Inshore Lingcod Trolling Tactics | Fishing with Rod

Rod joins Dave Murphy at Murphy Sportfishing for some lingcod fishing in Kyuquot on Vancouver Island BC. Dave selectively targets lingcod by slowly trolling large swimbaits, which smaller species like rockfish cannot bite onto.

Hey everyone, thanks for checking out this video. I know it took awhile longer to get it up than I originally said, so thanks for your patience. :) This was a great opportunity for us to learn how to target lingcod selectively from the best! Dave is by far one of the most knowledgable anglers on Vancouver Island and we were indeed able to get into many fish in a short period of time. Dave and his sister run a lodge in Kyuquot Sound between late June and early September. We've been up twice now and the experiences have been incredible. The fishing for salmon, lingcod, halibut and rockfish is the best you'll find around this part of the province. My wife and I are very avid fishers that do more fishing than the average fisher does (owning a business we have the time) to hit the majority of the lower mainland and the surrounding areas bodies of water at any time of year, which we do! We are equipped with all the toys required for the outdoors to get to the lakes/rivers & ocean, my wife & myself would love to tag along with you on an adventure, we have a quad for you and your significant other "Kitty" to get to those harder areas not accessible by truck! I wouldn't be surprised if we have been on the same water at some time.. Actually not a bad show. I like how the Asian guy wasn't afraid to ask questions. Program had a nice organic flow to it and not pretentious like so many of the fishing programs

July is usually pretty good here Northern California for salmon Ling Cod depending on the season Dungeness crab if it's still open varies from year to year

Love this kind of fishing. I've got a few tricks of my own. Have you caught any huge yellow eye rock cod? Some people wrongfully call them red snapper because they're so red. :)

Osckarre yeah, they’re more commonly called red snapper by anglers because of that body colouration. In BC, retention of yelloweye rockfish is now closed permanently. Where we fished in this video, encounters of yelloweyes are slim to none, as they are more commonly found in deeper water with the bigger lingcod.

What is the ideal distance you want to keep the lure from the rocks to avoid hanging up? I usually try and keep it 3 feet off the rocks but sometimes I snag myself :P

For lingcod it can be pretty far off the bottom actually. You can see a lot of time in the video we reel the line in quite a bit, which brings the swimbait off the bottom quite a bit. These lingcod are benthopelagic, meaning that they'll swim away from the structures quite a bit even though their primary habitat are the rocks/kelp beds etc.

Would a net not be an easier way to make sure ya get it to the boat? My buddy taught me years ago, on his boat to net it before the head emerges... I've been trying the last few days to get a ling from my kayak... lost two so far... need to shorten my leader and lengthen my net handle!!

I guess you can net them too, it could just turn into a mess once you get it in the net with all the spines etc so that's why we prefer the gaff.

Nice to see a guide that lets you hold the rod and use the gaff. We caught our limit on our recent trip but our guide made us keep the rod in the holder the entire time for ling and halibut - it took a lot of fun out of the experience. He would strike and then let us take over the reel...

I think it depends on who you go out with. Because we've done this pretty often and know what to do, plus the guides know us, we usually just do everything on our own. Most guides will let you handle the rods if you ask. I think some guides do the hook-ups etc for the guests because they want to make sure the guests are going home with all the fish expected if they are inexperienced. Definitely do the research and ask the guides before booking though.

My buddy lost a ling last year because he pumped the tip too fast. Boats want their customers to go home with fish, not with what could’ve and should’ve memories. Using a rod holder also saves inexperienced fisherman their backs. I used rod holder after shoulder surgery and it saved my butt. Only had to worry about reeling. Using a gaff takes practice. Loved the technique used in this video. Only good for low boats though. Charter I go on, you’re about 4 feet above the water.

There is a big landing net on board, but that's only used for salmon. Because lingcod is so spiny and toothy, they would quickly damage the mesh if being netted.

I thought that you could only keep ling over 65cm. That first one killed with the gaff is well under 65cm.

Your only options are at certain spots on Vancouver Island. The areas around Vancouver are all closed to lingcod and rockfish fishing unfortunately.

why must you keep the head of the fish under the water?

Sorry, that part was missed in the video. For most fish species as soon as the head comes out, they start thrashing around. This is especially true for lingcod and that hook can pop out very easily as soon as they start doing that (because of the size of their mouth, and you could see how easily the hook flew out everytime the fish lands in the boat).

They're beautiful predators IMO, so many body features that make them such aggressive hunters. Best eating fish in the Pacific Northwest. :)

With fish so close to the minimum size you might want to net them instead of using the gaff.

Minimum size is not 6 pounds, and guessing at the weight is not a satisfactory measure. What's the daily limit there? Most places here it is 2/day.

how did he knew if it was a legal fish to keep before he use the gaff it was kill first and then you measure just wondering

Good question. Guides like Dave have seen thousands of lingcod to the boat so they can easily determine whether the fish is legal or not by looking at it. We did have undersized ones that were unhooked in the water by sliding the gaff down to the hook and flipping the fish, just didn't show those in the video. With that said, everyone should make sure a fish is legal before dispatching, whether it is by bringing into the boat and measuring or doing it in the water.

fjbaaj, during a regular 4.5 mth guide season we will kill 400+ ling, never mind the ones that get releases. You get used to telling what a keeper is. Truth is, when you start fishing structure just off and well off shore, the average size ling is over the size limit, (they become food if too small) Great vid rod, too bad you never came up back in the day of the "Crazy Hole" that was ling fishing most have never seen

How is it this guy doesn't know that she should bleed the fish before I throw them in the ice. That gives your nice white meat and bleeds out most of the parasites especially in bigger Ling Cod or halibut and sea trout especially
