphere, since hydrogen foil balloons can go close to the border of outerspace. helium doesn't go as high but is safer. a kite would be the other first option it depends on how many you want it to cost and how much and what material you have. a foil kite is typically very easy and cheap to make. it is kind of something children at at primary school could do during class. as long as the winds aren't to strong you can just simply use aliminium foil for the kites surface area, then on the bottom and edges add some tape, also add some general tape croses through the center this is to prevent rips and to make sure it kind of stays intact if it rips. you can just use something like reed for the wooden support beems and you are done. ofcource all epends on the size. I made my kite around 40cm by 60cm or so in the typical shape. my surface was entirely aluminium foil which was enforced with tape near the edges and like some cross through the center(didn't actually enforce the most outer sides to increase the ion interaction), I added a sharp point also made from aluminium foil this was to increase ion activity and to generate a ion candle(ligth) when used in the dark once high enough so it indicated when there was a strong es difference. the support beams where however actually made out cardboard in a special geometry to reenforce them, this was just strong enough and it didn't need to last long anyway. attaching the wire however required it to connect it to the frame with a decent amount of wire behind that which with a loose bend was connected to the metal so that if the foil moved in relation to the frame the wire wouldn't get lose and so the wire wouldn't pull on the foil directly. btw. I do not recommend to use cardboard in it, in my case it worked but it is a lot more work and gives you litterally only one shot in general, it also isn't that much lighter than light wood and reed likely would weigh less.

I've been within 7 to 20 meters of lightening strikes several times. Maybe it was a fluke, but it really wasn't ever as loud as you might think, about like a fire cracker. The light is pretty bright, might see an after image for several minutes. I don't think I was ever shocked but it is hard to be absolutely sure since it startles me which itself can feel like a small shock. There is a place in the US that studies lightening that does similar experiments. They use a model rocket and fine enamel wire, the kind used in motors and electromagnets. I assume one end is well grounded. Personally I think the drone trailing a wire idea is better. A few hundred meters is probably enough if lightening is going to strike and you can send it up and wait. I think the video tape might work as a conductor although it will catch wind. Probably too much trouble, but it might cool to see if you can light a neon sign even before a strike. Don't forget Ben Franklin had the luck of a fool, one of the first guys to try to replicate his kite in a thunderstorm experiment was killed, in France I think.

We were filming something in a building earlier this year, it was the top floor with only a small thin roof above us. There was a storm going on and then it was calm for about 10 minutes. We resumed filming and suddenly there was a giant bang, the loudest thing I've heard in a long time, and I swear a fizzing inside the room for a split second, like a high voltage corona. There was also a flash that felt like it was inside the room but may have been the fluorescent tubes being energised. We decided that lightning must have struck directly above us and the flash occured at the same time as the giant clap/bang.
@Linus-nq2op2 жыл бұрын
I think this heavily depends on how strong the lightning is and perception (low pitched pressure waves typically aren't perceived that loud, they are rather felt). I observed a lightning strike ~800m away and it my walls were slightly shaking from the pressure. Definetely louder than a firecracker.
@Jordan-tr3fn2 жыл бұрын
one of the loudest thing I heard in my life was a lightning (around 200m from me) all the windows were shaking
@karlharvymarx26502 жыл бұрын
@@Jordan-tr3fn This is sort of a reply to all. i agree the strength of the bolt is probably a factor. I may have been too close to judge since the flash was literally blinding for an instant. The distance different sound frequencies travel could have a psychological effect of paradoxically reduced volume close up where the high frequencies are still loud. (One of my hobbies is making microphones sensitive to very low frequencies. Deep sounds like volcanos, tornados, lightening, large waves hitting land, atomic bomb tests and etc can travel hundreds to tens of thousands of miles.) Anyway, 200m is too far away to observe the less loud effect. i know I have heard some very loud ones at that distance. i tried and failed to put into words the hypothesis that popped into my head while writing this. I might see if i can whip up a computer simulation to make a video to explain.

The foil balloon sounds like a much more stable way to attract lighting. The rocket is a cool idea, and would make an amazing video, but it would be so much easier to just let a balloon hang out until lighting finds it. Love your videos guys!
@deltab97682 жыл бұрын
Plus you could set it up, leave it up, before the storm got bad. Less risk of getting electrocuted if the lightning comes early. I’m not sure how the balloon will fair with strong winds but even if it fails it’s cheap to try again.

Foiled Helium balloons attached at different heights (100m intervals) largest one first, on the same fishing line to capture the thickness of the clouds , then run your earth strap- copper steel wire /videotape to the Thick fishing line, anchored to a washing machine, for best results add a secondary 'diagonal' fishing line facing the on coming winds to support the structure. Make multiple set ups to increase your chances. Weigh all your components and pull strength of balloons to best calculate what strength of fishing line is suited, catch weight in LB's supplied by manufacturers. ( doesnt factor winds horizontal pull strength) more balloons reduce weight but add drag !

I wouldn't condone this for safety reasons, but come to the United States, we get all kinds of weather here. What you will need is a "Severe thunderstorm warning", those storms are common in the Midwestern, and Southern part of the U.S. We even have special radios, that our National Weather service triggers alarms and alerts on, whenever such storms occur in a specified area (or county). Just watch out for tornadoes.😁🌩🌪

When and if you try again then please try to add small sharp metal spikes to the balloon or kite. these sharp points cause much more interaction with the ions which causes it to use the ions in the air kind of like a antenna which makes it attract insanely more electricity and from much further away from it as well so that it is much more likely to attract lightning otherwise any nearby trees around the same height will be a much more likely target, doing this and going higher than the trees should greatly increase the chances. I would recommend a balloon if you can easily make one, hydrogen goes higher and faster than helium, if not then use a kite but you need to add something to slow down the speed at which it unwinds mechanically otherwise it will fall down, kites can lift more weight in general than a small weather balloon and since helium is expensive and hydrogen takes long to generate and tons of energy. so if you want it to lift some decent weight the kite probably is better. also did you measure the tape resistance, how high is it, you might also be able to use a thin wire from a material like wool or just general wire and put it in salt water or cleaning soda water, that way it conducts well and acts like a very cheap water this method is also reproducable with primitive wires on a island using things like gras wire then you could use lightning to start a fire or to try to electro cook something. if you send it through a piece or bar of iron or ohter ferromagnetic material then that metal will turn into a magnet, it should not melt to much to stay as strong as possible so using a big piece of metal or putting it in a bucket of non salt water would help, this because the metal conducts better so the water will act as cooling, keep distance however since it will explode on impact when the watter evaporates.
