The best instructional ling cod video I have ever seen, very very well done! For beginners, I would add: If you lift your rod and it just feels spongy, set the hook, it is a ling cod. Sometimes they inhale it without really pulling on your line.

Learned a lot of things that day, it was really fun. I will practice using swimbait to catch halibut from the pier these weeks.

Trying to get better at using swim baits do you have any tips on how to move the swim bait once it hits bottom?
@bjzfishing2 жыл бұрын
You don’t need to move it much. The swells will move it up and down for you 50% of you bites will happen on the initial drop as it nears the bottom.

How many lings did you catch? Is there a 2 fish limit?
@bjzfishing Жыл бұрын
yea 2 ling limit, but if you catch more it's for other on the open charter

So if you don't get bit on the initial drop do you just twitch your rod a bit? Or do you just give your reel a few cranks and then drop it back down?
@bjzfishing2 жыл бұрын
Just jerk the rod up and down. If the swells are large just hold the rod still as the boat will move ur bait. Every 10-15 seconds drop the bait until u feel bottom again.

@@bjzfishing Awesome thanks. I did a lot of SoCal fishing and I just moved up here to the bay area for college. For rockfishing/bay fishing, what rigs do you think I need? I'm gonna get those swimbaits you use, some trap rigs, and some shrimp flies/dropper loops. Let me know if theres' anything else you think is worth getting

I must agree with Peter’s comments below……You provide step-by-step instructions on things to do and things to avoid. Thanks for posting this video. How many lingcod were caught swimbaits versus metal jigs that day? We’re you using the standard jig heads or the ones with the underspin blades? Captain Allen and Deckhand Jonathan we’re on target EVERY TIME with the gaff. What a great day you had!

Hey boss i see u have a shimano tekota i have a tekota 600 and ive used it 3 times and drag slips like no tomorrow on fish half the size of those lings u catch yours does not look like it slips at all did u get it modified too the carbon fiber drags?
@bjzfishing3 жыл бұрын
no, haven't done any upgrades, I service it yearly. Maybe some grease got onto the drag stack? Shimanos tend to be packed with grease out of the factory
@uncletony36743 жыл бұрын
I agree maybe have to much grease on the drag washers.
@horaciogarcia72153 жыл бұрын
Can they be cleaned out or should i just replace?
@uncletony36743 жыл бұрын
@@horaciogarcia7215 there’s a break down sheet in the box on how the reel comes apart, there’s a few carbon drag washers that are stacked with the main gear. Just take a napkin a wipe some grease off, don’t worry if you wipe to much off. The drag washers are made to wear over time.
@uncletony36743 жыл бұрын
@@horaciogarcia7215 good to learn how to take apart your reel, I clean my reels after a few trips so they stay if perfect running condition. And if your wondering about the grease you can use Cal’s grease, it sold on eBay for a few bucks.
