HOW TO CATCH CRABS FROM A JETTY/LAND BASED - The Fishing Guru

This is how we find our crabs when launching the boat seems like an impossible task at 5am. Forgot to mention that the bait used on this occasion was some defrosted Australian Salmon from a previous trip.

@@TheFishingGuru No problem. I’ve been doing the chicken on a string tied to a stick method, and in my one spot, with a few of them tied on, I can’t even keep up with them. This convinced me to pony up and get a basket. Might feel like cheating at that point though haha.

I find the dual ring nets (with steel mesh base) to be the most productive here in South Australia. If chasing mud crabs up north however, the fully enclosed bigger square traps would be more effective... Unfortunately they are not permitted for use here in South Australia though. I think that these dual ring ones are also not permitted in other states (Victoria?) where they use a Pyramid style one instead, so probably best to check local rules and regulations also 👍

If located in Australia, be careful Mate as many states (including here in SA) have rules against using non fish based animal products as bait. Using chicken carcases might potentially end up copping a substantial fine. We generally use frames and heads of fish such as Salmon that we have caught and filleted previously. Many fish mongers sell them also. Pilchards work well in a bait cage and I know many people who absolutely swear by carp 👍

Most tackle shops should have some form of Crab measure available to purchase. The ones that we make here in South Australia are available via our website www.thefishingguru.net, in store at Let's Go Fishin (Christies Beach) or any tackle shop/caravan park/general store that stocks How's YA Tackle products 😁👌

Hi there. We generally use leftover frames and heads from Australian Salmon and Tuna that we have caught. Carp works really well as well 👍 You could also use pilchards but they would need to go into a bait bag/net to keep them a bit longer. Hope it helps.

Carp works best for us as the seals and rays will leave your nets alone. Warmer months better here in Adelaide
