Paddle-tail swimbait have been proven to be terrific catchers of big bass. Terry Bolton shares his insights on how he fishes for and catches big bass on paddle-tail swimbaits on lead swimbait jigheads.
In this video he is fishing the new Zoom 5-Inch Swimmer (goo.gl/ue2bxh) swimbait on a 1/2-ounce VMC Swimbait head (goo.gl/mFCRCC). He's using heavy-power Lew's Custom Speed Stick rods (goo.gl/o1foNF) with high-speed Lew's Tournament Pro reels (goo.gl/7UaPqr) and 17-pound Sufix fluorocarbon (goo.gl/cW8VOf). The video is full of great big fish catches and useful information for anyone wanting to learn more about fishing swimbaits.

People, listen. Every single lure made will catch fish. Just because he gets a 7-8 pounder on this lure doesn’t mean you HAVE to go out and buy the exact rod reel lure jig head line etc. you’re not gonna go throw it and swing an 8 so let me tell you, yes he’s catching fish but could have done the same thing with ANY lure. He’s paid to make you convinced this is what you need to do to catch fish. You could literally buy a Barbie pole and bluegill hooks, dig some worms and do the exact same thing. Enjoy what you like by doing what you like with what you like to use. The next guy will swear you need to drop shot or throw a jig. Take it from me, I support a family and I don’t do it by fishing. It’s advertising, it’s all it is. Don’t blow your money on garbage that you’ll use 2 times because you just couldn’t swing in the 8 pounder. Relax and just fish

My all time favorite bait is a hollow body swim bait. As far as the new Zoom swimbait goes I like it but it's just a Basstrix remake. The only difference I can see in it and the Zoom is the Zoom has a less hollow body.

You can't go wrong with a Keitech. I haven't had much luck with them in ultra clear water that has very little structure but I love them on Arigs. I also love the Keitech as a finesse swimbait.

This is how I caught my personal best fish at a lake, A 5-pound largemouth. Except I actually put a swimbait on a drop shot rig which is really unorthodox I know. The lake is deep and I was fishing from the bank

@Wired2Fish
@Wired2Fish 8 жыл бұрын
+YAK MAN Yeah, the trend has been toward using faster reels for applications where traditionally a 6.4:1 was considered ideal. Guys are just learning to control their retrieve better, but like the ability to pickup line quick if needed. Ultimately boils down to personal preference though.

+Wired2Fish I bought a Lew's speed spool reel. It is 7:1. What weight lures are appropriate. I'm more concerned about the minimum. I'm pretty good at casting it so far (first bait caster), but I don't want to underload it and cause backlash.

Yesterday I had 20 powerful bites in the water column on a 3 inch bluegill paddle-tail, the bass was suspended at 10 ft in 20 ft water depth. Casting, letting it sink a bit, then slowly retrieving for a turn of the handle, and again letting it sink. The bites came as soon as it started sinking again. The thing is I didn't manage to set the hook not even once. What the hell am I doing wrong? Why the hell is hitting it so hard, just about to take the rod out of my hands, but it doesn't take it? I'm using a 8'6'' ft fast rod, 10 lb braided with fluorocarbon leader, 1/4 oz jig-heads. They spawned 2 months ago, they are now back in the depths. Should I go for crank-baits? Its making me nuts and I couldn't get a decent sleep last night.

If you got 20 hits on the paddle tail I wouldn't give up on it just yet. As a matter of fact if I missed 20 'big hits' on anything I'd be right back in the water the next day with the same lure and retrieve technique. I'm not sure what type of hook set you were attempting when you got your strikes but take another look at this video and notice the hook set! A sweeping hook set! (not sure what happened on his first hook set though it looked like he was going to fall out of the boat)..lol Remember your paddle tail has only one hook in it and if that fish is taking it on the descend once he takes up the slack it's going to look like a big hit and you're going to be tempted with that 8-foot 6-inch fast rod to yank the anchor off the bottom. Just a suggestion: try a sweeping hook set to turn the fish if you're not already using it.

I went right back on yesterday in the afternoon. They were African catfish just throwing themselves on the lure. After the first couple of misses I downsized the swim bait and I caught the first one, hooking itself from the bite. After the second fish I packed and left, I'm not interested on them and I doubt they share the same area with the largemouth. Thanks for the info anyway, best regards

Todi Antoniu Wow sounds like they were trying to put a knockout hit on your swimbait! Good deal on getting a couple to find out what they were. Reminds me of a lost golf ball in golf. I don't care about the rest of the round of golf I just want to know where the hell that damn lost ball went!! Lol. 'Good fishing to ya'...

shoot i can help. i would say go with a shorter rod in the 7 foot range, put it on a moderate action, heavier line i use 60 lb braid. and depending if you fish lakes or ponds use 3/8 weight. moderate action rods are used for reaction baits anything over than texas rig and finesse presentation and if you use braid it has no stretch and flurocarbon can break off easier plus with braid you can fish through cover and braid is more sensitive and you can tighten your drag all the way down. 60 lb braid is equal to 18 lb fluro. all you need to do for a hookset is basically keep reeling and lean into an upward side sweep this line combined with this action rod with help you land more fish and keep you hook in the fishes mouth without breaking or shaking or jumping. keep up the good work thats a great technique to fish a paddletail

+GabooNx But in some states it cannot be used at all. Look at some of the state regulations. Personally with the lakes I fish a small swimbait has worked better for me.

Man I really didn't have much faith in these swim baits but I tell you what. I have used them hear in MI the last year and I have had some awesome days. Just from my observation the best baits tend to be the SOFTEST ones you can get. You ALso don't want them with a fat body because they don't have as much vibration in my opinion. But get you some and try em
