Bass LOVE muddy water! Its not as tough as you think to catch fish when the water is murky. Anglers often lose confidence and begin to struggle when the water turns muddy and starts to rise but its all in their heads. Rising muddy water means more food and more food means aggressive bass. When the muddy conditions arrive this year, you'll be ready!
Don't let water color scare you. Whether your lake is crystal clear or chocolate milk the bass still need to eat. Its all about adaptation and recognizing changing conditions. Don't be afraid to fish aggressively in dark water. Matt's favorite bait in high, muddy water is a spinnerbait. There is no reason to slow down unless the bass won't cooperate. If that happens, we've got a handful of other techniques you can try with confidence.
Below is a breakdown of the baits discussed in the video. All of these are proven producers in stained to muddy water. Don't be afraid to get out there after the next big storm, you might be surprised how many fish are willing to bite.

Great choices for baits in this video! Can’t go wrong with an all white bait when in doubt on what to use. Using those darker bait profiles in muddy water is a good way to go as well, as they will stand out quite a bit. Adding sound and scent are two other things I do, to allow fish to track the baits easier. Good video guys!

Maybe grab a map of somewhere that you both have only been to once or twice and break down where you would start (for the different seasons) at a new lake based off of these maps and why. Then maybe follow that video with you guys on that lake, using what you talked about to find these places and how to cover those spots(how you would fish them)

Hey Tactical, so we've established the fact that muddy rising water isn't the worst. What about if the water is muddy from rain, but the water level largely stays the same? I live in MS and have a 3 acre pond on my property thats about 25 ft deep on the levee side, 6-8 pound large mouth in it. Top water is awesome but this time of year I get nothing. The problem is the pond is full of lay downs and I can't get up in there without losing a ton of lures. I'm torn between leaving it like it is and only fishing the warm months or cleaning it out. It also get super milky this time of year because its the lowest point in the area. Any input?

Losing because of treble hooks or because fish wrapping you in the trees?

I would start throwing baits like jigs, Texas this, and weedless baits. They won’t get hung up near as much

You Could also try a soft swimbait like an 6" osprey or trash fish rigged on a weightless EWG 6/0 swimbait hook. Fishing it like a wakebait for those topwater strikes.

@@gregthomas4605 Treble hooks and jigs get caught up. Top water is the only thing reliable. Frog fishing across the top of the lay downs in the summer is awesome but this time of year I get nothing.

@@nogoodcops6557 texas rig but instead of skin hooking it leave the hook point embedded in the plastic (so when your rigging it and the hookpoint is about to come out turn it so that it never leaves the plastic) the hookup ratio isnt as good as a texposed bait but the hook will absolutely be near impossible to snag. Also peg your weight on that I use 2 bobber stops so i know it isn't going to slide up. I have a pond that has no cover on it whatsoever except for the one large tree that fell in the water years ago. The only way i get bit in the winter is casting the texas rig (as stated earlier) into the heart of those branches. You are still going to lose baits but that's just a part of fishing.

Does these work similarly on the CA delta? All great tops but delta can be a totally different animal with tidal swings and being at the end of the rain flows. Thanks buddy!

It absolutely works. The difference is you dont need the rain persay, they'll do it on all the BIG tides.

Stained, muddy water isn't my problem, my problem is, when the fish are primarily hitting only a sanko or brushhog and then stop hitting those baits. What to do when they stop going for your favorite, go-2 baits. Too weedy for anything that's NOT weedless. HELP!....PLEASE!!

I'm asking for rising water here. Record low reservoirs last year, and low snow this year... Mind swinging some of that rain North a few hundred miles?

Hey guys, weird time of year to be asking, but I figured no better place to get a creative response. I live in the southeast and primarily fish a large private pond; this pond, however, yields some surprisingly large fish, I stuck two over 6lb last year from it. The issue is, by late spring the pond scum and hydrilla get super thick and stay that way til nearly winter. Anyone have a creative suggestion on what they might take when when they’ve had enough of the frog?

A chatterbait on a moderate rod. Let it bump on the top of the grass. Use braided line. It's abrasive traits will help it cut through the vegatation when hooked up and will help you horse the fish out of the cover more easily. The braid also has very very little stretch to help "snap" your hookset to drive that heavy gauge hook; being that you are using a more moderate rod.

Thanks guys. That gooey pond scum texture is a definite challenge compared to other grasses I’ve fished.
