This Swarm was at least four or five pounds it was about the size of a basketball pretty good-size swarm. Shook them in a deep nuc and they marched right in one of the easiest swarm shakes I've ever done.

Thank you for the video. My neighbor has hummingbird feeders and I got an email with a photo of a bunch of bees around it. From the photo it looks like feeders have a hundred or more bees on them. I doubt is a swarm. But I'm ready if it is a swarm thanks to your video. Got my nucs out and frames, all set to go. Here in central California, we're in an awful drought. Normally, there is plenty of wildflowers. This year, next to nothing. I feeding last year's honey mixed in with sugar syrup and the new type of soft pollen patties. Thank you again. It was just what I was looking for.

I like that two nucs stacked like that. I will do that..sure gives the bees a holding place instead of just using one. thanks! great video!

How do you know if you caught the queen when you catch a swarm?
@mikeofborg25 жыл бұрын
Very cool. I’m going to do that this year. My friends place gets at least 1-2 swarms on his property from the Hives used to pollinate the tomatoes and melons they grow there. Easy way to get a free hive of bees. The farm that uses the hives is about a mile and a half down the road. They truck the hives in on semi lowboys. The last swarm I saw on his property I was able to pick up two hand fulls of bees with zero stings. They were gentle like your bees. They looked like Italian hybrids to me. Hard to tell at just a glance though.

Hey David, in a couple weeks I'll be setting my hive out to catch my first swarm. Yet I have a new hive and I don't have any old frames with wax or propolis. Question: If I were to just wipe propolis all over the inside and bait it with lemon grass, will this work? Or do I need an old frame of drawn out wax as well?

I got stung on my finger knuckle checking one of our hives this morning. Woer my jacket but not my gloves... thats pretty brave for me. I wasn't planning on having to move the pollen patty though.

By now you know to move slower. Or it was just bad luck and you inadvertently pinched a bee.

@historyhunter52156 жыл бұрын
William Bryan Layton you want to keep them locked in for at least 18 to 20 hours and then obstruct the exiit so they reorient...

@julieenslow59155 жыл бұрын
As soon as he went and grabbed some out of the yard! lol You just must put them in very slowly so the bees have time to move out of the way.

i today watched a video made in probably south korea. they used a bee veil with the hat on it. inverted it and enveloped the cluster then gently shook the bees into the hat. next they righted the whole thing so the veil was hanging down and from a string that was tied to the center of the hat they tied that string to the branch. next they lifted one end of the veil and laid it up on the brim of the hat so that it was like an opening for the bees to find their way inside to the queen. after a time they tied up the bottom of the veil and took the entire swarm to a hive they prepared earlier. it was all so stress less for the bees and so easily done i was like wow. i'm sure that it was not an actual bee hat and veil but it looked similar. they were so gentle with the bees. you could tell they really cared about how much stress was put on them.

If you had a bigger hive not a catcher, it woud be better since the swarm is so big it will be expaned till the end of the season anyway.
